Book Llangorse Crannog

Download or read book Llangorse Crannog written by Alan Lane and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crannog on Llangorse Lake near Brecon in mid Wales was discovered in 1867 and first excavated in 1869 by two local antiquaries, Edgar and Henry Dumbleton, who published their findings over the next four years. In 1988 dendrochronological dates from submerged palisade planks established its construction in the ninth century, and a combined off- and on-shore investigation of the site was started as a joint project between Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales. The subsequent surveys and excavation (1989-1994, 2004) resulted in the recovery of a remarkable time capsule of life in the late ninth and tenth century, on the only crannog yet identified in Wales. This publication re-examines the early investigations, describes in detail the anatomy of the crannog mound and its construction, and the material culture found. The crannog’s treasures include early medieval secular and religious metalwork, evidence for manufacture, the largest depository of early medieval carpentry in Wales and a remarkable richly embroidered silk and linen textile which is fully analysed and placed in context. The crannog’s place in Welsh history is explored, as a royal llys (‘court’) within the kingdom of Brycheiniog. Historical record indicates the site was destroyed in 916 by Aethelflaed, the Mercian queen, in the course of the Viking wars of the early tenth century. The subsequent significance of the crannog in local traditions and its post-medieval occupation during a riotous dispute in the reign Elizabeth I are also discussed. Two logboats from the vicinity of the crannog are analysed, and a replica described. The cultural affinities of the crannog and its material culture is assessed, as are their relationship to origin myths for the kingdom, and to probable links with early medieval Ireland. The folk tales associated with the lake are explored, in a book that brings together archaeology, history, myths and legends, underwater and terrestrial archaeology.

Book Bioeconomics

Download or read book Bioeconomics written by Fouad Sabry and published by One Billion Knowledgeable. This book was released on 2023-12-20 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Bioeconomics Bioeconomics is intimately connected to the early development of theories in fisheries economics, which were initially developed in the middle of the 1950s by Canadian economists Scott Gordon and Anthony Scott (1955). Their ideas made use of recent developments in biological fisheries modeling, primarily the works that Schaefer had done in 1954 and 1957 on establishing a formal relationship between fishing activities and biological growth through mathematical modeling that was confirmed by empirical studies. Additionally, their ideas relate to ecology, the environment, and the protection of resources. How you will benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Bioeconomics (fisheries) Chapter 2: Maximum sustainable yield Chapter 3: Overfishing Chapter 4: Fisheries management Chapter 5: Population ecology Chapter 6: Fisheries science Chapter 7: Individual fishing quota Chapter 8: Milner Baily Schaefer Chapter 9: Sustainable yield in fisheries Chapter 10: Population dynamics of fisheries Chapter 11: Fish mortality Chapter 12: Ussif Rashid Sumaila Chapter 13: Ray Hilborn Chapter 14: Catch share Chapter 15: Bioeconomics Chapter 16: Gordon-Schaefer model Chapter 17: Fedor Baranov Chapter 18: Economics Chapter 19: Colin W. Book Legal aspects of abandoned lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear

Download or read book Legal aspects of abandoned lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear written by Hodgson, S. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-01-05 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing quantity of plastic waste in the marine environment including abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) is a global problem. A particular feature of ALDFG is the potential of some gears to carry on fishing for many months or even years. The study examines legal responses to ALDFG in the context of marine fisheries. After discussing the nature of the problem of ALDFG and some of the reasons why fishing gear is abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded, the study examines the response of the international community to ALDFG. A key finding is that ALDFG is at the same time, a fishing issue, a navigation problem (of vessel source pollution) and an environmental problem with the resulting involvement of FAO, IMO and UNEP as well as the UN General Assembly. After examining potential legal approaches to the problem, the study then describes the basic legal and institutional arrangements in four case study jurisdictions that have adopted legal measures to address ALDFG, namely Australia, the European Union and its Member States, Norway and the USA finding once again the tripartite responsibility of fisheries, navigation and environment ministries/agencies. The inter-sectoral nature of ALDFG suggests the need for a collaborative and coordinated approach. While not all of the case study jurisdictions make use of all ten of the individual legal measures identified, the case studies also clearly show that ALDFG is a problem that is susceptible to a legal response at the national or regional level including through the use of extended producer responsibility schemes, various reporting requirements and gear standards. Legal tools to address the problem of ALDFG clearly exist. The extent to which some, or all, of them are necessary or appropriate in a given context at national, regional or global level is not ultimately a legal question but a political one.

Book Longlining

Download or read book Longlining written by Åsmund Bjordal and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1996-09-20 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlining is becoming increasingly more important as a method of fishing commercially for certain prime species of fish- particulary in the face of declining stocks. Longlining is much more selective that any other form of fishing and is thus more environmentally acceptable. Furthermore, longlining allows for the targeting of particular prime species and fish caught by this method are less damaged and thus hold a higher value. Despite the many major benefits of longlining, there are, as yet few books which address the technical and economic aspects of this method of commercial fishing. Written by an expert, this new book describes the principles and development of longlining fishing and explains the action of chemical sensing in fish and their behaviour towards baited hooks. Details of gear construction, the operation cycle for longlines, longline vessels and the different principles of mechanised baiting and on-board gear handling are provided and typical examples are given. The target species, gear parameters and catching efficiency, and the selective properties of longline gear are fully discussed whilst a concluding chapter compares longlining with other fishing methods.
