Book Selected Works of Eberhard Hopf with Commentaries

Download or read book Selected Works of Eberhard Hopf with Commentaries written by Eberhard Hopf and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work celebrates the work of Eberhard Hopf, a founding father of ergodic theory, a mathematician who produced many beautiful, elegantly written, and now classical results in integral equations and partial differential equations. Hopf's results remain at the core of these fields, and the title includes Hopf's original mathematical papers, still notable for their elegance and clarity of the writing, with accompanying summaries and commentary by well-known mathematicians. Today, ergodic theory and P.D.E. continue to be active, important areas of mathematics. In this volume the reader will find the roots of many ergodic theory concepts and theorems. Hopf authored fundamental results for P.D.E., such as the maximum principle of elliptic equations and the complete solution of Burger's equation. The familiar properties of elliptic equations were proved for the first time in his earliest work and are included here. His bifurcation theorem, still used over and over again, is a particular gem. The proof of the Wiener-Hopf Theorem is a stunning application of deep analysis. The volume is presented in two main parts. The first section is dedicated to classical papers in analysis and fluid dynamics, and the second to ergodic theory. These works and all the others in the Selected Works carry commentaries by a stellar group of mathematicians who write of the origin of the problems, the important results that followed. Many a mathematical researcher and graduate student will find these collected works to be an excellent resource.

Book The Selected Works of Phillip A Griffiths with Commentary

Download or read book The Selected Works of Phillip A Griffiths with Commentary written by Phillip Griffiths and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last four decades, Phillip Griffiths has been a central figure in mathematics. During this time, he made crucial contributions in several fields, including complex analysis, algebraic geometry, and differential systems. His books and papers are distinguished by a remarkably lucid style that invites the reader to understand not only the subject at hand, but also the connections among seemingly unrelated areas of mathematics. Even today, many of Griffiths' papers are used as a standard source on a subject. Another important feature of Griffiths' writings is that they often bring together classical and modern mathematics. The four parts of Selected Works--Analytic Geometry, Algebraic Geometry, Variations of Hodge Structures, and Differential Systems--are organized according to the subject matter and are supplemented by Griffiths' brief, but extremely illuminating, personal reflections on the mathematical content and the times in which they were produced. Griffiths' Selected Works provide the reader with a panoramic view of important and exciting mathematics during the second half of the 20th century.

Book Doing Mathematics Convention Subject Calculation Analogy 2nd Edition

Download or read book Doing Mathematics Convention Subject Calculation Analogy 2nd Edition written by Martin H Krieger and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing Mathematics discusses some ways mathematicians and mathematical physicists do their work and the subject matters they uncover and fashion. The conventions they adopt, the subject areas they delimit, what they can prove and calculate about the physical world, and the analogies they discover and employ, all depend on the mathematics — what will work out and what won't. The cases studied include the central limit theorem of statistics, the sound of the shape of a drum, the connections between algebra and topology, and the series of rigorous proofs of the stability of matter. The many and varied solutions to the two-dimensional Ising model of ferromagnetism make sense as a whole when they are seen in an analogy developed by Richard Dedekind in the 1880s to algebraicize Riemann's function theory; by Robert Langlands' program in number theory and representation theory; and, by the analogy between one-dimensional quantum mechanics and two-dimensional classical statistical mechanics. In effect, we begin to see 'an identity in a manifold presentation of profiles,' as the phenomenologists would say. This second edition deepens the particular examples; it describe the practical role of mathematical rigor; it suggests what might be a mathematician's philosophy of mathematics; and, it shows how an 'ugly' first proof or derivation embodies essential features, only to be appreciated after many subsequent proofs. Natural scientists and mathematicians trade physical models and abstract objects, remaking them to suit their needs, discovering new roles for them as in the recent case of the Painlevé transcendents, the Tracy-Widom distribution, and Toeplitz determinants. And mathematics has provided the models and analogies, the ordinary language, for describing the everyday world, the structure of cities, or God's infinitude.

Book Referent control of action and perception

Download or read book Referent control of action and perception written by Anatol G. Feldman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical data on neural control of motor action and perception have not yet been put into the context of a coherent theory. Dr. Feldman's goal for the proposed book is to illustrate that the field is now at a stage where the data can be used to formulate some core principles that underlie action and perception and to present the foundation of a scientific theory of motor control. Dr. Feldman is a well-known expert and has been active in the field for a long time. In the proposed book he will outline an approach to the analysis of action and perception that he and his colleagues have been using for the past 50 years or so. His theoretical approach will not only help to explain past empirical research, but should also help to inform and provide a structure for future empirical studies.
