Download or read book Telephony the Internet and the Media written by Jeffrey K. MacKie-Mason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Telecommunications Policy Research Conference (TPRC), this volume begins with a historical survey of a quarter-century of TPRC meetings as one measure of change in and research about the telecommunications industry. Additional papers reflecting the ongoing pace of change in technological, economic, and policy issues are organized around four topics: * economic analysis of local and international telephone policy; * media industry studies including video competition, guidelines for children's educational television, and the setting of AM stereo standards; * applications and policy regarding the Internet; and * comparative studies in telephone and satellite policy. Collectively, the contents of this volume assess key issues for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners. Research reported in this volume illustrates the continually expanding scope of scholarly concerns about the telecommunications and information industry and contributes to further policy research and analysis.

Book Policy Research in Telecommunications

Download or read book Policy Research in Telecommunications written by Vincent Mosco and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1984 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telecommunications policy research has grown vigorously over the past few years as evidenced by the contributors in this volume. In addition to the sheer amount of research, policy studies have grown in diversity reflecting an industry that now affects almost every area of social life. Thus, these chapters confront issues such as economic development, competition, unemployment, educational reform, the role of government, international conflict and cooperation, and many others. The volume is organized according to four issue areas: the economics of telecommunications policy, the impact of policy research on policy decisions, the social impact of accelerating growth in telecommunications, and the international consequences of telecommunications policy.

Book Competition Regulation and Convergence

Download or read book Competition Regulation and Convergence written by Sharon E. Gillett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The telecommunications industry has experienced dynamic changes over the past several years, and those exciting events and developments are reflected in the chapters of this volume. The Telecommunications Policy Research Conference (TPRC) holds an unrivaled place at the center of national public policy discourse on issues in communications and information. TPRC is one of the few places where multidisciplinary discussions take place as the norm. The papers collected here represent the current state of research in telecommunication policy, and are organized around four topics: competition, regulation, universal service, and convergence. The contentious competition issues include bundling as a strategy in software competition, combination bidding in spectrum auctions, and anticompetitive behavior in the Internet. Regulation takes up telephone number portability, decentralized regulatory decision making versus central regulatory authority, data protection, restrictions to the flow of information over the Internet, and failed Global Information Infrastructure initiatives. Universal service addresses the persistent gap in telecommunications from a socioeconomic perspective, the availability of competitive Internet access service and cost modeling. The convergence section concentrates on the costs of Internet telephony versus circuit switched telephony, the intertwined evolution of new services, new technologies, and new consumer equipment, and the politically charged question of asymmetric regulation of Internet telephony and conventional telephone service.
