Download or read book Selected Works of E L Lehmann written by Javier Rojo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-14 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes present a selection of Erich L. Lehmann’s monumental contributions to Statistics. These works are multifaceted. His early work included fundamental contributions to hypothesis testing, theory of point estimation, and more generally to decision theory. His work in Nonparametric Statistics was groundbreaking. His fundamental contributions in this area include results that came to assuage the anxiety of statisticians that were skeptical of nonparametric methodologies, and his work on concepts of dependence has created a large literature. The two volumes are divided into chapters of related works. Invited contributors have critiqued the papers in each chapter, and the reprinted group of papers follows each commentary. A complete bibliography that contains links to recorded talks by Erich Lehmann – and which are freely accessible to the public – and a list of Ph.D. students are also included. These volumes belong in every statistician’s personal collection and are a required holding for any institutional library.
Download or read book Frontier Orbitals And Reaction Paths Selected Papers Of Kenichi Fukui written by Hiroshi Fujimoto and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-11-26 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of selected papers on the Frontier Orbital Theory by Nobel prizewinner Kenichi Fukui (Chemistry 1981), with introductory notes. It provides the basic concept and formulation of the theory, and the physical and chemical significance of the frontier orbital interactions in chemistry, together with many practical applications. The formulation of the Intrinsic Reaction Coordinate and applications to some simple systems are also presented. The aim of this volume is to show by what forces chemical reactions are driven and to demonstrate how the regio- and stereo-selectivities are determined in chemical reactions. Students and senior investigators will gain insight into the nature of chemical reactions and find out how quantum chemical calculations are connected with chemical intuition.

Download or read book Selected Works of C C Heyde written by Ross Maller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-17 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1945, very early in the history of the development of a rigorous analytical theory of probability, Feller (1945) wrote a paper called “The fundamental limit theorems in probability” in which he set out what he considered to be “the two most important limit theorems in the modern theory of probability: the central limit theorem and the recently discovered ... ‘Kolmogoroff’s cel ebrated law of the iterated logarithm’ ”. A little later in the article he added to these, via a charming description, the “little brother (of the central limit theo rem), the weak law of large numbers”, and also the strong law of large num bers, which he considers as a close relative of the law of the iterated logarithm. Feller might well have added to these also the beautiful and highly applicable results of renewal theory, which at the time he himself together with eminent colleagues were vigorously producing. Feller’s introductory remarks include the visionary: “The history of probability shows that our problems must be treated in their greatest generality: only in this way can we hope to discover the most natural tools and to open channels for new progress. This remark leads naturally to that characteristic of our theory which makes it attractive beyond its importance for various applications: a combination of an amazing generality with algebraic precision.
Download or read book Selected Papers of Frederick Sanger written by Frederick Sanger and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume is mainly concerned with the development of methods for ?sequencing? ? that is, determination of the order of the amino acids in proteins and of nucleotides in RNA and DNA. In 1943 the position of only one amino acid in a protein (insulin) was known, and Sanger's first paper resulted in finding a second amino acid. In his final paper in 1982 he describes the determination of a DNA sequence of 48,502 nucleotides. The papers describe the steady improvements in techniques, and exciting biological results revealed by the sequences.

Download or read book Selected Papers on Language and the Brain written by N. Geschwind and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers of science work not only with the methods of the sciences but with their contents as well. Substantive issues concerning the relation between mind and matter, between the material basis and the functions of cognition, have been central within the entire history of philosophy. We recall such philosophers as Aristotle, Descartes, the early Kant, Ernst Mach, and the early William James as directly inquiring of the organs and structures of thinking. Science and its philosophical self-criticism are especially and deeply united in the effort to understand the biological brain and human behavior, and so it requires no apology to include this collection of clinical studies among Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science. The work of Dr. Norman Geschwind, well represented in this selection, explores the relation between structure and function, between the anatomy of the brain and the 'higher' behavior of men and women. As a clinical neurologist, Geschwind was led to these studies particularly by his in terest in those pathologies which have to do with human perception and language. His research into the anatomical substrates of specific dis orders-and strikingly the aphasias -present a fascinating and provocative examination of fundamental questions which will concern not neurologists alone but also psychologists, physicians, linguists, speech pathologists, educators, anthropologists, historians of medicine, and philosophers, among others, namely all those interested in the characteristic modes of human activity, in speech, in perception, and in the learning process generally.

Download or read book Short term Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy for Adolescents with Depression written by Simon Cregeen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short-term Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (STPP) is a manualised, time-limited model of psychoanalytic psychotherapy comprising twenty-eight weekly sessions for the adolescent patient and seven sessions for parents or carers, designed so that it can be delivered within a public mental health system, such as Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in the UK. It has its origins in psychoanalytic theoretical principles, clinical experience, and empirical research suggesting that psychoanalytic treatment of this duration can be effective for a range of disorders, including depression, in children and young people. The manual explicitly focuses on the treatment of moderate to severe depression, both by detailing the psychoanalytic understanding of depression in young people and through careful consideration of clinical work with this group. It is the first treatment manual to describe psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adolescents with depression.
