Book Teaching and Learning in Saudi Arabia

Download or read book Teaching and Learning in Saudi Arabia written by Amani K Hamdan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saudi Arabia is witnessing unprecedented progress in the field of higher education. Even though the country opened its first university in 1957, so far there seems to be little English scholarly writing about Saudi education in general and higher education in particular. The current expansion of Saudi Arabia’s higher-education system has put a spotlight on this serious gap in the international literature. This book helps to fill this lacuna through the work of 16 scholars who have contributed to the development of the Saudi education system. In so doing, the book reveals areas where more research is required and thus provides a useful starting point for education scholars. This anthology is unique in that it is the first to offer a comprehensive perspective on the current knowledge base pertaining to Saudi higher education as well as to the ongoing efforts to introduce reforms.

Book Using Social Media in Flipped Classrooms in Saudi Universities

Download or read book Using Social Media in Flipped Classrooms in Saudi Universities written by Majed Abdallah Alharthi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional education is no longer viable at the present time. In light of technological development and the adoption of a number of diverse technologies in the field of education, the student has become a vital element in learning through student-centered learning environments. Saudi universities are striving diligently to keep up with the technological development and the employment of modern trends in the educational process through the gradual merging of interactive learning methods or strategies, such as the flipped classroom, active learning, cooperative learning, etc. The flipped classroom plays an important role in enhancing the positive role of the learner during the educational process by providing the students with content before the lecture by the use of technology and exploiting class time in debates, problem-solving, creating, synthesizing, and applying. There are many various technology tools and online platforms that can be used in implementing the flipped classroom, such as Blackboard LMS, Google Docs, Wikis, blogs, Facebook, etc. Also, there are a number of advanced countries that have implemented flipped classrooms by the use of various technology tools and social platforms. For example, in Saudi Arabia, Al-Harbi & Alshumaimeri (2016) applied the flipped classroom approach by uploading videos on the Edmodo site. Therefore, this study focused on faculty members' experiences in using social media as a flipped classroom tool in Saudi Universities. The study addressed four main questions that focused on: faculty members' experiences in using social media in teaching in Saudi universities, faculty members' attitudes towards using social media in flipped classrooms, exploring how faculty members in Saudi universities use social media as a flipped classroom tool to address students' learning preferences per the R2D2 framework, and factors that prevent or limit Saudi faculty's social media uses in flipped classrooms.

Book Investigating University Instructors Experiences and Uses of Mobile Technology in Teaching and Learning in Saudi Arabia

Download or read book Investigating University Instructors Experiences and Uses of Mobile Technology in Teaching and Learning in Saudi Arabia written by Ibrahim K. Alali and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of mobile technology in teaching and learning has become a worldwide phenomenon. Many university instructors in Saudi Arabia have also started using their own mobile technology in their teaching and for communication with students. But there is limited research on Saudi Arabian university faculty's experiences of using mobile technology in their teaching practices. This mixed-method study adapted the R2D2 (Reading, Reflecting, Displaying, and Doing) model (Bonk & Zhang, 2006, 2008) to investigate faculty's uses of mobile technology in Saudi Arabian universities, including both instructors' own teaching and learners' activities. An online survey, with both Likert-scale items and open-ended questions, was conducted to collect data on university instructors' (a) general experiences in integrating mobile technology in their teaching practices as well as for learner activities, (b) their attitudes toward mobile learning, (c) the specific learning activities in different categories as per the R2D2 model, in and out of class and for communication with students. A total of 372 instructors participated the survey, 241 of them completed the entire survey. Participants represented the 25 public universities in Saudi Arabia, with a highly diverse profile in terms of age, gender, academic major, geographic location, and years of teaching experiences. In-depth interviews were conducted with six selected participants, representing different age groups, academic majors and teaching experiences to further investigate instructors' experiences and contributing factors to their uses of mobile technology for teaching and learning in Saudi Arabian universities. The results of this mixed-method research study (Qualitative and quantitative data were collected and used) concluded that the majority of instructors showed their eagerness and willingness to use mobile technology in their teaching practices.

Quantitative methodology and a survey yielded data analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. This study was conducted in the Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia with 304 EC teachers in 190 public and 114 private EC schools.Overall results indicate that Saudi EC teachers generally held positive attitudes about using technology in EC classrooms; moreover, findings show no statistically significant differences in teachers` attitudes about using technology in the classroom based on differences in teachers` age and technology experiences in the classroom. In addition, results indicate that teachers` confidence and use of technology outside the classroom have the potential to influence and change their attitudes about using technology. Results also indicate a need for greater availability and access to technology and the Internet in EC classrooms. Preservice training and on-going professional development are also necessary to increase teachers` comfort and confidence in using technology in EC classrooms.

Book Factors Affecting Faculty s Intent to Use E learning Systems at a University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Download or read book Factors Affecting Faculty s Intent to Use E learning Systems at a University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia written by Razan I. Alsuwailem and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E-learning systems provide instructors with a platform to create, deliver, and manage course content electronically. Faculty members' use of an e-learning system at Saudi universities concerns researchers, academics, and practitioners. Although most Saudi universities have an e-learning system, few faculty members are using an e-learning system. The Saudi Arabia Ministry of Education has seen massive investment toward the educational improvement in e-learning systems through building and maintaining an advanced level of Information Technology infrastructure, improving the utilization and flexibility of Information Technology resources, and enhancing and developing the privacy and security of e-learning systems. While previous research has examined factors affecting the acceptance of e-learning, few studies have examined the security of e-learning systems. Previous studies indicate the security of e-learning systems is important for motivating faculty to use e-learning systems due to issues of trust. Previous research has also examined the positive impact on users' attitudes toward using e-learning systems by two factors: perceived ease of use (PEOU) and perceived usefulness (PU). The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between faculty members' intent to use (ITU) the e-learning system at their university and their demographic characteristics, perceptions toward the existing e-learning system security, PEOU, and PU of the e-learning system in one of largest universities at the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), King Faisal University (KFU), using an online survey available in Arabic and English. A sample of 219 faculty members from KFU completed the online survey. Results found faculty members' ITU the e-learning system at KFU was influenced by their previous teaching experience with an e-learning system, the ability to change the user password in the e-learning system, and the PU of the e-learning system. The study findings encourage researchers to study other factors that may influence faculty members' ITU the e-learning system. Furthermore, the findings will help Information Technology practitioners, especially e-learning systems' developers, to design and develop systems that will be more likely accepted and useful by the University faculty members.
