Book Rural Law Enforcement

Download or read book Rural Law Enforcement written by Allen P. Bristow and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes law enforcement techniques for rural areas, examining characteristics that influence policing styles and methods. The most influential characteristics are the vast areas officers may be policing with little or no backup, rural residents' tendency to call on police officers for many types of assistance, and the high number of property crimes involving large dollar losses. Rural police have special sources of stress: they work in isolated situations and are often 'on call' 24 hours a day. These factors dominate any discussion of rural enforcement needs, crime problems, and routine patrol techniques. For instance, roadblocks are a much more common method for apprehending offenders in rural areas than in urban areas. Rural officers are also more likely to encounter fire and railroad emergencies, animal control problems, livestock theft, wildlife enforcement tasks, drunkenness in public parks, illegal distilleries, and illegal marihuana farming. An indepth presentation of these types of policing responsibilities describes special policing techniques with background information. The text also covers police responsibilities in functions unrelated to crime and law enforcement, such as search and rescue operations in mountainous, desert, and swampy areas. Policing rural waterways and dealing with aviation violations are also covered. The book considers health and medical hazards caused by weather conditions, water safety, stings and bites, poisonous plants, altitude sickness, and lightning and electrical shock.

Book excerpt: This book is a "how to" manual for rural law enforcement personnel. Chapters begin with a brief review of scholarly literature related to the chapter topic. The book provides readers with proper procedures/tactics to be used in performance of their duties, including how rural law enforcement officers should deal with: 1) the community, residents, businesses, and political leaders; 2) specific crimes and criminal offenders, and 3) issues that confront them both personally and professionally. Additionally, the book uses quotes from actual interviews with rural law enforcement officers and supervisors, as well as with the public. Interviews were conducted in five regions of the country -- Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Northwest and Southwest -- in order to include a regional perspective and look at the similarities and differences among these rural areas of the country.

Book Anthropometric and Physical Characteristics of Rural Law Enforcement of the North Coast of California

Download or read book Anthropometric and Physical Characteristics of Rural Law Enforcement of the North Coast of California written by Anna M. Welch and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geographical location of a rural police force produces unique challenges. Due to lack of backup, an officer or deputy may need to actively maintain control of a resisting suspect for as long as 30 minutes before backup arrives. Additionally, unlike urban and suburban regions of California, rural districts do not have a full-time special weapons and tactics team (SWAT) for immediate assistance. Therefore, patrol officers may need to maintain a perimeter for up to one and half hours until SWAT arrives. These expanded job-duties may increase their need to improve their physical fitness in order to efficiently perform their job duties. This was the first project of its kind to investigate all the health- and skill-related fitness components, including anaerobic capacity, and somatotyping on rural law enforcement officers. This project identified the physical characteristics of twelve male rural LEOs on the northern coast of California. Participants performed a battery of laboratory and field fitness tests, a Wingate Bike test, and thorough anthropometric assessments. Results were compared to general population age- and gender-based normative data, as well as to police normative data (Hoffman & Collingwood, 2015). Fitness testing revealed rural LEOs ranked at 45th percentile for cardiorespiratory fitness, 44th percentile for body composition, 65th percentile for strength, 53rd percentile for relative strength, 65th percentile for flexibility, and a higher ranking for power in the 76th percentile (Hoffman & Collingwood, 2015). Somatotyping results show dominant endomorphy characteristics, followed by relatively strong mesomorphy characteristics, categorizing rural LEOs as having a meso-endomorphic somatotype.

Book Leadership Attitudes and the Implementation of Community Policing in Law Enforcement Agencies in Rural North Carolina

Download or read book Leadership Attitudes and the Implementation of Community Policing in Law Enforcement Agencies in Rural North Carolina written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the research was to compare characteristics and leadership attitudes of chief administrators of law enforcement agencies that have implemented community policing in rural North Carolina, and those who have not. A survey questionnaire was used to measure leadership attitudes and professional characteristics of chief law enforcement administrators in North Carolina. The study used data from a survey of chief administrators of rural law enforcement agencies in North Carolina to examine the correlates of community policing and to determine if there are differences between agencies using community policing and not using it. It was expected that there would be common leadership attitudes among chief administrators of rural law enforcement agencies that have implemented community policing and that there would be common characteristics of their departments. It was further expected that there would be common leadership attitudes among chief administrators of rural law enforcement agencies that have not implemented community policing and that those departments would have common characteristics. It was also expected that departments with and without community policing grants would differ in the leadership attitudes of their chief administrators and the characteristics of the departments. The study concluded that there were strong and striking differences between rural law enforcement agencies that have implemented community policing and those that had not. It also indicated that there were differences among the chief administrators who had implemented community policing. These chief law enforcement administrators scored higher on the Employee-orientation, Differentiation, and LEAD scores than those of departments without a COP grant. Further findings revealed differences in chief administrators having a baccalaureate degree, and having attended a management training course. Those administrators were more likely to have a COP grant. The test of time will reveal i.

Book Rural Policing and Policing the Rural

Download or read book Rural Policing and Policing the Rural written by Rob I. Mawby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policing reveals much about rural society. It refers to the way that the police, the public and other agencies regulate themselves and each other according to the dominant ideals of society. This can be formally, through the ever-growing spectrum of policing partnerships in neo-liberal countries, or informally, through the performance and enforcement of moral codes and values. This book draws on international inter-disciplinary perspectives to examine the range and consequences of policing across different rural localities. Rural Policing and Policing the Rural is organised into two sections: the first examines who is policing rural areas, while the second examines the nature of rural policing by considering, on the one hand, the policing of rural space and, on the other, how ideas of rurality are regulated. In doing so this book provides a survey of rural policing that will be valuable to academics, students, policy makers and those policing rural places.
