Download or read book Select Orations of Cicero Classic Reprint written by Cicero Cicero and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Orations of Cicero The treatment of the orations rhetorically and logically has been very much extended, with the hope of making the book more useful, not only for the study of Latin, but also for the study of rhetorical composition generally. The very numerous illustrations have not been inserted merely to make a picture book, but to give the pupil some sense of the reality of the orations as a part of history. Teachers and others who take a more intelligent interest in these ancient memorials, will find much explanatory and critical comment in the numbered list of illustrations. A very large increase of introductory matter has seemed desirable in view of the growing interest in the study of the history of civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Orations of Cicero: The Four Orations Against Catiline, With an Interlinear Translation on the Hamiltonian System; The Seven Remaining Orations, With an Interlinear Translation on the System of Locke As a mere Verbal translation would be inadequate to convey the meaning of Cicero in his orations, it has become necessary to add thereto. When such additions only express the thought of the author more intelligibly in English, they are denoted by being placed between parentheses and constitute a part of the sentence; but When such additions are, as it were, explanations and do not properly constitute a part of the sentence they are placed between brackets and may be con sidered as short explanatory notes. How long is that madness of yours still to mock us? When is there to be an end of that un bridled audacity of yours, swaggering about as it does now? Do not the nightly guards placed on the Palatine Hill - do not the watches posted throughout the city does not the alarm of the pe0p1e, and the union of all good men - does not the precaution taken of assembling the senate in this most defensible place - do not the looks and countenances of this venerable body here present, have any effect upon you? Do you not feel that your plans are detected? Do you not see that your conspiracy is already arrested and rendered powerless by the knowl edge which every one here possesses of it? What is there that you did last night, what the night before - where is it that you were - who was there that you summoned to meet you - what design was there which was adopted by you, with which you think that any one of us is unacquainted? Shame on the age and on its principles! The senate is aware of these things; the consul sees them; and yet this man lives. Lives! Aye, he comes even into the sen ate. He takes a part in the public deliberations; he is watching and marking down and checking off for slaugh ter every individual among us. And we. Gallant men that we are, think that we are doing our duty to the te public if we keep out of the way of his frenzied attacks. You ought, O Catiline, long ago to have been led to execution by command of the consul. That destruction which you have been long plotting against us ought to have already fallen on your own head. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Orations of Marcus Tellius Cicero: With English Notes Without interruption, down to his death, displaying his skill and talent in the most varied circumstances, and standing forth as the greatest orator among his contemporaries. His orations of which fifty-six have come down to usage the mirror of his political career, and of the most important events of his life, and are at the same time the most. brilliant monuments of Latin prose. The fulness and harmony of his thoughts, the masterly manner and clearness with which he handles his subjects, the transparency and variety of forms, the 0 Vc 1 flowi1)g and brilliant rhetorical diction, and the simple, unaffected narrativeall these qualities excite our admiration, and are found combined in each of his orations; although, according to the opinions of ancient and modern critics, one or other may not have received his last and finishing hand. The extant orations form only the smaller part of his literary productions; we have, besides, a number of rhetorical and philosophical Writingsof which it is unnecessary in this place to mention the titlcsand an exceedingly rich collection of letters, which to us are the best pragmatical history of his age, and together with the orations, constitute the most authentic commentary on his life. Cicero himself willingly acknowledges that the Greekssuch as Plato, Demosthenes, and their great poets and historianswere his instructors and superiors; and his incessant study of the master Works of the Greeks has unmistakably stamped upon his own writings the impress of universality and greatnessnay, in his orations he has perhaps even surpassed his models. The Orations in this collection are among the most nished and beautiful that Cicero ever delivered, and refer to some of the most important events in the history of his time. They furnish a fair specimen of his extraordinary powers as an orator, and are a proof that the author, as a man, is deserving of the highest praise that can be bestowed upon human exertions, and that, amid all the evils and temptations by which he was surrounded, he maintained his character pure and undeled. Soon after his rst public appearance as an orator, and after he had already acquired a name and reputation, he left Rome on the advice of his friends; and for the purpose of strengthening his health, travelled through Greece and Asia Minor, where he formed acquaintances and friendships with the most celebrated rhetoricians and philosophers. On his return he offered himself as a candidate for the quzestorship; and at the age of thirty, B.075, went as quaastor to Lilybaaum in Sicily, under the przetor Sex. Peducaeus. In the year B.c. 69, Cicero obtained the zedileship; and three years later, B.C. 66, he was przetor urhanus. hile invested with this office, he delivered, among other speeches, the splendid oration for the Manilian bill (pro lege. Mam lia). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Orations of M. Tullius Cicero: With Notes, for the Use of Schools and Colleges Tms volume of Select Orations of Cicero is intended to form one of the series of Classical Books published by the Messrs. Appleton, and was prepared at their request. After the pur pose was formed to issue such a volume, there appeared in England, edited by T. K. Arnold, a small volume containing the fourth book of the impeachment of Verres, the four speeches against Catiline, and the Speech for the poet Archias. It was the desire of the publishers that that volume should be made the basis of their edition, and accordingly, so far as it coincided with the selection usually read in the preparatory schools of our country, it has been incorporated in the present work. The Verrine oration, which is given in the English edition, has been omitted in the present, as it is the intention of the editor to issue it in some other form. The present volume will be found to contain those orations, which in this country usually go under the name of select orations. They are the same, and given in the same order as in the Boston edition, with the exception of the second Philip pic, which is omitted in the present volume.
