Book The Impeachment of Levi Hubbell Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Impeachment of Levi Hubbell Classic Reprint written by John Bell Sanborn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Impeachment of Levi Hubbell Those who believe that the world is growing better may re ceive encouragement from the fact that the only impeachment in the history of Wisconsin occurred in early days. Judge Levi Hubbell, 'who was thus differentiated from the other cir cuit judges of his time, was chosen at the first judicial election held in the state. The later immunity from impeachment may indicate either that our present officials are better than those of the past, or that we are less critical than our predeces sors, or less combative - probably the last. The campaign material of the present day may seem to belie this statement, but we are much more calm and restrained in political matters than our fathers were fifty years ago. This solitary impeach ment, moreover, did not relate to a strictly partisan office. Whatever has been the feeling aroused by party strife, and whatever have been the charges made in the heat of political campaigns, they have never found expression in this drastic action of the assembly. Against the judiciary, always well removed from political feeling, has this weapon alone been di rected, and in this one instance the senate refused to convict. Book The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson

Download or read book The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson written by Chester G. Hearn and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is commonly known that Andrew Johnson was the first president to be impeached, less well known are the circumstances that led to the unsuccessful campaign to remove him from office. This account of Johnson's political life in Washington (including brief coverage of his early career in Tennessee) focuses on his conflict with the Radical Republicans, a group of fanatical abolitionists who, after Lincoln's assassination, sought to dominate American government and punish the South as harshly as possible. Johnson's focus on healing the nation and his refusal to submit to the Radicals' demands led to his impeachment. Though Johnson was acquitted, his impeachment clearly illustrates the danger when one branch of government tries to dominate the others. This chronicle of the first U.S. presidential impeachment covers in detail the political forces that nearly removed him from office. Numerous illustrations, a bibliography and an index are included.

Book How the Good Guys Finally Won

Download or read book How the Good Guys Finally Won written by Jimmy Breslin and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller: A “superb” blow-by-blow account of how Tip O’Neill and his colleagues impeached Richard Nixon after Watergate (Chicago Tribune). Not long after burglars were caught raiding the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel, Congressman Tip O’Neill noticed that Democratic fundraising efforts for the 1972 election had stalled. Major contributors were under IRS investigation, and Republican lackeys were threatening further trouble if those donors didn’t close their checkbooks. O’Neill sensed a conspiracy coming from the Nixon administration, but it wasn’t until the scandal broke that he connected the threatened donors with the Watergate burglary. In the boldest move of his career, he did something that would shock the nation: O’Neill decided to impeach the President. To his fellow members of the House of Representatives, this was an ugly idea. But as evidence mounted against Nixon and his cronies, O’Neill led the charge against the President. This blow-by-blow, conviction-by-conviction account is a gripping reminder of how O’Neill and his colleagues brought justice to those who abused their power, and revived America after the greatest political scandal in its history. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Jimmy Breslin including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.
