Book excerpt: The seismic response of underground nuclear explosion tests at Pahute Mesa, NV displays variations which correlate with the geologic/geophysical structure. Investigations have been performed using borehole, gravity and wide angle seismic observations, with the aim of producing a geophysical model of the Silent Canyon caldera structure at Pahute Mesa. Empirical models of the density and seismic velocity have been formulated based on well logs. New gravity stations were obtained in 1985 and merged with older, lower quality data. A new gravity modeling technique was developed and applied to the modeling of a transect across the area. The resulting model supports the hypothesis that a high density and velocity blanket at a depth of a few kilometers. In 1986 a wide angle seismic reflection/refraction survey was completed near the gravity profile. The 15 km long line crossed the buried caldera boundary as well as important normal faults. The shot point was located on outcropping basement. Future interpretation of the combined gravity and seismic data should permit the construction of a predictive geophysical model. Book excerpt: The subject of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was seismic monitoring under a nuclear test ban - an application of scienti fic knowledge and modern technology for a political purpose. The international political objective of a comprehensive nuclear test ban provided in turn the motivation for our technical and scientific discussions. In order to obtain a historical perspec tive on the progress of the work towards a comprehensive test-ban treaty (CTB), it is necessary to go back to 1958, when a confer ence of scientific experts in Geneva made the first steps toward an international seismic monitoring system. However, agreement on actual capabilities of a monitoring system for verifying compliance with such a treaty was not achieved, and thus the conference did not lead to immediate political results. After the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963, which banned nuclear explosions in the atmosphere, outer space and under the seas, renewed interest in the seismological verification of a CTB took place. A number of countries initiated large-scale research efforts toward detecting and identifying underground nuclear explosions, and it was in this context that the large aperture seismic arrays NORSAR and LASA were established. This type of development resulted in excellent seismic data in digital form and was thus of great irnprotance to the seismological com munity.

Book excerpt: Two USGS catalogs of earthquakes in the Southern Great Basin were edited to remove man-made seisms. Editing reduced 11,988 entries to 8,161. Known location of underground nuclear explosions provided an opportunity to assess location accuracy showing that accuracy differed according to the source of earthquake data. No evidence was found of explosions triggering earthquakes distant from the working points. Relationships are developed between earthquake magnitude and explosion yield for explosions at Pahute Mesa and Yucca Flat. Comparison of the number of underground nuclear explosions with the number of earthquakes of comparable magnitude shows the former exceeds the latter when magnitude is greater than four. Edited catalogs are recommended for hazard analysis relative to repository siting because unedited catalogs tend to greatly exaggerate seismicity of the region.
