Book excerpt: This paper describes the results of a study of the seismic response behaviour of various lead-rubber bearings, combinations of bridge piers and lead-rubber bearings, and some multi-span bridges supported on combinations of elastomeric and lead-rubber bearings. The responses were determined by using a dynamic time-history program and mathematical models to which were ascribed the properties of the structures and bearings. An artificial earthquake was generated that excited single degree-of-freedom responses matching the acceleration response spectrum used in the design of bridge structures in New Zealand's geographical Zone A. The responses described in this paper are the background material from which a seismic design method has been developed. The design method enables a designer to distribute the seismic forces between piers and abutments in a manner most suitable for the particular bridge layout. The seismic pier and abutment shear forces and bending moments are governed by the relative distribution of lead-rubber bearings and elastomeric bearings between piers and abutments. Book excerpt: A study is made of the seismic behaviour of base-isolated highway briges with the objective of developing design procedures in the form of code-type approach. The recommendations of current codes concerning the use of energy dissipation mechanisms for the seismic design of bridges are reviewed. A model representing the bridge deck, piers, and the base-isolation system is used to evaluate the response of the bridge to a selected earthquake time history record and to evaluate the effects of various design parameters on the dynamic response. The results of this analysis are used in the development of design guidelines for the isolated bridge system. It was found that base isolation affects the design forces on piers and abutments as well as the deck displacements. An optimum design should provide a reasonable balance between the shear forces on supports and tolerable displacements. Two design procedures are proposed based on the time history and inelastic response spectra approaches. Simplified charts are presented which aid in the seismic design of new bridges as well as in the upgrading of existing ones.

Book excerpt: Elastomeric and lead-rubber bearings are two types of seismic isolation hardware widely implemented in buildings, bridges and other infrastructure in the United States and around the world. These bearings consist of a number of elastomeric (rubber) layers bonded to intermediate steel (shim) plates. The total thickness of rubber controls the low horizontal stiffness and the close spacing of the intermediate shims provides a large vertical stiffness for a given bonded rubber area and elastomer shear modulus. Conceptually, a lead-rubber bearing differs from an elastomeric bearing only through the addition of a lead-core typically located in a central hole. During earthquake ground shaking, the low horizontal stiffness of elastomeric and lead-rubber bearings translates into large lateral displacements, typically on the order of 100--200% rubber shear strain, that might lead to significant reductions in the axial load carrying capacity and vertical stiffness of the individual bearings. This dissertation presents an analytical and experimental investigation of the coupled horizontal-vertical response of elastomeric and lead-rubber bearings focusing on the influence of lateral displacement on the vertical stiffness. Component testing was performed with reduced scale low-damping rubber (LDR) and lead-rubber (LR) bearings to determine the vertical stiffness at various lateral offsets. The numerical studies included finite element (FE) analysis of the reduced scale LDR bearing. The results of the experimental and FE investigations were used to evaluate three analytical formulations to predict the vertical stiffness at a given lateral displacement. From component testing the vertical stiffness of the LDR and LR bearings was shown to decrease with increasing lateral displacement and at a lateral displacement equivalent to 150% rubber shear strain a 40--50% reduction in vertical stiffness was observed. One of the three analytical formulations, based on the Koh-Kelly two-spring model, was shown to predicted the measured reduction in vertical stiffness of the LDR and LR bearings at each lateral offset with reasonable accuracy. In addition, earthquake simulation testing was performed to investigate the coupled horizontal-vertical response of a bridge model isolated with either LDR or LR bearings. The results of simulations performed with three components of excitation were used to evaluate an equivalent linear static (ELS) procedure for the estimation of the vertical load due to the vertical ground shaking. The equivalent linear static procedure was shown to conservatively estimate measured maximum vertical loads due to the vertical component of excitation for most simulations.

The mechanical shortcomings and subsequent failure mechanisms associated with the early elastic seismic design philosophy are first presented, followed by a study of the applicability of seismic isolation systems in bridge structures. This investigation includes a discussion of the susceptibility of simple span bridges to seismic failure, an overview of the behavior of base isolated structures, a detailed description of isolation system components, an explanation of the mechanics of elastometric isolation bearings, and a presentation of the linear theory of seismic isolation. The qualitative investigation of seismic isolation systems is supplemented by a quantitative nonlinear time-history analysis that illustrates the response of a simple span bridge to seismic excitation. The analysis examines the effects of the varying stiffness of a lead-rubber elastometric bearing upon structural response when subjected to the 1940 El Centro earthquake.
