A trebling in population, unpredictable rainfall, and the arrival of Chinese investment have forced people into new ways of making ends meet and building up wealth - some doing much better than others. This book presents the search for new cash incomes, the shift of people from village to town, and the erosion of collective solidarity at household and village levels. Land, Investment, and Migration presents a mixed picture of a changing society. It shows the vibrancy of the village economy, rapid uptake of mobile phones and solar panels, and increased migration. It also shows the persistence of large family structures which offer some protection from the risks that many villagers face.

Book excerpt: In Mali and throughout the Sahel, governments increasingly rely on parastatal organizations to overcome the problems of lagging food production and rural poverty. This book examines the political and economic consequences of the efforts of one organization, Operation Riz-Segou in Mali, to increase smallholder food and cash crop production. Drawing extensively on fieldwork in Mali, the author finds that significant investments in irrigation facilities, financed by foreign aid, have not reduced the smallholder's vulnerability to the risks posed by weather and uncertain flood levels of the Niger River. The extension system discourages smallholder investment for long-term agricultural development because of its preoccupation with supervision and administrative control. Moreover, the Operation engages in many popular rural development activities—literacy programs, farmer training, women's artisanal centers—that give the facade of grassroots participation but in reality do not provide villagers a critically needed voice in local program administration. Comparing Operation Riz-Segou to similar parastatal agricultural development programs in the Sahel, Dr. Bingen discusses why only those policies deliberately designed and carefully implemented to share power with the majority of the people can lay the political and economic foundation required to overcome rural poverty and resolve the food crisis in the Sahel.

Book excerpt: It is known that conventional agriculture with the use of inputs and agrochemicals is not sustainable in time, causing numerous problems such as contamination of food, people and environment. Thus, agriculture must adapt to cause the least possible impact to the environment and to human beings. In this context, agroecology enters as an alternative to conventional production, being a production system more ecologically correct, not allowing the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Agroecological and organic systems are responsible for the production of food with less use of inputs external to the property, requiring a more efficient management of the vegetation cover and nutrient cycling. In addition, the use of genetically modified organism (GMO) is not allowed in agroecology, and crops of commercial interest such as corn are widely sold with these technologies, in this sense landraces seeds are an interesting option for this type of agriculture. Agroecology allows the production of safer food, resulting in more food security for the producer and consumer. Even though agriculture is more environmentally friendly, many challenges are faced by producers, fragile legislation, lack of products and specific technical assistance and marketing. In this sense, this book will seek to discuss the main aspects related to agroecology and the challenges it faces such as commercialization, certification, the importance of agrobiodiversity for agroecology, on crops and food security, social organizations that promote and encourage this type of agriculture, biological control in agroecology, homeopathy and food security.
