Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to the design and control of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators is presented. SMA wires are divided into many segments and their thermal states are controlled individually as a group of finite state machines. Instead of driving a current to the entire SMA wire and controlling the wire length based on the analogue strain-temperature characteristics, the new method controls the binary state (hot or cold) of individual segments and thereby the total displacement is proportional to the length of the heated segments, i.e. austenite phase. Although the thermo-mechanical properties of SMA are highly nonlinear and uncertain with a prominent hysteresis, Segmented Binary Control is robust and stable, providing characteristics similar to a stepping motor. However, the heating and cooling of each segment to its bi-stable states entail longer time and larger energy for transition. An efficient method for improving speed of response and power consumption is developed by exploiting the inherent hysteresis of SMA. Instead of keeping the extreme temperatures continuously, the temperatures return to intermediate "hold" temperatures closer to room temperature but sufficient to keep constant phase. Coordination of the multitude of segments having independent thermal states allows for faster response with little latency time even for thick SMA wires. Based on stress dependent thermo-mechanical characteristics, the hold temperature satisfying a given Stress Margin is obtained. The new control method is implemented using the Peltier effect thermoelectric devices for selective segment-by-segment heating and cooling. Experiments demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed method.

Book excerpt: Actuation equations for a tab control system have been derived based on one-dimensional shape memory behavior. This actuation model accounts for the active tendon having to pull against the relaxing tendon in a two-tendon actuator. That is, the passive tendon will provide a negative moment, subtracting from the total moment available for moving the tab. In addition, studies on the heat convection of SMA in water and moving water have been performed in an attempt to determine the available control moment in moving water and to predict the amount of energy needed. These results identify the research issues that must be overcome in making a recommendation regarding the feasibility of using SMA in a submarine for actuation. The result is that use of SMA is feasible, but the exact performance results are not predictable with the current state-of-the-art in SMA modeling. Furthermore, predictive design models specific to applications in moving water are needed to understand the issues of: (1) exact moment prediction, (2) exact heat signature, and (3) control predictions for maneuvering.

Book excerpt: In an attempt to explore an alternative to today's robot actuators, a new approach to artificial muscle actuator design and control is presented. The objective of this research is to coordinate the multitude of artificial muscle actuator axes for a large DOF (degree of freedom) robotic system based on dimensionality reduction. An array of SMA actuators is segmented into many independently controlled, spatially discrete volumes, each contributing a small displacement to create a large motion. Segmented Binary Control is proposed where each segment is controlled in an on-off manner, creating a stepper-motor like actuator. This overcomes hysteresis and other nonlinearities of the actuator material. The segmented cellular architecture of SMA wires is extended to a multi-axis actuator array by arranging the segments in a two-dimensional array. The multi-axis control is streamlined and coordinated using a grouping of segments called C-segments in order to activate multiple links of a robot mechanism in a coordinated manner. This allows control of large DOF with a small number of controls. The proposed approach is inspired by the segmented architecture of biological muscles and synergies, a strategy of grouping output variables to simplify the control of large number of muscles. Data from various hand postures are collected using data glove and used in creating the C-segment design that is capable of performing the given postures. A lightweight Robotic Hand with 16 DOF is built using shape memory alloy actuators. This hand weighs less than 1kg including 32 SMA actuators and control circuitry. Eight C-segments that are ON-off controlled are used to create sixteen given postures. In the future, this approach can be applied to applications where the control signal is inherently limited due to limited amount of information that can be extracted or transferred to the robot, such as brain machine interface and tele-operation.
