Book Home on the Horizon

Download or read book Home on the Horizon written by Sally Bayley and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of space and place, Sally Bayley examines the meaning of 'home' in American literature and culture. Moving from the nineteenth-century homestead of Emily Dickinson to the present-day reality of Bob Dylan, Bayley investigates the relationship of the domestic frontier to the wide-open spaces of the American outdoors. In contemporary America, she argues, the experience of home is increasingly isolated, leading to unsettling moments of domestic fallout. At the centre of the book is the exposed and often shifting domain of the domestic threshold: Emily Dickinson's doorstep, Edward Hopper's doors and windows, and Harper Lee's front porch. Bayley tracks these historically fragile territories through contemporary literature and film, including Cormac McCarthy's No Country For Old Men, Lars Von Trier's Dogville, and Andrew Dominik's The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford - works that explore local, domestic territories as emblems of nation. The culturally potent sites of the american home - the hearth, porch, backyard, front lawn, bathroom, and basement - are positioned in relation to the more conflicted sites of the American motel and hotel.

Book Beyond the Blue Horizon

Download or read book Beyond the Blue Horizon written by Brian Fagan and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know the tales of Columbus and Captain Cook, yet much earlier mariners made equally bold and world-changing voyages. In Beyond the Blue Horizon, archaeologist and historian Brian Fagan tackles his richest topic yet: the enduring quest to master the oceans, the planet's most mysterious terrain. From the moment when ancient Polynesians first dared to sail beyond the horizon, Fagan vividly explains how our mastery of the oceans changed the course of human history. What drove humans to risk their lives on open water? How did early sailors unlock the secrets of winds, tides, and the stars they steered by? What were the earliest ocean crossings like? With compelling detail, Fagan reveals how seafaring evolved so that the forbidding realms of the sea gods were transformed from barriers into a nexus of commerce and cultural exchange. From bamboo rafts in the Java Sea to triremes in the Aegean, from Norse longboats in the North Atlantic to sealskin kayaks in Alaska, Fagan crafts a captivating narrative of humanity's urge to challenge the unknown and seek out distant shores.

Book excerpt: Imagine the North American Indians as astronomers carefully watching the heavens, charting the sun through the seasons, or counting the sunrises between successive lumar phases. Then imagine them establishing observational sites and codified systems to pass their knowledge down through the centuries and continually refine it. A few years ago such images would have been abruptly dismissed. Today we are wiser. Living the Sky describes the exciting archaeoastronomical discoveries in the United States in recent decades. Using history, science, and direct observation, Ray A. Williamson transports the reader into the sky world of the Indians. We visit the Bighorn Medicine Wheel, sit with a Zuni sun priest on the winter solstice, join explorers at the rites of the Hopis and the Navajos, and trek to Chaco Canyon to make direct on-site observations of celestial events.

Book Hinterlands and Horizons

Download or read book Hinterlands and Horizons written by Margaret Chatterjee and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Chatterjee's new work Hinterlands and Horizons-a collection of nine phenomenological essays ranging across cultures and time periods-studies the historical and cultural evolution of the idea of amity and the concomitant concepts of fraternity, friendship, and tolerance. The work starts with the Enlightenment's idea of fraternity and its destruction during the fratricide of the French Terror. It includes chapters focusing upon the encounters between colonizers and missionaries, the impact of the Holocaust on the search for amity, the prospect for amity in contemporary multiculturalism, and the potential of religion to deepen the experience of amity. An incisive interdisciplinary analysis of the bases of discord and harmony, of history and memory, Hinterlands and Horizons will be an enduring contribution to the history of ideas.

Book Beyond the Horizon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Varindra Kumar Varma
  • Publisher : Strategic Book Publishing
  • Release : 2013-03
  • ISBN : 1622121228
  • Pages : 91 pages

Download or read book Beyond the Horizon written by Varindra Kumar Varma and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems of this collection are an expression of Indian thought, showing that the power of human resource is extraordinary. A boatman with a little oar can row his boat safely along dangerously rising waves if he is resourceful, self-confident, calm, patient, bold, and self-disciplined. We can, and we must, keep up hope and smile even in moments of helplessness. It is time that man discovers he is losing his Self with the changing times. With the loss of peace there is frustration. Man is beginning to lose two of his innate gifts: hope and smile. Man craves peace, but lives in tension. Living life with a negative attitude is intolerable. We cannot allow humans to lose their goodness, nor can we afford to lose the two precious gifts of hope and smile. We may sometimes feel helpless, but we must not give up hope. We must realize the power of human resource and preserve human sensibility. The author believes that he who recognizes his potential and possesses human sensibility can never be a defeated person. Given the present atmosphere, he made these ideas the theme of his poetry collection. Varindra Kumar Varma is an acclaimed Hindi writer who lives in Bilaspur, India. He was a professor and head of a philosophy department until he retired in 1995. He did some research on the logic of language, which prompted him to write an English grammar supplement in Hindi and A Grammar Guide to Clear and Correct Expression to help learners cultivate language sense and develop understanding of language use. He has authored a book on literary criticism and three collections of poetry. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/VarindraKumarVarm

Book Stretching Beyond the Horizon

Download or read book Stretching Beyond the Horizon written by Jean Hillier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative work Jean Hillier develops a new theory for students and researchers of spatial planning and governance which is grounded primarily in the work of Gilles Deleuze. The theory recognizes the complex interrelation between place qualities and the multiple space-time relational dynamics of spatial governance. Using empirical examples from England and Australia, Hillier identifies the power of networks and trajectories through which various actors territorialize space and explores the social and political responsibilities of spatial managers and decision-makers. She considers what spatial planning and urban management practices could look like if they were to be developed along Deleuzean lines, and suggests alternative framings for spatial practice: broad trajectories or 'visions' of the longer-term future and shorter-term, location-specific detailed plans and projects with collaboratively determined tangible goals.
