Book Seeking the Heart of Wisdom

Download or read book Seeking the Heart of Wisdom written by Joseph Goldstein and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2001-03-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two popular American Buddhist teachers provide an overview of insight meditation, offering a “skillful blend of pragmatic instruction, psychological insight, and perennial wisdom” (Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence) In Seeking the Heart of Wisdom, Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield present the central teachings and practices of insight meditation in a clear and personal language. The path of insight meditation is a journey of understanding our bodies, our minds, and our lives, of seeing clearly the true nature of experience. The authors guide the reader in developing the openness and compassion that are at the heart of this spiritual practice. For those already treading the path, as well as those just starting out, this book will be a welcome companion along the way. Among the topics covered are: • The hindrances to meditation—ranging from doubt and fear to painful knees—and skillful means of overcoming them • How compassion can arise in response to the suffering we see in our own lives and in the world • How to integrate a life of responsible action and service with a meditative life based on non-attachment Useful exercises are presented alongside the teachings to help readers deepen their understanding of the subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all feel it. To fit in is difficult; to run away is impossible. The only alternative is to manage, yet something significant is missing. Ancient knowledge has disappeared, as if no one will ever find it, but the divine intervenes, rebooting the current existence into a new and unexpected one. The divine voice unravels the ancient curse of ignorance placed on humans by humans, stretching back to millennia and beyonda primal evil that threatens everyones life unless one listens to the divine voice. But where is that voice? The Choice Maker offers clear ideas about the shocking realities that compel and engage humans to manage force and resources differently in relation to their place in earths different versionsone presently precarious and fleeting, and the other arriving with unseen power and ferocity. Author Hamid Rafizadeh pinpoints the divine voice in the Sermon on the Mount, which is critical to human life, survival, and well-being. The Sermon on the Mount is universal knowledge for everyone, not religious knowledge for select believers, and it can reveal to us a truth about life in both the current blue-skied earth and the new canopied earth that is coming soon. Are you willing to go on a profound journey? The one crucial to every humans life? The one recommended by the divine? Probably not, and history is on the unwilling side, yet The Choice Maker insists on showing you the way and the reasons for taking this journey.

Book Knowledge Flows in a Global Age

Download or read book Knowledge Flows in a Global Age written by John Krige and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-09-05 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A transnational approach to understanding and analyzing knowledge circulation. Focusing on what happens to knowledge at national borders, rather than treating it as flowing like currents across them, or diffusing out from center to periphery, the contributors to this collection stress the human intervention that shapes and drives how knowledge is processed, mobilized, and repurposed in transnational transactions to serve differing and uneven interests, constraints, and environments. The chapters consider both what knowledge travels and how it travels across borders of varying permeability that impede or facilitate its movement. They look closely at a vast range of platforms and objects of knowledge, from tangible commodities--like hybrid wheat seeds, penicillin, Robusta coffee, naval weaponry, and high-performance computers--to the more conceptual apparatuses of telecommunications, statistics, and food sovereignty. Moreover, this volume decenters the Global North, tracking how knowledge moves along multiple paths across the borders of Mexico, India, Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, the Soviet Union, China, Angola, and Palestine and the West Bank, as well as the United States and United Kingdom. The variety of the kinds of knowledge addressed in the chapters brings forth an extraordinary array of state and non-state actors and institutions committed to performing the work needed to move knowledge across national borders.

Book Looking for the Ancient Greeks

Download or read book Looking for the Ancient Greeks written by Martha Beck and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a response to Antonio Damasio’s Looking for Spinoza: Joy, Sorrow and the Feeling Brain. Damasio, a prominent neuroscientist, begins by explaining what the latest discoveries in the neurosciences tell us about human psychology. He rejects the two prominent models of human psychology since the Western Enlightenment, the blank slate and dualism. Instead, says Damasio, we now know that the brain and body are completely integrated through a complex system of neural maps. Damasio’s recognition of the complete unity of body, brain and mind leads him to the conclusion that we have to develop ideas and ideas of ideas and use them to reform our neural maps. This book presents Damasio’s own ideas about the most “serious” questions in life that we ought to use to reform ourselves and our societies, including homeostasis; spirituality; feelings; suffering and death; the value of religious traditions; and the value of the philosophical path to God among others. The book presents additional positions on the same serious questions from perspectives that it is hoped Damasio will consider adding to or, in some cases, replacing, his position. Most of the book is a discussion of many aspects of Ancient Greek culture, showing how it developed into a complex cultural system that aimed to create exactly the kind of integrated system of neural maps that Damasio claims is so important for us today. As such, this book strives to contribute to our collective need to reform our system of education based on our new understanding of the nature of the human psyche.

Download or read book Virtues Abounding written by Mark O’Keefe OSB and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living a morally good life today is a challenge. But we become fully and authentically human precisely by the decisions we make every day--some of them relatively simple, others complex and difficult. Once a choice is made, we still must claim the moral resolve and strength of character to implement it. Virtues are precisely the sustained habits that help us maneuver life's many choices and to become the good people that we want to be. St. Thomas Aquinas offers the classic Christian presentation of the four principal virtues of prudence, justice, courage, and temperance. But these are precisely cardinal or "hinge" virtues that provide the foundational framework for Aquinas's much broader presentation of a multitude of other virtues. Neglect of this larger array of moral attitudes for good living would miss the breadth of Aquinas's insights into a human life truly well-lived. Virtues Abounding explores, in contemporary language, the practical insights that Aquinas offers for the moral life today. Whether in university, seminary, or adult faith formation settings--whether for a deeper intellectual understanding of virtues or for personal reflection and growth--Virtues Abounding will provide new insight into a classic but too often overlooked storehouse of moral riches.
