Book excerpt: Peas (Pisum sativum L.) and faba beans (Vicia Faba L.) are important cool season legume crops, highly nutritious and used for soil fertility management in rotation systems for ecological N enrichment of fields. A survey of organic pea and faba bean seeds in organic agriculture from 2009 to 2012 indicates that seed-borne pathogens (Ascochyta blight complex and Fusarium spp.) are common but not high. The relationship between the seedlot infestation or environmental factors and infestation levels of the harvested seeds were weak pointing to the importance of soil-borne and potentially also wind borne inoculum. In past several cultural practices were studied singly and found partially effective. In this thesis the effects of a management approach combining biofumigation cover crops, mixed cropping and reduced tillage was tested for its effects on pea health under organic field conditions. Field trials were established twice on different fields with differencing in their soil types from 2009-2012. Different weather conditions also influenced the system performance. In both runs weeds were reduced by 50 % in the mixtures compared to the pure stands of peas. Reductions of pea yields due to reduced tillage were statistically significant in 2011 (29 %) but reduction was non significant in 2010 (21 %). Reductions due to mixing with oats were 30 % in 2010 and >50 % in 2011. Brassica cover crops had variable effects on yields and no differing effects on pea diseases. Nitrogen leftovers were low after all treatments. In 2010-11, wheat performed better after peas, but not in 2011-2012 in the overall better soil. Pea-oat intercropping at low seed rate with reduced tillage can be a useful tool to suppress weeds due to a more efficient use of available N resources and competition against weeds by oats. Reduced tillage with mixed cropping has no detrimental effects on pea root health but may reduce infestation of aphids. Book excerpt: The aim of the study was to assess the yielding of selected legume species with diversified morphological structure cultivated for seeds in ecological system. The field experiment was carried out in 2016,Äì2018. The first factor was legume species: faba bean, field pea, yellow lupine, and blue lupine, and the second factor was varieties of legumes: faba bean (Granit and Amulet), field pea (Hubal and Batuta), blue lupine (Kurant and Regent), and yellow lupine (Bursztyn and Perkoz). After the harvest, the grain yield of legume plants and the weight of a thousand seeds were determined. The plant structure was determined (length of the part of fruiting stem, number of pods and seeds per plant, number of seeds in the pod, number of fruiting nodes, number of pods and seeds from the node). In addition, the content of selected nutrients (protein, fiber, fat, macroelements) was determined in seeds. Studies showed that in ecological conditions, the pea cultivation, especially Hubal variety (with bipinnate leaves), enabled obtaining the largest seed yield, while the smallest seed yields yellow lupine independent of the morphological type. The self-completing varieties of faba bean, yellow lupine, and blue lupines were yielded at a higher level than varieties with a traditional growth type. Among the pea varieties assessed, the variety Hubal yielded better (with bipinnate leaves). Significantly, higher yield of protein is provided by faba bean cultivation, while the smaller level of pea and yellow lupine.

Book excerpt: Chemical fertilizers have had a significant impact on food production in the recent past, and are today an indispensable part of modern agriculture. On the other hand, the oil crisis of the 1970s and the current Middle East problems are constant reminders of the vulnerability of our fossil fuel dependent agriculture. There are vast areas of the developing world where N fertilizers are neither available nor affordable and, in most of these countries, balance of payment problems have resulted in the removal of N fertilizer subsidies. The external costs of environmental degradation and human health far exceed economic concerns. Input efficiency of N fertilizer is one of the lowest and, in turn, contributes substantially to environmental pollution. Nitrate in ground and surface waters and the threat to the stability of the ozone layer from gaseous oxides of nitrogen are major health and environmental concerns. The removal of large quantities of crop produce from the land also depletes soil of its native N reserves. Another concern is the decline in crop yields under continuous use of N fertilizers. These economic, environmental and production considerations dictate that biological alternatives which can augment, and in some cases replace, N fertilizers must be exploited. Long-term sustainability of agricultural systems must rely on the use and effective management of internal resources. The process of biological nitrogen fixation offers and economically attractive and ecologically sound means of reducing external nitrogen input and improving the quality and quantity of internal resources. In this book, we outline sustainability issues that dictate an increased use of biological nitrogen fixation and the constraints on its optimal use in agriculture.
