Book excerpt: A werewolf alpha must protect her pack from outsiders and rivals—all while avoiding falling for a snooping human—in this second in a witty and sexy paranormal romance series from the author of the Nice Girls series. Generations of werewolves have been secretly residing in a secluded valley a stone’s throw from Grundy, Alaska. So when a snooping Outsider comes to Grundy to investigate rumors of lycanthropic shenanigans in the area, the valley’s pack alpha, Maggie Graham, resolves to chase him away, even if doing so takes a quick bite on the butt. What a pity that researcher Nick Thatcher turns out to be so drool-worthy, and that his kisses make Maggie want to sit up and beg. Maggie just can’t seem to convince Nick to leave…and even worse, she can’t convince herself to stay away from him. Cross-species dating is problem enough for a harried alpha female, but on top of that, a rival group of werewolves is trying to move into the valley. With interpack war threatening, Maggie can’t afford to be distracted. Combining romance and a career can be tough for anyone; for a werewolf in love with a human, it may be disastrous.

Download or read book A Stephen Crane Encyclopedia written by Stanley Wertheim and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-10-28 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of The Red Badge of Courage in 1895 brought Stephen Crane instant fame at age 23. At 28, he was dead. In the brief span of his literary career, Crane enjoyed a significant measure of renown as well as notoriety, but his reputation rested almost entirely upon his war novel, and he felt that his talent had ultimately been misjudged. From his adolescence until his death, Crane was a professional journalist. To this day, most educated American readers know him only as the author of the most realistic Civil War novel ever written, three or four action-packed short stories, and a handful of iconoclastic free-verse poems. Crane was befriended and admired by some of the most important literary figures of his time, such as William Dean Howells, Willa Cather, Joseph Conrad, Henry James, and H. G. Wells. He has also been called a realist, a naturalist, an impressionist, a symbolist, and an existentialist. This reference book provides a more complete picture of Crane's short but furiously creative life and encourages a more extensive appreciation of his works. The volume includes hundreds of entries for members of Crane's immediate and extended family; close friends and associates; educational institutions that he attended; places where he resided; publishers and syndicates by whom he was employed; literary movements with which he is usually associated; and the works of fiction, poetry, and journalism that he wrote. Thus the book shows that he was a pioneer in the development of a number of genres in modern American fiction and poetry; that he was the first literary chronicler of the burgeoning slums of urban America who refused to sentimentalize his materials; that his Western stories reveal the steady retreat of the American frontier before the encroachments of a modern Europeanized civilization; and that his short stories and poems engage a number of enduring themes. Many of the entries cite works for further reading, and the volume includes a chronology and a bibliography of the most important studies of his life and writing.

Download or read book The Naturalistic Novel of the New World written by João Sedycias and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sedycias fills a significant gap in his comparative study of three major works: Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (American), Aluisio Azevedo's O cortico (Brazilian), and Federico Gamboa's Santa (Mexican). Sedycias investigates certain aspects of discontinuity between European naturalistic ideology and literary practices in the New World. He considers questions of cultural and religious backgrounds and also employs Rene Girard's theory of mimetic desire. All three works share an important common denominator: they present a prostitute as a major character and Sedycias examines attitudes towards the "fallen woman", desire, and religious salvation with this theme. Plot, structure and language provide traditional modes of comparative study (Sedycias translates all languages in the book himself) while the author questions the general assumptions regarding naturalistic literature and draws his conclusions regarding similarities and individual components of each work. Contents: I. The Prostitute in New World Naturalistic Ficiton: 1. Stephen Crane's Maggie: The Fallen woman as Religious Allegory; 2. Aluisio Azevedo's Representation of the Prostitute in O cortico; 3. Beyond Naturalism: Frederico Gamboa and the Mexican background of Santa; II. A Girardian Exegesis of the "Roman Experimental": 4. Rene Girard and the Concept of Mimetic Desire; 5. Memesis and Crisis in Maggie; 6. Violent Symmetries: Self and Other in O cortico; 7. Federico Gamboa as Geometrician of Desire; III. Conclusions: 8. Cultural Perspectives in New World Naturalistic Fiction; 9. Mimetic Desire and the Naturalistic Novel.
