Book excerpt: Barrel descriptions are presented of deep-sea sediment cores obtained by the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics on cruises of the R/V MAHI during 1970 in the western Pacific Ocean. Location of ship tracks and coring stations are shown. Core station data includes station number, core number, location, water depth, and length of cored sediment recovered. Descriptions include lithologic and structural sections, and descriptions of the sedimentary units encountered in each core. Nomenclature follows that established for deep-sea sediments by JOIDES for the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Recent modifications to the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics sediment analysis procedure are explained. (Modified author abstract).

(1970, 1973, 1975, 1976) for the Solomon Islands 1968-1969 cruises, Murray Fracture Zone and Western Pacific 1970 cruises, and Eastern and Western Pacific 1971 and 1972 cruises, serve as a guide to samples available through the Sediment Core Analysis Laboratory of the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics.

Location of ship tracks and coring stations are shown. Corrected satellite navigation determined coordinates for each coring operation are indicated, and water depth, length of core, and age of oldest sediment in the cores are given. Descriptions include structural and lithologic sequences in each core, as well as a breakdown of the sedimentary units of each core as determined by microscopic examination. Diagrams of sedimentary structures and boundaries are included along with descriptions of color variations and textural variations. This Institute's sediment analysis procedure is described briefly.
