Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sedgwick County Kansas: A Church and Community Survey This pamphlet is one of a series which present the results of a Church Survey in the field of Town and Country, begun under the auspices of the Interchurch World Movement, and completed by the Committee on Social and Religious Surveys. From among the one thousand county surveys which the Interchurch had undertaken and in which considerable progress had been made, a limited number were selected for completion on an intensive plan, in the belief that these would throw light upon some of the more important problems of church and community life. The selection was made with great care. Certain fundamental factors were examined in all of the counties in which a survey had been undertaken, so that outstanding abnormalities might be avoided, or proper account taken of them. Agricultural, educational and religious officials were consulted. State and Federal census reports studied. The counties selected are so distributed over the United States as to afford fairly typical specimens of Town and Country Survey for all the great regions into which the country is divided. It must be recognized, however, that no county can be completely typical of any larger area in respect to every situation. These studies have been made from the point of view of the church recognizing, however, that economic and social conditions affect church life. The community has, therefore, been studied as well as the church. Communities have been located and defined, their economic background investigated, their population analyzed. Those factors which enter into the make-up of the social mind, such as social life, public opinion, leadership, means of communication, social affiliations and community spirit, have all been evaluated. Community activities, particularly those dealing with amusement and recreation, have been recognized and noted. The schools and their contribution to community life have been taken into account. And all has been from the point of view of the church. The study of the church has been made from the point of view of its history, its equipment, its financial system, its members and their occupations, its services and their type, the parish, organizations such as the Sunday School, the Young People's Societies and their program. Book St James Episcopal Church

Book excerpt: In 2020, St. James Episcopal Church in Wichita, Kansas celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1920. This book is a collaboration of efforts over the years to give a glimpse of the history and impact of the church in the Wichita community. The church originally held services in the old St. Stephens' Episcopal Church building located at First Street and New York and then moved to its current location at 3750 East Douglas Ave. A new sanctuary was built in 1925 after four years of perfecting the plans by The Reverend Otis Gray and HG Overend, architect, so that every detail would be exact. The sanctuary windows were completed in the 1940s and 1950s by the Von Gerichten Company of Columbus, Ohio. The education wing (Parish House) was completed in 1949 which added many classrooms, kitchen, office, bride's room and an auditorium. Descriptions of each of the twelve rectors and their accomplishments as well as the traditions and unique parts of the Episcopal service and ceremonies are also included.

Book The Church on the Changing Frontier A Study of the Homesteader and His Church

Download or read book The Church on the Changing Frontier A Study of the Homesteader and His Church written by Helen Olive Belknap and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Church on the Changing Frontier' is a published study on the work of Protestant city, town and country churches in four counties on the Range. It discusses the effect on the Church of the changing conditions in the Rocky Mountain States, and the task of the Church in ministering to the situation which existed in its day. The four counties studied in the book are Beaverhead in Montana, Sheridan in Wyoming, Union in New Mexico and Hughes in South Dakota. In the spring of 1921 the field worker, Miss Helen Belknap, of the Committee on Social and Religious Surveys, visited these counties, verified the results of the survey work previously done, and secured additional information not included in the original study. This book is the result of that work.
