Download or read book Secrets and Lies written by Dale F. Eickelman and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secrecy, deception, and lying are as basic to social life as sharing, trust, and community. Yet most moral and ethical codes treat secrecy and lying as dangerous and wrong, or at best as necessary evils appropriate to unusual or extreme situations. As part of the “social imaginary” of any society—accepted and shared background understandings concerning how families, communities, organizations, and institutions operate—learning to keep secrets, deceive, lie, and deny are part of the moral rules-in-use is an integral part of becoming a full and trusted person. In recent years, secrecy and lying have become increasingly recognized in the social imaginary of most societies, but there remains a strong tendency to deflect attention from recognizing the pervasiveness importance of secrecy and lying. Tales of government deception, corporate fraud, and the sexual improprieties of heads of state and royalty enter into public discussion throughout the world. Spy novels in American and European societies make secrecy and deception an adventure, yet deflect attention from the extent to which secrecy and lying are so much apart of the ordinary fabric of society that calling attention to their pervasiveness is dismissed as cynicism or hypocrisy. Police training manuals inculcate techniques of deception and deceit, and the defenders of such techniques consider them appropriate provided that interrogators use them to ascertain the “truth” and stay within bounds accepted by courts, lawyers, and formal review boards—or at least do not come to their formal attention. Whether practices of lying or deception are given the softer label of “deniability” in politics or no label at all, as in corporate deception or advertising, family life, secrecy and lying are pervasive values that help define the boundaries of person, community, and belonging. This book suggests how secrecy and lying can be made a more explicit element of the anthropology of knowledge. As an alternative to a moralizing approach to the subject, it shows how secrecy and lying work in practice—and why they are tolerated and even admired—in different cultural and social contexts. The book, an estimated 200 pages manuscript, is intended to provoke new thinking on the subject and awareness of the role of secrecy and lying in society.

Book The Deceit Of Secret Rapture Theory

Download or read book The Deceit Of Secret Rapture Theory written by Zélio Cabral and published by Clube de Autores. This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adherents of the Pre-trib claim that God will not allow the Church suffers in the period known as the Great Tribulation. But does God s Word really teaches that there will be a secret rapture seven years before the Great Tribulation? For Jesus clearly states in Matthew 24:31 and the apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4.16-17 confirms that there is nothing secret and silent in his second coming. Another incongruity of this view is the idea of a rapture to take the Church and the Holy Spirit before the earth before the Antichrist manifestation. If this were the case, the Antichrist would be anti what? A reductionism of the mission of the Church and of the Holy Spirit, and to promote escapism and alienation hurts the good sense. Christians of the generation of Christ s return are better of the early Christians? No. Absolutely not! In this book, the author exposes the true teaching of Scripture on this subject. Starting with the teaching of Jesus and his apostles warned that the Church of all times that it would pass through many tribulations, including the so-called Great Tribulation. Therefore, you reader who sticks to the pre-trib position, or you reader who does not adhere to any eschatological position of Christ s return, I invite you to read this book, reflect and analyze for yourself, as the Bereans did at the time of apostle Paul and thus convince the dangerous path, wide and spacious pre-trib teaching, which is apostasy (deviation from sound apostolic doctrine) and walk according to the teaching of the Lord Jesus which was confirmed by his apostles and is defended by over 1800 years in the history of the Church and also for all those who are and who truly love the Tour of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: A fascinating and timely biography of J. Edgar Hoover from a Sibert Medalist. "King, there is only one thing left for you to do. You know what it is. . . . You better take it before your filthy, abnormal, fraudulent self is bared to the nation.” Dr. Martin Luther King received this demand in an anonymous letter in 1964. He believed that the letter was telling him to commit suicide. Who wrote this anonymous letter? The FBI. And the man behind it all was J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI's first director. In this unsparing exploration of one of the most powerful Americans of the twentieth century, accomplished historian Marc Aronson unmasks the man behind the Bureau- his tangled family history and personal relationships; his own need for secrecy, deceit, and control; and the broad trends in American society that shaped his world. Hoover may have given America the security it wanted, but the secrets he knew gave him — and the Bureau — all the power he wanted. Using photographs, cartoons, movie posters, and FBI transcripts, Master of Deceit gives readers the necessary evidence to make their own conclusions. Here is a book about the twentieth century that blazes with questions and insights about our choices in the twenty-first. Back matter includes an epilogue, an author’s note, source notes, and a bibliography.
