I should've learned my lesson after having my heart eviscerated into tiny, unrecognizable pieces. But no, not me. That would be way too simple, and my life is nothing but. And I would gladly get on my knees for him. Five years ago, I left home with a broken heart and a lifetime worth of sins. Now, I'm back with a naïve hope that I can make things right. How I expect to do that when I have no intention of confessing my sins remains to be seen. One thing is for sure. I have to stay away from the one person who was why I left home in the first place - the man who once called me his Achilles. His flower. His secret. His stepdaughter. I'm not the good girl in a love story. I don't deserve a happily ever after. I have secrets on top of secrets on top of secrets. I've sowed, and I've reaped, and something tells me karma isn't done with me yet. ***This is a BWWM contemporary romance novel. ***Contains mature subject matter. Download or read book Secrets Lies and Consequences written by Bruce Lincoln and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-12 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale of a legendary scholar, an unsolved murder, and the mysterious documents that may connect them In early 1991, Ioan Culianu was on the precipice of a brilliant academic career. Culianu had fled his native Romania and established himself as a widely admired scholar at just forty-one years of age. He was teaching at the University of Chicago Divinity School where he was seen as the heir apparent to his mentor, Mircea Eliade, a fellow Romanian expatriate and the founding father of the field of religious studies, who had died a few years earlier. But then Culianu began to receive threatening messages. As his fears grew, he asked a colleague to hold onto some papers for safekeeping. A week later, Culianu was in a Divinity School men's room when someone fired a bullet into the back of his head, killing him instantly. The case was never solved, though the prevailing theory is that Culianu was targeted by the Romanian secret police as a result of critical articles he wrote after the fall of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. What was in those mysterious papers? And what connection might they have to Culianu's death? The papers eventually passed into the hands of Bruce Lincoln, and their story is at the heart of this book. The documents were English translations of articles that Eliade had written in the 1930s, some of which voiced Eliade's support for the Iron Guard, Romania's virulently anti-Semitic mystical fascist movement. Culianu had sought to publish some of these articles but encountered fierce resistance from Eliade's widow. In this book, author Bruce Lincoln explores what the articles reveal about Eliade's past, his subsequent efforts to conceal that past, his complex relations with Culianu, and the possible motives for Culianu's shocking murder.

Download or read book Mike Leigh written by Tony Whitehead and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mike Leigh may well be Britain’s greatest living film director; his worldview has permeated our national consciousness. This book gives detailed readings of the nine feature films he has made for the cinema, as well as an overview of his work for television. Written with the co-operation of Leigh himself, this is the first study of his work to challenge the critical privileging of realism in histories of the British cinema, placing the emphasis instead on the importance of comedy and humour: of jokes and their functions, of laughter as a survival mechanism, and of characterisations and situations that disrupt our preconceptions of ‘realism’. Striving for the all-important quality of truth in everything he does, Leigh has consistently shown how ordinary lives are too complex to fit snugly into the conventions of narrative art. From the bittersweet observation of Life is Sweet or Secrets and Lies, to the blistering satire of Naked and the manifest compassion of Vera Drake, he has demonstrated a matchless ability to perceive life’s funny side as well as its tragedies.

Download or read book We Want to Believe written by Amy M. Donaldson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first episode to the latest feature film, two main symbols provide the driving force for the iconic television series The X-Files: Fox Mulder's "I Want to Believe" poster and Dana Scully's cross necklace. Mulder's poster may feature a flying saucer, but the phrase "I want to believe" refers to more than simply the quest for the truth about aliens. The search for extraterrestrial life, the truth that is out there, is a metaphor for the search for God. The desire to believe in something greater than ourselves is part of human nature: we want to believe. Scully's cross represents this desire to believe, as well as the internal struggle between faith and what we can see and prove. The X-Files depicts this struggle by posing questions and exploring possible answers, both natural and supernatural. Why would God let the innocent suffer? Can God forgive even the most heinous criminal? What if God is giving us signs to point the way to the truth, but we're not paying attention? These are some of the questions raised by The X-Files. In the spirit of the show, this book uses the symbols and images presented throughout the series to pose such questions and explore some of the answers, particularly in the Christian tradition. With a focus on key themes of the series--faith, hope, love, and truth--along the way, this book journeys from the desire to believe to the message of the cross.
Download or read book The Only One A Memoir of Hope written by Wendy Moses and published by Wendy Moses. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the age of twelve, Wendy Moses had been diagnosed with three life-threatening diseases. Cushing’s Syndrome, a neuroendocrine tumor, and multiple endocrine neoplasia plagued her body. Because no doctor had ever seen a case like hers before, she was given less than six months to live. Suddenly her childhood was filled with tests, scans, and appointments while multiple doctors tried anything and everything to save her life. This is a story of fear, as Wendy’s family had to stare into the face of death. It is a story of pain, as wave after wave of bad news battered her young heart. It is a story of dishonesty, as she tried to cover her mental and emotional pain with drugs. It is a story of solitude, as being the only one left her heart empty and starving for empathy from those who would never understand. Wendy’s story is also filled with love from her family. It is filled with comfort in the many prayers and well-wishes from countless friends and strangers. It is filled with peace that there is a purpose for her years of pain. But most of all, this is a story of hope. Hope in forgiveness, hope in healing, hope in the knowledge that her life holds value. Hope that maybe just one life will be changed by her story.
Download or read book Rooms in Dramatic Realism written by Fred Miller Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic Realism, since its birth in the hectic late years of the nineteenth century, gave theatrical and thematic energy to the interaction between a play’s text and the way that it looked on the stage. Characters began to find themselves in rooms and settings that played an active and changing role in the drama, and their dialogue and reactions evolved in time with these changes. As life itself became more elaborate during the 20th Century, so these rooms were invaded and then defined by the outside world. Fred Miller Robinson’s enjoyable and stimulating essays on this enduring genre tackle the dreams and anxieties of the middles classes of the Industrial Revolution – dreams of domestic comfort and refuge, and anxieties about how entrapping that comfort could be. Moving from Ibsen to Chekhov and onwards into later plays in which the reality of ‘Realism’ comes under scrutiny, this is a book to dip into before a performance or to study during a class.
