Book Factors Correlating with Teachers Use of Computers in the Classroom

Download or read book Factors Correlating with Teachers Use of Computers in the Classroom written by Samia A. Wahab and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-11-11 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need to understand the factors correlating with teachers' instructional use of computers, because much of the present research focuses on students rather than teachers. This study examines several factors relating to the use of computers in the classroom by teachers. The factors examined include teacher attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and outside influences. This was done by a review of the present literature, administering two surveys, and analyzing the survey data. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected high schools in a Midwest city participating in the study. Data from the survey was then examined to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. The results of this study will help improve understanding of teachers' instructional computer use.

Book Gender Differences in Computer and Information Literacy

Download or read book Gender Differences in Computer and Information Literacy written by Eveline Gebhardt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a systematic investigation into internationally comparable data gathered in ICILS 2013. It identifies differences in female and male students’ use of, perceptions about, and proficiency in using computer technologies. Teachers’ use of computers, and their perceptions regarding the benefits of computer use in education, are also analyzed by gender. When computer technology was first introduced in schools, there was a prevailing belief that information and communication technologies were ‘boys’ toys’; boys were assumed to have more positive attitudes toward using computer technologies. As computer technologies have become more established throughout societies, gender gaps in students’ computer and information literacy appear to be closing, although studies into gender differences remain sparse. The IEA’s International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) is designed to discover how well students are prepared for study, work, and life in the digital age. Despite popular beliefs, a critical finding of ICILS 2013 was that internationally girls tended to score more highly than boys, so why are girls still not entering technology-based careers to the same extent as boys? Readers will learn how male and female students differ in their computer literacy (both general and specialized) and use of computer technology, and how the perceptions held about those technologies vary by gender.

Book Exploring Secondary Agriscience Teachers and Students Use Attitude Toward Knowledge and Perceptions of Computers and Technology Tools

Download or read book Exploring Secondary Agriscience Teachers and Students Use Attitude Toward Knowledge and Perceptions of Computers and Technology Tools written by Kimberley Ann Miller and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers are an ever changing facet of everyday life; almost all businesses, including schools, are dependent on technology, from research to information delivery. With the rapid advances in computer technology made every year combined with the increasing availability of computers to students, it is important to continually investigate how secondary agriscience teachers' and students' use and view computer technology, both personally and educationally, in order to effectively utilize this advancing educational tool for the benefit of both groups. The purpose of this study was to describe agriscience teachers' and students use, attitude toward, knowledge and perceptions of computers and technology tools in order to better understand how secondary agriscience teachers use computers in their instruction and how agriscience students use computers for school and social purposes. This study explored both teacher and student opinions about school assignments that require computer use and how often both groups utilize the computer for work and entertainment.

While we have teacher training to train teachers to use IT confidently and effectively in classroom, we should also teach our students to learn independently with the help of IT. In order to achieve the goal, we should develop some strategies to help our students to attain necessary IT skills. Most teachers think that it is the responsibility of the computer panel. Students are expected to be trained in the computer lessons and then apply their IT knowledge to other subjects. However, having attained certain IT skills does not mean those students can use IT to learn. It is better to train the students IT skills in subject context. So cooperation of different subjects is necessary. In this project a plan to coordinate different subjects in using IT in teaching will be formulated and the plan will be tried out in my school (a Government subsidized secondary school). The plan will only involve teachers and students in lower forms (S.1 to S.3). In this project the following areas will be discussed: The modification of the curriculum of Computer Literacy in lower forms, the cooperation between computer panel and other panels, teaching schedule and teaching plans of lessons using IT in different subjects and the evaluation of the effectiveness of the plan. Since not all the topics are suitable for using IT to learn, we should first choose some suitable topics from different subjects. Then we should identify the IT skills needed for these topics. Finally, we design projects on these topics. The Computer panel will be responsible for teaching students the relevant IT skills and other subject panels are responsible for providing the subject information for the project. For example, Sketchpad is a good software for demonstrating and exploring theories of Geometry. Instead of teaching Sketchpad in Mathematics lesson, it can be taught in computer Literacy. The students can then learn the software with hands-on exercise in computer room rather than watching the demonstration shown by the teacher in normal classroom. Furthermore, it saves mathematics teachers' time teaching software during lesson. In short, by doing this project students can apply their IT skills learnt in the computer lesson in other subjects to make their learning more effective. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b2959990 Subjects: Computer literacy - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong Junior high school students - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes High school teachers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes Secondary students - Attitudes

Book excerpt: Computer Literacy: Issues and Directions for 1985 is based on a conference entitled "National Goals for Computer Literacy in 1985", held in Reston, Virginia, on December 18-20, 1980, under the auspices of the National Science Foundation. The conference provided a forum for discussing views on computer literacy, as well as methods for infusion of computer-related objectives and activities into existing curricula for different age levels. Issues and barriers to developing national goals for achieving a computer-literate society in the United States are also examined. Comprised of 31 chapters, this book begins by presenting four major approaches to a perspective on computer literacy: impact of computer literacy on the citizenry; major national components of a computer literacy program; development of an information handling curriculum for an evolving computer literacy concept; and a 30-year historical overview of "computer events in three strands" (research/development/technology, education, and social/political institutional). The next section considers the definitions and requirements of computer literacy as they impact society, students, and teachers. The use of the computer in cognitive research and in problem solving is also discussed, together with curriculum development in computer literacy. This monograph will be of interest to students, teachers, school administrators, and educational policymakers.

Book Multiliteracies for a Digital Age

Download or read book Multiliteracies for a Digital Age written by Stuart A. Selber and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2004-01-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiliteracies for a Digital Age serves as a guide for composition teachers to develop effective, full-scale computer literacy programs that are also professionally responsible by emphasizing different kinds of literacies. Stuart A. Selber also proposes methods for helping students move among these literacies in strategic ways. Defining computer literacy as a domain of writing and communication, Selber addresses the questions that few other computer literacy texts consider: What should a computer literate student be able to do? What is required of literacy teachers to educate such a student? How can functional computer literacy fit within the values of teaching writing and communication as a profession? Reimagining functional literacy in ways that speak to teachers of writing and communication, he builds a framework for computer literacy instruction that blends functional, critical, and rhetorical concerns in the interest of social action and change. Multiliteracies for a Digital Age reviews the extensive literature on computer literacy and critiques it from a humanistic perspective. This approach, which will remain useful as new versions of computer hardware and software inevitab
