Book Developing Environmental Action Competence in High School Students

Download or read book Developing Environmental Action Competence in High School Students written by Anne Kinney Stephens and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are multiple avenues through which environmental literacy may be increased, most scholarly understanding emerges from studies of environmental education (EE) that most frequently take place outside of the formal K-12 curriculum. A substantial body of research now documents the importance of addressing students' leadership and social skills as part of developing environmental literacy, or what has been termed "environmental action competence", however there is a gap in studies that address how these constructs of environmental literacy are addressed in schools. The confidence and the ability to take action on an issue in one's environment is the ultimate goal of EE, yet it is difficult to nurture these abilities in the structure of a typical school day. The development of environmental action competence in youth involves much more than the teaching of content knowledge. It requires the ability for students to interact with one another, adults, and community members in a variety of settings. To better understand how learning occurs in diverse populations, this research examined the multiple contexts in which environmental learning occurs, addressing the physical, social, and personal dimensions, both in-school and out-of-school and at various levels of formality, or what researchers have referred to as "hybrid space". The goal of my research was to explore how one particular approach to high school reform, the California Partnership Academy (CPA) model, is (or is not) creating the conditions and mechanisms for hybrid spaces, and how these hybrid spaces contribute to the development of environmental action competence in students. My research was carried out using a nested case study design during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years. Using secondary source data obtained through CPA reports to the California Department of Education and follow-up phone interviews with 12 CPA coordinators, I examined 18 CPAs with an environmental theme for similarities and differences in their approaches to developing environmental literacy in students. I then conducted a close case study on one particular school, following students and teachers in multiple settings over the two-year period. Using secondary source data, participant observations, and semi-structured interviews with 26 youth and adult participants, I analyzed learning scenarios through the lens of hybridity theory for how they contributed to the development of environmental action competence in youth. In Chapter One, I provide a rationale and motivation for undertaking this study and provide and overview of each of the three chapters that have been written in the format of individual journal articles. In Chapter 2, I used the lens of hybridity theory to examine how hybrid spaces offer more opportunities for students to develop the dispositions associated with positive youth development, thus supporting their ability to take action toward issues that concern them. Chapter 3 is a review of the literature on how frameworks for environmental literacy have evolved since the 1977 Tbilisi Declaration in light of more recent research into the understanding of behavior. I build upon the theoretical framework for environmental action competence and examine scenarios for how an environmental action competence framework can be implemented in schools. I discuss the implications for research in this area, including pedagogical practices, assessment, and large-scale implementation of programs that support environmental action competence. Chapter 4 represents the triangulation of data collected in the comparison study of the 18 CPAs with data from the in-depth case study school to look for evidence of environmental action competence in students. The evidence suggests that hybrid space supported the development of many of the constructs of environmental action competence, however younger students were not always able to ground their actions in accurate conceptual understanding. In addition, students' motivations for taking action frequently focused on community health rather than the natural environment, suggesting the need for environmental educators to consider the broader range of experiences of youth living in increasingly urbanized settings. Finally, Chapter 5 provides the summary and analysis of my findings, and discusses their implications in the context of current educational legislation and policies. By examining the organization and instructional strategies of the 18 CPAs, this study contributes to the environmental education research field by linking program elements to the development of environmental action competence in youth, while also providing recommendation for schools, teachers and administrators to apply.

Book Environmental Education in Indonesia

Download or read book Environmental Education in Indonesia written by Lyn Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia’s wealth of natural resources is being exploited at breakneck speed, and environmental awareness and knowledge among the populace is limited. This book examines how young people learn about the environment to see how education can help to develop environmental awareness and avert vast environmental destruction, not only in Indonesia, but also in the Global South more generally. Based on in-depth studies conducted in the cities of Yogyakarta and Surabaya, complemented with surveys of students in secondary schools, Environmental Education in Indonesia examines educational curricula, pedagogy and "green" activities to reveal what is currently being done in schools to educate children about the environment. The book investigates the shortcomings in environment education, including underqualified teachers, the civil service mentality, the still-pervasive chalk-and-talk pedagogy and the effect of the examination system. It also analyses the role of local government in supporting (or not) environmental education, and the contribution of environmental NGOs. The book establishes that young people are not currently being exposed to effective environmental education, and the authors propose that the best and most culturally appropriate way forward in Indonesia is to frame pro-environment behaviour and responsibility as a form of citizenship, and specifically that environmental education should be taught as a separate subject. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary Indonesia and Southeast Asia, education for sustainability and environmental education, as well as sustainability and sustainable development more generally.

Book A People s Curriculum for the Earth

Download or read book A People s Curriculum for the Earth written by Bill Bigelow and published by Rethinking Schools. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A People’s Curriculum for the Earth is a collection of articles, role plays, simulations, stories, poems, and graphics to help breathe life into teaching about the environmental crisis. The book features some of the best articles from Rethinking Schools magazine alongside classroom-friendly readings on climate change, energy, water, food, and pollution—as well as on people who are working to make things better. A People’s Curriculum for the Earth has the breadth and depth ofRethinking Globalization: Teaching for Justice in an Unjust World, one of the most popular books we’ve published. At a time when it’s becoming increasingly obvious that life on Earth is at risk, here is a resource that helps students see what’s wrong and imagine solutions. Praise for A People's Curriculum for the Earth "To really confront the climate crisis, we need to think differently, build differently, and teach differently. A People’s Curriculum for the Earth is an educator’s toolkit for our times." — Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine and This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate "This volume is a marvelous example of justice in ALL facets of our lives—civil, social, educational, economic, and yes, environmental. Bravo to the Rethinking Schools team for pulling this collection together and making us think more holistically about what we mean when we talk about justice." — Gloria Ladson-Billings, Kellner Family Chair in Urban Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison "Bigelow and Swinehart have created a critical resource for today’s young people about humanity’s responsibility for the Earth. This book can engender the shift in perspective so needed at this point on the clock of the universe." — Gregory Smith, Professor of Education, Lewis & Clark College, co-author with David Sobel of Place- and Community-based Education in Schools

Book Environmental Education

Download or read book Environmental Education written by David Hughes-Evans and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Education: Key Issues of the Future contains the proceedings of a conference held at the College of Technology in Hampshire, England. The conference provided a forum for discussing the role of education in environmental training, analyzing the problems of environmental education, and proposing innovations that might well affect the future. Comprised of eight chapters, this book first looks at the methods for use in the professional training of teachers, with reference to the research and development studies that have been carried out on these training methods. The place of environmental studies in the school and the factors that have led to an increased interest in these studies are considered. The chief obstacles to the progress of these studies in the secondary schools are outlined. The reader is then introduced to the role of environmental science in the formal education service; problems of subject integration in environmental science; and the UNESCO/UNEP environmental program and its implications for environmental education in Britain. International cooperation in environmental education is also discussed, along with part-time and recurrent education in the environmental field. This monograph will be of value to engineers, planners, biologists, lawyers, geologists, and others with an active interest in environmental problems.

Book Safe and Healthy School Environments

Download or read book Safe and Healthy School Environments written by Howard Frumkin M.D. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-03 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of children and adults across the nation spend their days in school buildings, and they need safe, healthy environments to thrive, learn, and succeed. This book explores the school environment using the methods and perspectives of environmental health science. Though environmental healht has long been understood to be an important factor in workplaces, homes, and communities, this is the first book to address the same basic concerns in schools. The editors are physicians and educators trained in pediatrics, occupational and environmental medicine, and medical toxicology, and the authors are experts in their fields drawn from across the United States and abroad. Each section of the book addresses a different concern facing schools today. In the first six sections, the various aspects of the school environment are examined. Chapters include the physical environment of the school, air quality issues, pest control, cleaning methods, food safety, safe designs of playgrounds and sports fields, crime and violence prevention, and transportation. In the last two sections, recommendations are made for school administrators on how to maximize the health of their schools. Appropriately evaluating the school environment, implementing strategies to address children and adults with disabilities, emphasizing health services, infectious disease prevention and recognition, and occupational health for faculty and staff are all addressed. The entire book is evidence-based, readable, generously illustrated, and practical. An indispensable resource for parents, school staff, administrators, government officials, and health professionals, this book is for anyone who cares about the health of our schools.
