Book On the Instability of Goertler Vortices to Nonlinear Traveling Waves

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent theoretical work has shown that strongly nonlinear, high wavenumber Gortler vortices developing within a boundary layer flow are susceptible to a secondary instability which takes the form of travelling waves confined to a thin region centered at the outer edge of the vortex. This work considered the case in which the secondary mode could be satisfactorily described by a linear stability theory and in the current paper our objective is to extend this investigation into the nonlinear regime. At this stage not only does the secondary mode become nonlinear but it also interacts with itself so as to modify the governing equations for the primary Gortler vortex. In this case then, the vortex and the travelling wave drive each other and, indeed, the whole flow structure is described by an infinite set of coupled, nonlinear differential equations. A Stuart-Watson type of weakly nonlinear analysis of these equations is undertaken and it concludes in particular, that on this basis there exist stable flow configurations in which the travelling mode is of finite amplitude. Impactions of our findings for practical situations are discussed and it is shown that the theoretical conclusions drawn here are in good qualitative agreement with available experimental observations.

Book Control of G rtler Vortices in High speed Boundary Layers

Download or read book Control of G rtler Vortices in High speed Boundary Layers written by Radwa Alaziz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Görtler vortices develop in boundary layer flows over concave surfaces due to the imbalance between centrifugal forces and the wall-normal pressure gradient. These vortices can be efficient precursors to transition in boundary layers exposed to freestream disturbance or surface non-uniformities, because they can alter the mean flow causing the laminar flow to breakdown into turbulence. In this thesis, a control technique aimed at reducing the energy associated with Görtler vortices that develop in supersonic boundary layers is introduced and tested. The control algorithm is based on distributed blowing and suction, with sensors placed either in the flow or at the wall. The result show that there is a dependence between the efficiency of the control algorithm and the spanwise separation of the vortices, that is the energy reduction is more significant for larger spanwise separations. The efficiency of the control algorithm seems to be insensitive to the variation of the Mach number.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines secondary instabilities in compressible boundary layers at Mach numbers M at = 0, 0.8, 1.6, and 4.5. We find that there is a broad-dand of highly unstable 3-d secondary disturbances whose growth rates increase with increasing primary wave amplitude. At M
