Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appearing in print for the first time in 1558, the book that we now know as the Heptameron is the work of Marguerite, Queen of Navarre. Left incomplete, but dearly modeled on Boccaccio's Decameron, the Heptameron consists of a frame narrative and seventy-two tales told by five men and five women characters in the shady meadow at Notre Dame de Sarrance. As John D. Lyons and Mary B. McKinley contend in their introduction to this volume, the tales of the Heptameron portray the conflicts, ruptures, and upheavals that agitated early modern French society. They present a forum in which different elements of Renaissance and Reformation culture meet and, at times, collide. Contradictory suppositions about men and women are easily discerned behind almost all of the stories, and the discussions among the fictional storytellers represent attitudes both feminist and misogynist, masculinist, and misandrous. Less oppositional are the religious conflicts among the storytellers; some are less ardently religious while others are concerned with the corporeal rather than the spiritual. The stories of the Heptameron are often cautionary tales about the corruption of the late medieval church, about decadent priests and monks, or about the unfortunate faithful whose belief in the efficacy of good works for salvation leads to disaster and death. The conflicts of the Reformation loom over the Heptameron not just as the origin of its ideological tensions but also as a prominent symptom of the larger, related disruptions that marked sixteenth-century Europe. Provocative and wide-ranging, appealing to specialists in numerous fields, Critical Tales is the first collective volume of studies in English on the Heptameron. The authors—Robert D. Cottrell, Hope Glidden, Marcel Tetel, Donald Stone, Tom Conley, Michel Jeanneret, Cathleen M. Bauschatz, François Cornilliat and Ullrich Langer, Mary B. McKinley, Philippe de Lajarte, Andre Tournon, Daniel Russell, François Rigolot, Paula Sommers, and Edwin M. Duval—present different approaches to Marguerite de Navarre's tales, dealing with such topics as confession, rape, the impact of printing on knowledge and narrative, narrative theory, and androgyny. The contributors to Critical Tales, like the storytellers of the Heptameron, are not afraid to challenge the critical establishment and one another. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of French and comparative literature and women's studies.

Book Renaissance Resonance

Download or read book Renaissance Resonance written by Russell Ganim and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reversing the predominant critical interpretation of La Ceppède and the Théorèmes, this study claims that literary contexts and avatars act as a point of entry into devotion. The book reads La Ceppède from the inside out, asking principal question: How does the literary initiate an exploration of the theological? Focusing on the ways in which the Théorèmes transform literature into a potential instrument of salvation, the text looks at La Ceppède's adaptation of different Renaissance lyric types. Modulation of the formal and thematic traits of lyric subgenres such as the blason, the baiser, the pastoral and pastourelle, as well as the emblem allow La Ceppède to develop and exploit literature as a contemplative framework. The goals in taking this approach are to emphasize La Ceppède's originality in terms of representing the Christian body and spiritually erotic imagery. This methodology also highlights La Ceppède's use of lyric subgenre as a means of unifying the first and second volumes of the Théorèmes. In its final chapter, the book compares and contrasts La Ceppède's appropriation of lyric forms with that of other Renaissance poets such as Lazare de Selve, Jean de Sponde, and Marguerite de Navarre. The work concludes by arguing that the contribution of La Ceppède's text lies in the singularity of its narrative structure, its poetic mission, and its depiction of Christ's humanity. Literary structure becomes meditative structure, as lyric form becomes a vehicle toward redemption.

Book Mirroring Belief

Download or read book Mirroring Belief written by Gary Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering new readings of Marguerite de Navarre's verse works by situating them within their contemporary religious and literary context, this work reviews theological and mystical writings, but pays particular attention to the devotional writing which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and which is virtually unknown today. Four theological issues central to the Reformation are discussed: the nature of justification; the role of the Church and the sacraments; the problem of faith and works; and the question of the Bible and its interpretation. Examining the religious structures and language that inform de Navarre's poems and plays, Ferguson draws conclusions regarding the author's religious beliefs as they are mirrored in her poetry. This text should be of interest to students of French Renaissance literature.

Book A Companion to Marguerite de Navarre

Download or read book A Companion to Marguerite de Navarre written by Gary Ferguson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most widely read today as the author of the "Heptaméron," Marguerite de Navarre (1492-1549) was known in her lifetime as a deeply religious, mystical poet. Sister of the King of France and wife of the King of Navarre, her deeds and writings expressed and sought to promote a living faith in Christ, based on the gospels, and a vision for the renewal and reform of the Church in line with the teachings of French Evangelicals such as Lefèvre d’Étaples, Guillaume Briçonnet, and Gérard Roussel. In this volume, eleven eminent scholars offer new appreciations of Marguerite’s extraordinary life and rich and diverse literary œuvre, including, in addition to her short-story collection, dialogues, mirror poems, plays, songs, and an allegorical prison narrative. Contributors include, along with the editors, Philip Ford, Isabelle Garnier, Jean-Marie Le Gall, Reinier Leushuis, Jan Miernowski, Olivier Millet, Isabelle Pantin, Jonathan A. Reid, and Cynthia Skenazi.

Download or read book Blason Po tique written by Alison Saunders and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1981 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book - the first full-length study of the blason poétique examines the evolution of this French genre in the course of the sixteenth century, but also traces its earliest heraldic origins and indicates its subsequent development into the seventeenth century. The blason is treated in general but attention is concentrated particularly upon the anatomical blasons and contreblasons written by Clément Marot and his contemporaries in the 1530s and 1540s with a revaluation of their chronology in the light of hitherto «lost» editions, and an examination of the poems themselves and their debt both to the native French tradition and to Italian influences. Parallels are traced with contemporary illustrated verse, and the study attempts to demonstrate how - far from being an ephemeral eccentricity - the genre fits into the overall pattern of sixteenth-century French verse.
