Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Book in English for Coming Citizens Americanization has been defined as the "union of new with native-born Americans in fuller common understanding and appreciation to secure by means of individual and collective self-direction the highest welfare of all." This conception of the process of Americanization requires as a minimum that the native American engaged in the process be informed as to the immigrant's motives in coming to America, his attitudes toward his adopted land, his understanding of American institutions. Educators are agreed to-day that Americanization is a dual and reciprocal process, requiring the active participation of the foreign as well as of the native born. Ultimately, the immigrant must find himself in an American environment, must attach himself to American institutions, must contribute his gifts to their support and to their further development. As a means toward establishing such Americanizing contacts, the immigrant must at least be able to communicate with his English-speaking neighbor in the language of America, and to appreciate in an elementary way the things which Americans hold dear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civics for Coming Americans The purpose oi this booklet is to put within reach of the foreign-born having a fair command of the English language such information as is required to pass the examination for naturalization. Many patriots, sympathizing with Coming Americans, would willingly give them a helping hand if they knew how to do so intelligently. They neither know what the applicant for naturalization needs nor are they familiar with the laws regulating the process. My effort is to give these men a guide, should they be disposed to help a group of aliens preparing for the examination in naturalization. Book Citizenship in Philadelphia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Citizenship in Philadelphia Classic Reprint written by J. Lynn Barnard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizenship in Philadelphia There is visible everywhere in the United States an increasing interest in public welfare and in city govern ment which has so much to do with securing it. The usual text-book in civics naturally gives fuller treatment of the national government, which is uniform for the whole country, than of state and city, which are every where different. And even special texts in municipal government can give only a general survey of the field. Each city needs a book of its own. Moreover, the belief IS growing that the formal teach-r ing of the structure and legal powers of government has had its day in our schools. In its place is coming the instruction which concerns itself chiefly with the func tions of government; with what is done, and why; with the ways in which we all may help, individually. And in organized groups. There is need, accordingly, for books which emphasize the elements of public welfare. As a part of this new order of things there is coming a realization of the simple but important truth that the primary object of civic teaching is, after all, to make good citizens. It has well been said that good citizen ship - the sort that is good for something - means effi cient service in the community, be that community the city, the state, or the nation. There is need for books which give the sort of practical information about com munity activities that awakens live interest and stimulates to good citizenship. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Year of the Work of the Public Schools With the Bureau of Naturalization We are making a mistake unless we also use our efforts to have our foreign-speala'ng peoples enter into the very life work of our municipalities and of our States and of our country. Foreign settlements usually mean the combination of a few people from a certain country forming a colony in a certain district of that other country and have really no purpose other than sociability and a better understanding and a ready yielding to the constituted authority of the country. In the United States they mean entirely something else. Here we have a great mass of peoples coming from the shores of every country on the face of the globe, who form colonies in_ every city and town of these United States, colonies of the peoples of their respective countries - hotbeds of dis integration and disloyalty. I hold it to be the duty of every agency of government and civic bodies and the individual citizens to help in the movement that shall merge the people coming here from every clime into one great whole, the people, the Citizen ship of the United States of America. Book A Secret Gift

Download or read book A Secret Gift written by Ted Gup and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring account of America at its worst-and Americans at their best-woven from the stories of Depression-era families who were helped by gifts from the author's generous and secretive grandfather. Shortly before Christmas 1933 in Depression-scarred Canton, Ohio, a small newspaper ad offered $10, no strings attached, to 75 families in distress. Interested readers were asked to submit letters describing their hardships to a benefactor calling himself Mr. B. Virdot. The author's grandfather Sam Stone was inspired to place this ad and assist his fellow Cantonians as they prepared for the cruelest Christmas most of them would ever witness. Moved by the tales of suffering and expressions of hope contained in the letters, which he discovered in a suitcase 75 years later, Ted Gup initially set out to unveil the lives behind them, searching for records and relatives all over the country who could help him flesh out the family sagas hinted at in those letters. From these sources, Gup has re-created the impact that Mr B. Virdot's gift had on each family. Many people yearned for bread, coal, or other necessities, but many others received money from B. Virdot for more fanciful items-a toy horse, say, or a set of encyclopedias. As Gup's investigations revealed, all these things had the power to turn people's lives around- even to save them. But as he uncovered the suffering and triumphs of dozens of strangers, Gup also learned that Sam Stone was far more complex than the lovable- retiree persona he'd always shown his grandson. Gup unearths deeply buried details about Sam's life-from his impoverished, abusive upbringing to felonious efforts to hide his immigrant origins from U.S. officials-that help explain why he felt such a strong affinity to strangers in need. Drawing on his unique find and his award-winning reportorial gifts, Ted Gup solves a singular family mystery even while he pulls away the veil of eight decades that separate us from the hardships that united America during the Depression. In A Secret Gift, he weaves these revelations seamlessly into a tapestry of Depression-era America, which will fascinate and inspire in equal measure. Watch a Video

Book excerpt: "In the 1960s, a nation that had prided itself on its political stability found its political system no longer equal to meeting the demands for change. A people who had taken for granted a collective commitment to public order was suddenly stunned by the fragility of its institutions and the assaults upon the values they represented. This is the story of how Americans for the first time took to the streets by the thousands, sometimes by the tens of thousands, to resolve disputes once left to the established governmental process. Fire in the Streets is the dramatic account of the sequence of events, the range of ideas, the diversity of personalities and the nature of the explosive confrontations which made up the richness and complexity of the period. And it is about how political change effectuated during the decade has remained permanent"--Book jacket.
