Book Seawall Design

Download or read book Seawall Design written by R. S. Thomas and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seawall Design focuses on all aspects of seawall design, from the broader issues of coastal management and other options for coastal defense and environmental assessment, to problem definition and project planning; data collection and interpretation; conceptual and detailed design; design for construction and maintenance; and materials to be used. The reader is guided with respect to the range of potential problems, their definition, and possible solutions, as well as the key functional requirements of a seawall and the methods of design to take due account of engineering and environmental and economic considerations. Comprised of eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the principal function of a seawall and the guidelines for seawall design covering all relevant considerations including environmental aspects, construction, and long-term management. The discussion then turns to regular monitoring of coastal management, options for coastal defense, and the impact of phased works on coastal management. Subsequent chapters deal with project planning and environmental aspects of seawall design; data collection, analysis, and interpretation; and overall concept and types of seawall structure;. Design considerations for a seawall are described, starting with hydraulic performance, the overall stability of the embankment and coastal cliffs as well as structural loads. The book concludes with an assessment of financial and economic considerations in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of seawalls. This monograph is intended for engineers involved in the planning and design of seawalls.

This book was released on 2000-07-12 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Random waves are the most important constituent of the sea environment. They make the design of maritime structures quite different from that of structures on land. In this book, the concept of randomness in waves for the design of breakwaters, seawalls, and harbor structures is fully explored for easy comprehension by practicing engineers.Theoretical aspects are also discussed in detail for further studies by graduate students and researchers. Several additions have been made to this second edition, including a new chapter on extreme wave statistics.

Book Quay Walls Second Edition

Download or read book Quay Walls Second Edition written by J.G. de Gijt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the handbook of Quay Walls provides the reader with essential knowledge for the planning, design, execution and maintenance of quay walls, as well as general information about historical developments and lessons learned from the observation of ports in various countries. Technical chapters are followed by a detailed calculation of a quay wall based on a semi-probabilistic design procedure, which applies the theory presented earlier. Since the publication of the Dutch edition in 2003 and the English version in 2005, considerable new experience has been obtained by the many practitioners using the book, prompting the update of this handbook. Moreover, the introduction of the Eurocodes in 2012 has prompted a complete revision of the Design chapter, which is now compliant with the Eurocodes. Furthermore, additional recommendations for using FEM-analysis in quay wall design have been included. In response to ongoing discussions within the industry about buckling criteria for steel pipe piles, a thorough research project was carried out on steel pipe piles fi lled with sand and on piles without sand. The results of this research programme have also been incorporated in this new version. Finally, the section on corrosion has been updated to refl ect the latest knowledge and attention has been given to the latest global developments in quay wall engineering. The new edition was made possible thanks to the contributions of numerous experts from the Netherlands and Belgium.

Book Engineering and Design Design of Coastal Revetments Seawalls and Bulkheads

Download or read book Engineering and Design Design of Coastal Revetments Seawalls and Bulkheads written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual provides guidance for the design of coastal revetment, seawalls, and bulkheads. This manual applies to HQUSACE elements, major subordinate commands (MSC), districts, laboratories, and field operating activities (FOA) having civil works responsibilities. In areas subject to wind-driven waves and surge, structures such as revetments, seawalls, and bulkheads are commonly employed either to combat erosion or to maintain development at an advanced position from the natural shoreline. Proper performance of such structures is predicated on close adherence to established design guidance. This manual presents important design considerations and describes commonly available materials and structural components. All applicable design guidance must be applied to avoid poor performance or failure. Study of all available structural materials can lead, under some conditions, to innovative designs at significant cost savings for civil works projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saved at the Seawall is the definitive history of the largest ever waterborne evacuation. Jessica DuLong reveals the dramatic story of how the New York Harbor maritime community heroically delivered stranded commuters, residents, and visitors out of harm's way. Even before the US Coast Guard called for "all available boats," tugs, ferries, dinner boats, and other vessels had sped to the rescue from points all across New York Harbor. In less than nine hours, captains and crews transported nearly half a million people from Manhattan. Anchored in eyewitness accounts and written by a mariner who served at Ground Zero, Saved at the Seawall weaves together the personal stories of people rescued that day with those of the mariners who saved them. DuLong describes the inner workings of New York Harbor and reveals the collaborative power of its close-knit community. Her chronicle of those crucial hours, when hundreds of thousands of lives were at risk, highlights how resourcefulness and basic human goodness triumphed over turmoil on one of America's darkest days. Initially published as Dust to Deliverance, this edition, released in time for the twentieth anniversary, contains new updates: a preface by DuLong and a foreword by Mitchell Zuckoff.

Book excerpt: Well-designed infrastructure brings social value that far exceeds its initial construction expenditure, but competition for scarce government funds and a general public perception of infrastructure as mere efficiency, has often left design ill-considered. This book provides designers with the tools needed to argue for the value of design: the ‘design capital’ as the authors term it. In naming and defining design capital, design can once again become part of the discussion and realization of every infrastructure project. Design Capital offers strategies and tools for justifying public spending on design considerations in infrastructure projects. Design has the ability to make infrastructure resonate with cultural or social value, as seen in the case studies, which bestows infrastructure with the potential to accrue design capital. Support for this proposition is drawn from various methodologies of economic valuation and Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, explanation of design methodology and education and a series of historical and contemporary case studies. The book also addresses some of the more controversial outcomes associated with contemporary infrastructure: gentrification, globalization and consumer tourism. With this book, designers can make a stronger case for the value of design in public infrastructure.
