Book Quantifying the Qualitative

Download or read book Quantifying the Qualitative written by Katya Drozdova and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantifying the Qualitative by Katya Drozdova and Kurt Taylor Gaubatz presents a systematic approach to comparative case analysis based on insights from information theory. This new method, which requires minimal quantitative skills, helps students, policymakers, professionals, and scholars learn more from comparative cases. The approach avoids the limitations of traditional statistics in the small-n context and allows analysts to systematically assess and compare the impact of a set of factors on case outcomes with easy-to-use analytics. Rigorous tools reduce bias, improve the knowledge gained from case studies, and provide straightforward metrics for effectively communicating results to a range of readers and leaders.

Its application spans a broad field of technologies used in contemporary molecular biology. In this volume, the authors present a collection of cases to apply Bioconductor tools in the analysis of microarray gene expression data. Topics covered include: (1) import and preprocessing of data from various sources; (2) statistical modeling of differential gene expression; (3) biological metadata; (4) application of graphs and graph rendering; (5) machine learning for clustering and classification problems; (6) gene set enrichment analysis. Each chapter of this book describes an analysis of real data using hands-on example driven approaches. Short exercises help in the learning process and invite more advanced considerations of key topics. The book is a dynamic document. All the code shown can be executed on a local computer, and readers are able to reproduce every computation, figure, and table.

Book Case Studies in Suburban Sustainability

Download or read book Case Studies in Suburban Sustainability written by Sandra J. Garren and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choice Outstanding Academic Title The first volume to focus on suburbs and sustainability in the United States, this collection approaches the topic through regionally diverse case studies. Departing from the more widely examined issue of urban sustainability, contributors argue that the suburbs present a unique and important challenge given their greater land mass, lower population density, lower tax rates, and more limited government services. The studies featured in this volume analyze the impact of planning, social and economic concerns, environmental factors such as air pollution and climate change, and water management on suburban communities. Areas of focus include suburbs of New York City, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Phoenix, New Orleans, and Tampa. In these examples, contributors show that activism and leadership are currently advancing a strong sustainability agenda in regions many would have believed unlikely. Through these case studies, this volume demonstrates that the suburbs are a crucial nexus for sustainability in the United States. Because suburbs have been overlooked in most green initiatives, and because they play such a vital role in the future of American housing and development, these essays call for more research and continued creative innovation in these areas. Book Case Studies in Fisheries Conservation and Management

Download or read book Case Studies in Fisheries Conservation and Management written by Brian R. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Through more than 30 original case studies related to contemporary conservation and management issues in fisheries, this new book challenges student to develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that will serve them as future natural resource professionals. Intended to encourage students to go beyond the 'information' level of many science texts, these case studies have no 'right answers'. Many of the cases are presented in a dilemma format, where students are asked to assess information from a variety of sources, find additional information as needed, and propose and evaluate alternative solutions. Cases are approached from a variety of dimensions (biological, ecological, political, cultural, and socioeconomic) and stakeholder perspectives. Spiral binding allows the book to lie flat for easy reference during classroom discussions and activities."--Publisher's description.

Book The Neoliberal City

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jason Hackworth
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2014-01-15
  • ISBN : 0801470048
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book The Neoliberal City written by Jason Hackworth and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shift in the ideological winds toward a "free-market" economy has brought profound effects in urban areas. The Neoliberal City presents an overview of the effect of these changes on today's cities. The term "neoliberalism" was originally used in reference to a set of practices that first-world institutions like the IMF and World Bank impose on third-world countries and cities. The support of unimpeded trade and individual freedoms and the discouragement of state regulation and social spending are the putative centerpieces of this vision. More and more, though, people have come to recognize that first-world cities are undergoing the same processes. In The Neoliberal City, Jason Hackworth argues that neoliberal policies are in fact having a profound effect on the nature and direction of urbanization in the United States and other wealthy countries, and that much can be learned from studying its effect. He explores the impact that neoliberalism has had on three aspects of urbanization in the United States: governance, urban form, and social movements. The American inner city is seen as a crucial battle zone for the wider neoliberal transition primarily because it embodies neoliberalism's antithesis, Keynesian egalitarian liberalism. Focusing on issues such as gentrification in New York City; public-housing policy in New York, Chicago, and Seattle; downtown redevelopment in Phoenix; and urban-landscape change in New Brunswick, N.J., Hackworth shows us how material and symbolic changes to institutions, neighborhoods, and entire urban regions can be traced in part to the rise of neoliberalism.

Book Handbook of Research on Creative Cities and Advanced Models for Knowledge Based Urban Development

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Creative Cities and Advanced Models for Knowledge Based Urban Development written by Galaby, Aly Abdel Razek and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussing global society entails discussing the predominant characteristics of knowledge-based activities in all walks of life. Its main characteristics are based on creativity, innovation, freedom, and networking. The emergence of such a society poses several challenges to all disciplines of social sciences. Within such a context, sociologists must have practical encounters to the theoretical, methodological, and empirical challenges imposed within contemporary global society. In this vein, studying creative cities from an interdisciplinary perspective helps provide critical readings of the phenomenon and the different levels of the concept in reality. The Handbook of Research on Creative Cities and Advanced Models for Knowledge-Based Urban Development provides global models and best practices of creative cities worldwide and illustrates different theoretical blueprints for the better understanding of contemporary global society. While defining key concepts of creative cities, global society, and creative class, the book also clarifies the main differences between hubs, parks, and precincts and their contributions to knowledge-based development. Covering topics that include knowledge economy, social inclusion, and urban mobility, this comprehensive reference is ideal for sociologists, urban planners/designers, political scientists, economists, anthropologists, historians, policymakers, researchers, academicians, and students.
