Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our current understanding of the fundamental building blocks of the Universe, summarised by the Standard Model of particle physics, is incomplete. For example, it fails to explain why we do not see equal, or almost equal, numbers of particles and their antiparticle partners. To explain this asymmetry requires, among other effects, a mechanism known as charge-parity (CP) violation that causes differences between the rates at which particles and antiparticles decay. CP violation is seen in systems containing bottom and strange quarks, but not in those with up, charm or top quarks. This thesis describes searches for particle-antiparticle asymmetries in the decay rates of charmed mesons. No evidence of CP violation is found. With current sensitivities, an asymmetry large enough to observe probably could not be explained by the Standard Model. Instead an explanation could come from new physics, for example contributions from supersymmetric or other undiscovered heavy particles. In the thesis, the development of new techniques to search for these asymmetries is described. They are applied to data from the LHCb experiment at CERN to make precise measurements of asymmetries in the D^+->K^-K^+pi^+ decay channel. This is the most promising charged D decay for CP violation searches.

Book excerpt: The phenomenology of the violation of the CP symmetry by the fundamental interactions is a fascinating subject which, even after decades of dedicated theoretical and experimental research, is far to be fully understood. While investigations of the K and B systems have and will continue to play a central role in this field of research, in depth examinations of the D mesons sector have yet to be performed with enough precision, leaving a gap in our knowledge. This book describes a search for CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed neutral D decays to two charged pions or kaons performed using the proton-antiproton collisions recorded at the Fermilab's TeVatron collider by the CDF experiment during February 2002 and January 2010. The result is the current most accurate determination of CP-violating asymmetries in these decays and represents a pioneering measurement of high precision CP violation in the charm sector at hadron colliders that has been of inspiration for the similar studies which are now ongoing at the CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

Book excerpt: Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment, they have searched for T violation in charm meson decays using the four-body decay channels D° → K−K+ ?−?+, D+ → K{sub S}°K+?−?+, and D{sub s}+ → K{sub S}°K+?−?+. The T violation asymmetry is obtained using triple-product correlations and assuming the validity of the CPT theorem. They find the asymmetry values to be A{sub T{sub viol}}(D°) = 0.010 ± 0.057(stat.) ± 0.037(syst.), A{sub T{sub viol}}(D+) = 0.023 ± 0.062(stat.) ± 0.022(syst.), and A{sub T{sub viol}}(D{sub s}+) = -0.036 ± 0.067(stat.) ± 0.023(syst.). Each measurement is consistent with no T violation. New measurements of the CP asymmetries for some of these decay modes are also presented.

Book excerpt: I report on a measurement of \CP-violating asymmetries ($A_{\Gamma}$) between effective lifetimes of $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^0$ in fully reconstructed $D^0\to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0\to \pi^+\pi^-$ decays collected in $p\bar{p}$ collisions by the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment. The full CDF data set corresponding to $9.7$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity is used. The flavor of the charm meson at production is determined by exploiting the strong-interaction decay $D^{*+} \to D^0 \pi^+$, while the contamination from mesons originated in $b$-hadron decays is evaluated and subtracted from the sample. Signal yields as functions of the observed decay-time distributions are extracted from maximum likelihood fits and used to measure the asymmetries. The results, $A_\Gamma (K^+K^- ) = \bigl( -1.9 \pm 1.5 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.4 \mathrm{(syst)} \bigr)\times10^{-3}$ and $A_\Gamma (\pi^+\pi^- )= \bigl( -0.1 \pm 1.8 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.3 \mathrm{(syst)} \bigr)\times10^{-3}$, and their combination, $A_\Gamma = \bigl( -1.2 \pm 1.2\bigr)\times10^{-3}$, are consistent with the SM predictions and other experimental determinations.
