Book Search for the H dibaryon at the Brookhaven 2 GeV c Kaon Beam Line

Download or read book Search for the H dibaryon at the Brookhaven 2 GeV c Kaon Beam Line written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this talk I will summarize the motivation for H-dibaryon searches and describe efforts at Brookhaven to find this particle. The most recently run experiment, using a new 2 GeV/c kaon beam line, has looked for the H in the at-rest formation reaction (?− + d){sub atom} {r arrow} H + n, where the monoenergetic neutron was detected. This experiment is sensitive to an H in the range near the?? mass, a region largely unconstrained by other measurements. Data analysis is in progress, so no results are available yet. A second search technique using a 3He target is also described.

Book The Search for the H Dibaryon with the BNL 2 0 GeV

Download or read book The Search for the H Dibaryon with the BNL 2 0 GeV written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status is given for two experiments being carried out to search for evidence of the H dibaryon. BNL experiments E813 and E836 will use the new 2 GeV/c kaon beam line. The former has recently begun data taking. They cover complementary regions of mass-sensitivity and promise to provide sensitive tests of the existence of the H. 12 refs.

Book H Particle Searches at Brookhaven

Download or read book H Particle Searches at Brookhaven written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the suggestion by R.L. Jaffe twenty years ago, researchers have been trying to establish the existence of a six-quark object, termed the H dibaryon, predicted by the phenomenological quark bag model. This object quickly became the focus of experimental searches at several locations, including the AGS. This search still continues, with perhaps the most active program being carried out at the 2.0 GeV/c beam line at the BNL-AGS. The research was considerably enhanced by the writing of two notable papers at BNL by Aerts and Dover, which gave quantitative predictions for H-production cross sections in two very different reaction mechanisms. One of these, the formation of cascade atomic deuterium to form the H by fusion, had been first suggested by P.D. Barnes. The 2.0 GeV/c line at the AGS was specifically designed to provide an adequate kaon flux for double strangeness and charge exchange reactions. It has been used for two H searches, E813 and E836, as well as for several[Lambda][Lambda] searches, E885 and E906. These four experiments are setting significant limits on H-production. The results of these experiments are discussed, and descriptions of related H searches at Brookhaven are given.

Book Future Dibaryon Research at BNL

Download or read book Future Dibaryon Research at BNL written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment designed to search for a strangeness -1 dibaryon is discussed. The experiment will use the 3He(K−, .pi.)nD/sub s/ reaction and is expected to begin near the end of the year at the BNL AGS using the existing LESB-I beamline and hypernuclear spectrometer system. Planned searches for a strangeness -2 dibaryon are also discussed. The strangeness -2 dibaryon searches will however require the construction of a new 1.8 GeV/c kaon beam line at the AGS.

Book Search for the H Dibaryon S

Download or read book Search for the H Dibaryon S written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The observed hadrons are understood as bound states of three quarks (baryons) or of quarks and antiquarks (mesons). To date no six quark bound state other than the loosely bound deuteron has been observed. Quantum Chromodynamics permits other color-singlet bound states of quarks, and a number of phenomenological models extended from the baryon (q3) and meson (q{bar q}) sectors predict bound six quark states (q6). The most probable candidate is the H dibaryon, composed of two each of the lightest three quarks (udsuds), with quantum numbers J{sup P} = 0, I = 0 and S = -2. Its mass would likely be between the deuteron mass and twice the [Lambda] (uds) mass. This dissertation describes a search for the H dibaryon conducted in a neutral beam at the Brookhaven National Laboratory's Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. In the experiment a 24.1 GeV/c proton beam struck a 1.35 interaction length platinum target producing a collimated neutral beam (62 [mu]sr at 65 mrad from the incident proton direction) which propagated through a 18 m vacuum decay tank before entering a double arm spectrometer. Approximately 20 m from the production target a 10 cm (0.15 interaction length) long active scintillator dissociator was placed in the beam.

Book Strangeness and Spin in Fundamental Physics

Download or read book Strangeness and Spin in Fundamental Physics written by M. Anselmino and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2008-07-14 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strangeness and Spin in Fundamental Physics is dedicated to the discussion of the role played by two subtle and somehow puzzling quantum numbers, the strangeness and the spin, in fundamental physics. They both relate to basic properties of the fundamental quantum field theories describing strong and electro-weak interactions and to their phenomenological applications. In some instances, like the partonic spin structure of the proton, they are deeply correlated. The many puzzling results recently obtained by measuring several spin asymmetries have stimulated gigantic progresses in the study of the spin structure of protons and neutrons. Intense theoretical activity has discovered new features of non-perturbative QCD, like strong correlations between the spin and the intrinsic motions of quarks inside the nucleons. The purpose of this publication is that of providing a complete, updated and critical account of the most recent and relevant discoveries in the above fields, both from the experimental and theoretical sides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference Mesons and Light Nuclei, organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP), Rez, was held during July 2 - 7, 1995 in small north Bohemian town Straz pod Ralskem. It was the sixth in a series of meetings which took place previously at Liblice 74 and 81, Bechyne 85 and 88, and Prague 91. The conferences gained already their firm position among intermediate energy nuclear physics activities. International nuclear physics community strongly supported our intention to continue the series. This year's venue for the conference was the accommodation and social area of the DIAMO company at Straz. The goal of the meeting was to summarize the present situation and the future perspectives concerning the experimental investigations and theoreti cal descriptions of light nuclei and their interactions with electromagnetic and hadronic probes, mainly at intermediate energies. The scientific program of the conference included the following areas of research: nuclear physics with pions and antiprotons, T)-meson physics, baryonic systems with strangeness, relativis tic few-body dynamics, and electroweak nuclear interaction. Representatives from many international groups working within different experimental facili ties and with different theoretical methods were invited and asked to present their latest results and future research programs. The Straz conference, attended by 102 physicist from institutions in 22 countries, was sponsored by the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research, Czech Ministry for Industry and Trade, and by SKODA PRAHA a.s. Thanks to this sponsorship we could also invite several participants and students at essentially reduced cost.
