Book Transient Searches with the Hawc Gamma ray Observatory

Download or read book Transient Searches with the Hawc Gamma ray Observatory written by Alison Peisker and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The universe contains many extremely energetic astrophysical sources that emit particles on timescales from fractions of a second to thousands of years. Studying these sources through gamma-ray and multi-messenger astronomy may help to reveal the answers to several remaining fundamental questions in physics. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory, an extensive air shower array, is well-suited to perform transient searches due to its large field of view and high duty cycle. In this work, a catalog search of all very-high-energy gamma-ray sources in HAWC's field of view is conducted, revealing a total of 65 sources. Then a search for evaporating primordial black holes is performed. None are detected, so upper limits are set on their burst rate density. Finally, the IceCube neutrino observatory is introduced in order to perform a multi-messenger search for flaring gamma rays and neutrinos originating from the same point in the sky. None are detected, so upper limits are placed on the rate density and total energy of sources that produce both gamma rays and neutrinos. Performing these searches contributes to the understanding of the origins of cosmic rays and how astrophysical sources accelerate their particles to the high energies that are observed on Earth.

Book Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics V

Download or read book Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics V written by Thomas Ferbel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held again at the Hotel on the Cay, in the scenic harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. The ASI brought together a total of 71 participants, from 17 different countries. It was another great success, due to the dedication of the inspiring lecturers, the exceptional study body, and, of course, the beautiful setting. The primary support for the meeting was again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing nations. As in the ca se of the previous ASI's, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures should complement the material published in the first four ASI's, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists.

Book The Nature of Unidentified Galactic High Energy Gamma Ray Sources

Download or read book The Nature of Unidentified Galactic High Energy Gamma Ray Sources written by Alberto Carramiñana and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instru ment on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory left as a legacy its Third Catalog of High Energy Gamma-Ray Sources, whose detections include a large number of blazars, some pulsars, the Large Magellanic Cloud and a solar flare. Most of the newly discovered objects - a majority of the catalog -are unidentified sources, with a clearly predominant Galactic population. Are all these radio-quiet pulsars, like Geminga, or is there a novel type of celestial object, awaiting identification? In spite of the limited angular resolution provided by EGRET and COMPTEL, there is still much to learn about unidentified ,-ray sources: correlation studies, multiwavelength observations and theoretical work can provide valuable clues, specially if these efforts are carried out in a coordinated manner. The aim of this workshop, held from October 9 to 11, 2000, at the Instituto N acional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica, at Tonantzintla, Mexico, was to gather experts on the subject, including observational as tronomers specialized in other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, in an effort to address the question of the Nature of Galactic high-energy gamma-ray sources, both from the theoretical and observational perspec tive, and elaborate schemes for future identification studies which can make use of existing and forthcoming facilities.
