Book Search for Charged Higgs Bosons Decaying Via H in Fully Hadronic Final States with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC

Download or read book Search for Charged Higgs Bosons Decaying Via H in Fully Hadronic Final States with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC written by Anna Kopp and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: Searches for charged Higgs bosons decaying to a tau lepton and a neutrino in fully hadronic final states are presented in this thesis. The analyses are based on 4.6fb^-1 and 19.5fb^-1 of proton-proton collision data taken with the ATLAS detector at the LHC at center-of-mass energies of 7TeV and 8TeV in 2011 and 2012, respectively.Charged Higgs bosons with masses less than the top quark mass are searched for in events consistent with top-quark pair production and charged Higgs bosons with masses greater than the top quark mass are searched for in associated production with a top quark. In the search based on data taken in 2011, all background contributions are estimated in data-driven ways. Only a minor background contribution is estimated using simulation in the searches based on data taken in 2012; all dominant background contributions are estimated using data-driven methods here as well. An embedding method is used in all searches to assess the dominant and irreducible background contributions containing true hadronically decaying tau leptons and described in detail in this thesis. No significant excess of the data compared to the background expectations due to Standard Model processes is observed. Statistical analyses lead to 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching ratios B(t->bH^±)xB(H^±->tau^± nu) between 0.23% and 1.3% for charged Higgs boson masses between 80GeV and 160GeV and on the production cross section times branching ratio, sigma(pp->tH^±+X)xB(H^±->tau^± nu) ranging from 0.76pb to 4.5fb for charged Higgs boson masses between 180GeV and 1000GeV. The branching ratio and cross section limits are used to derive constraints on the parameter space of minimal supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model in various benchmark scenarios. These limits are the so far strictest limits set by the ATLAS collaboration in the search for charged Higgs bosons in fully hadronic final states

This book was released on 2016 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, charged Higgs bosons produced in association with a single top quark and decaying via H±→?? are searched for with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, using proton–proton collision data at √s=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb-1. The final state is characterised by the presence of a hadronic ? decay and missing transverse momentum, as well as a hadronically decaying top quark, resulting in the absence of high-transverse-momentum electrons and muons. The data are found to be consistent with the expected background from Standard Model processes. A statistical analysis leads to 95% confidence-level upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction, ?(pp→[b]tH±)×BR(H±→??) , between 1.9 pb and 15 fb, for charged Higgs boson masses ranging from 200 to 2000 GeV. Finally, the exclusion limits for this search surpass those obtained with the proton–proton collision data recorded at √s=8 TeV.

Book Theoretical Studies on Extended Higgs Sectors Towards Future Precision Measurements

Download or read book Theoretical Studies on Extended Higgs Sectors Towards Future Precision Measurements written by Masashi Aiko and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-20 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the physics of the discovered Higgs boson and additional Higgs bosons in the extended Higgs models which includes higher-order quantum corrections. While the 125 GeV Higgs boson was discovered, the structure of the Higgs sector is still a mystery. Since the Higgs sector determines the concrete realization of the Higgs mechanism, the study of its nature is one of the central interests in current and future high-energy physics. The book begins with a review of the standard model and the two-Higgs doublet model, which is one of the representatives of the extended Higgs models. Subsequently, we discuss the studies of the two-Higgs doublet model at the lowest order of perturbation. Following the lowest-order analysis, we study the higher-order electroweak corrections in Higgs physics. After reviewing the renormalization procedure and the higher-order corrections in the decays of the discovered Higgs boson, we discuss the higher-order corrections in the Higgs strahlung process from an electron-positron collision, the decays of the additional charged and CP-odd Higgs bosons in the two-Higgs doublet model. From the series of these studies, it is found that the nature of the Higgs sector can be widely investigated by future collider experiments.

Book A Search for Exotic Higgs Decays

Download or read book A Search for Exotic Higgs Decays written by Jackson Burzynski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absence of new physics at the TeV scale observed thus far at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) motivates an increasing focus on searches for weakly-coupled new particles and exotic signatures. In particular, particles with macroscopic mean proper lifetimes, known as long-lived particles (LLPs), are of significant interest due to their ability to elude the majority of searches which rely on the assumption that Beyond Standard Model particles decay close to the primary interaction point. Many models which aim to solve various issues with the Standard Model (SM) introduce new particles with lifetimes that are either unconstrained, or even shown to prefer the macroscopic regime. These theories often point to the Higgs boson as a possible portal to new physics, with exotic Higgs decays being the primary phenomenological consequence and means of discovery. It is well motivated both from theory and experimental constraints to consider the scenario in which the particles produced in these exotic decays have macroscopic proper lifetimes and give rise to unique detector signatures. This work describes a search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to two long-lived, neutral, spin-0 particles which subsequently decay to pairs of b quarks, giving the striking signature of displaced hadronic jets in the ATLAS inner detector. Several other ATLAS searches have probed this decay topology previously, excluding branching ratios of the Higgs boson to LLPs of more than 10% for proper lifetimes greater than 100mm. These searches relied on dedicated triggers designed to select events with LLPs decaying in the ATLAS calorimeter or muon spectrometer. The lack of an equivalent trigger for LLP decays in the ATLAS inner detector has been a limiting factor in probing LLP lifetimes less than 100mm. To circumvent the difficulty of triggering on LLP decays, the search presented in this thesis exploits the ZH associated production mode, relying on leptonic trigger signatures to select interesting events. This is the first search for Higgs boson decays into LLPs to exploit this analysis methodology and additionally makes use of several novel methods for both background rejection and background estimation. No excess over Standard Model predictions is observed, and upper limits are set on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to LLPs . Depending on the mass of the LLP, branching ratios greater than 10% are excluded for lifetimes as small as 4mm and as large as 100mm, probing an important gap in the ATLAS exotic Higgs decay programme. In comparison to the previous searches for Higgs decays to LLPs, these are among the most stringent limits placed on this scenario, and for LLPs with masses below 40 GeV these results represent the strongest existing constraints on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to LLPs in this lifetime regime.

Book Search for a Charged Higgs Boson Produced in the Vector boson Fusion Mode with Decay H u2192 W Z Using pp Collisions at u221A s

Download or read book Search for a Charged Higgs Boson Produced in the Vector boson Fusion Mode with Decay H u2192 W Z Using pp Collisions at u221A s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for a charged Higgs boson, H±, decaying to a W± boson and a Z boson is presented. The search is based on 20.3 fb–1 of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The H± boson is assumed to be produced via vector-boson fusion and the decays W± → qq¯' and Z → e+e–/?+?– are considered. The search is performed in a range of charged Higgs boson masses from 200 to 1000 GeV. No evidence for the production of an H± boson is observed. Upper limits of 31–1020 fb at 95% C.L. are placed on the cross section for vector-boson fusion production of an H± boson times its branching fraction to W±Z. The limits are compared with predictions from the Georgi-Machacek Higgs triplet model.

Book Theory And Phenomenology Of Sparticles An Account Of Four dimensional N 1 Supersymmetry In High Energy Physics

Download or read book Theory And Phenomenology Of Sparticles An Account Of Four dimensional N 1 Supersymmetry In High Energy Physics written by Manuel Drees and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-01-18 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersymmetry or SUSY, one of the most beautiful recent ideas of physics, predicts sparticles existing as superpartners of particles. This book gives a theoretical and phenomenological account of sparticles. Starting from a basic level, it provides a comprehensive, pedagogical and user-friendly treatment of the subject of four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry as well as its observational aspects in high energy physics and cosmology. Part One of the book introduces the requisite formal theory, preceded by a discussion of the naturalness problem. Part Two describes the supersymmetrization of the Standard Model of particle interactions as well as the origin of soft supersymmetry breaking and how it can be mediated from higher energies. Search strategies for sparticles, supersymmetric Higgs bosons, nonminimal scenarios and cosmological implications are some of the other topics covered. Novel features of the book include a dictionary between two-component and four-component spinor notation, a step-by-step derivation of the nonrenormalization theorem, an extended discussion of supersymmetric renormalization group evolution, detailed analyses of minimal and nonminimal models with gravity (including anomaly) mediated and gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking as well as elaborate self-contained presentations of collider signals of sparticles plus supersymmetric Higgs bosons and of supersymmetric cosmology. Appendices list all Feynman rules for the vertices of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Book Search for New Physics in Mono jet Final States in pp Collisions

Download or read book Search for New Physics in Mono jet Final States in pp Collisions written by Giuliano Gustavino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis provides a detailed and comprehensive description of the search for New Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the mono-jet final state, using the first 3.2 fb-1 of data collected at the centre of mass energy of colliding protons of 13~TeV recorded in the ATLAS experiment at LHC. The results are interpreted as limits in different theoretical contexts such as compressed supersymmetric models, theories that foresee extra-spatial dimensions and in the dark matter scenario. In the latter the limits are then compared with those obtained by other ATLAS analyses and by experiments based on completely different experimental techniques, highlighting the role of the mono-jet results in the context of dark matter searches.Lastly, a set of possible analysis improvements are proposed to reduce the main uncertainties that affect the signal region and to increase the discovery potential by further exploiting the information on the final state.

Book Discovery and Measurement of the Higgs Boson in the WW Decay Channel

Download or read book Discovery and Measurement of the Higgs Boson in the WW Decay Channel written by David Hall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the stand-alone discovery and measurement of the Higgs boson in its decays to two W bosons using the Run-I ATLAS dataset. This is the most precise measurement of gluon-fusion Higgs boson production and is among the most significant results attained at the LHC. The thesis provides an exceptionally clear exposition on a complicated analysis performed by a large team of researchers. Aspects of the analysis performed by the author are explained in detail; these include new methods for evaluating uncertainties on the jet binning used in the analysis and for estimating the background due to associated production of a W boson and an off-shell photon. The thesis also describes a measurement of the WW cross section, an essential background to Higgs boson production. The primary motivation of the LHC was to prove or disprove the existence of the Higgs boson. In 2012, CERN announced this discovery and the resultant ATLAS publication contained three decay channels: gg, ZZ, and WW.

Book Search for a Massive Resonance Decaying Into a Higgs Boson and a W Or Z Boson in Hadronic Final States in Proton proton Collisions at u221A s

Download or read book Search for a Massive Resonance Decaying Into a Higgs Boson and a W Or Z Boson in Hadronic Final States in Proton proton Collisions at u221A s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for a massive resonance decaying into a standard-model-like Higgs boson (H) and a W or Z boson is reported. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb–1, collected in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. Signal events, in which the decay products of Higgs, W, or Z bosons at high Lorentz boost are contained within single reconstructed jets, are identified using jet substructure techniques, including the tagging of b hadrons. This is the first search for heavy resonances decaying in HW or HZ resulting in an all-jet final state, as well as the first application of jet substructure techniques to identify H → WW* → 4q decays at high Lorentz boost. Furthermore, no significant signal is observed and limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross section of W' and Z' in a model with mass-degenerate charged and neutral spin-1 resonances.

Book Search for Higgs Bosons Decaying to aa in the Final State in pp Collisions at u221A s

Download or read book Search for Higgs Bosons Decaying to aa in the Final State in pp Collisions at u221A s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for the decay to a pair of new particles of either the 125 GeV Higgs boson (h) or a second charge parity (CP)-even Higgs boson (H) is presented. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1 of pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012. The search was done in the context of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model, in which the new particles are the lightest neutral pseudoscalar Higgs bosons (a). One of the two a bosons is required to decay to two muons while the other is required to decay to two ? leptons. No significant excess is observed above the expected backgrounds in the dimuon invariant mass range from 3.7 to 50 GeV. Upper limits are placed on the production of h → aa relative to the standard model gg → h production, assuming no coupling of the a boson to quarks. The most stringent limit is placed at 3.5% for ma = 3.75 GeV. The upper limits are also placed on the production cross section of H → aa from 2.33 to 0.72 pb, for fixed ma = 5 GeV with mH ranging from 100 to 500 GeV.
