Book Henry VII Penguin Monarchs

Download or read book Henry VII Penguin Monarchs written by Sean Cunningham and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the Penguin Monarchs series: short, fresh, expert accounts of England's rulers in a collectible format Henry VII was one of England's unlikeliest monarchs. An exile and outsider with barely a claim to the throne, his victory over Richard III at Bosworth Field seemed to many in 1485 only the latest in the sequence of violent convulsions among England's nobility that would come to be known as the Wars of the Roses - with little to suggest that the obscure Henry would last any longer than his predecessor. To break the cycle of division, usurpation, deposition and murder, he had both to maintain a grip on power and to convince England that his rule was both rightful and effective. Here, Sean Cunningham explores how, in his ruthless and controlling kingship, Henry VII did so, in the process founding the Tudor dynasty.

Book The Mad Artist

Download or read book The Mad Artist written by Roger Keen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-02-13 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s Roger Keen was a young art student, heavily under the influence of surrealism, the Beat movement and the wisdom of the East. Into the mix came LSD, cannabis, magic mushrooms and other drugs, which were seen as enablers in the pursuit of creativity and higher knowledge, fuelling a 'Quest for the Ultimate' that pushed out the boundaries of experience to extremes. This memoir examines those 'psychonautic adventures' in fascinating detail, and along the way also tells a more familiar story of youthful excess and exuberance, all set against a colourful background of hippy student life in the West Country, the South of England and London. In the tradition of Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of an English Opium Eater, Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception and Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Mad Artist not only explores a fascination with drugs, but also the awesome and sometimes frightening inner metaphysical landscapes through which the user journeys.

Book Wild Peach

  • ISBN : 9781733038423
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Wild Peach written by S*an D. Henry-Smith and published by Futurepoem. This book was released on 2020-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. African & African American Studies. LGBTQIA Studies. Environmental Studies. Photography. Hybrid. WILD PEACH is a multisensory roaming of landscape and interior, often (but not always) in near stillness and varying light. The power to disrupt and obscure language is an essential tool in protecting this multimodal endeavor; in this project, poetry and photography warm the taste of memory, exploring nonlinear, non-narrative time through the sonic offerings of image and text--and the Outdoors, the interpersonal, and all offered onto. Black Secrecy demands and provides a spirit of collaboration, study, and play. Rest without guilt. Two steppin' in the parking lot. Screaming into the night sky. In the garden and the noise, what must be learned from the garble? We listen. The ocean is always just over your shoulder.

Book excerpt: A true history lesson deftly woven into the plot of a fictional novel of high adventure and intrigue with romantic interludes Teenage Gray Cloud, well trained and adept in the skills of his Catawba hunter/warrior relatives, is deemed ready to go to Charles Town to further his education and to learn the ways of the white man. He is given a white mans name, Truly Doran, by his father Sean Doran long hunter, trapper, and guide/scout for the British. Sean has amassed a tidy fortune, held in trust by his friend, Henry Siles, a ship factor in the port city. While studying at the newly founded college at Charles Town, Truly experiences many exciting situations and becomes acquainted with famous historical persons. He also experiences several love affairs with different girls (strumpets and nice girls). He observes and eventually becomes involved in the conflict between hardscrabble farmers in the up-country and the spoiled scions of rich plantation owners. Befriended by Francis Marion, he later serves as chief scout for the Swamp Fox during the war of rebellion. Early on, Truly fights beside Sgt. William Jasper under command of Col. William Moultrie at the palmetto-log fort on Sullivans Island. During the war he is assigned as a scout to Lt. Col. William Washingtons cavalry as the Patriot dragoons counter the murderous thrusts of the green-coated British Loyal Legion led by Lt. Col. Banister Bloody Ban Tarleton. Although officially a member of Francis Marions legion, Truly is often detached for service as scout and fighter in skirmishes with other Patriot leaders throughout the colony. He assists Daniel Morgan at the Cowpens, and Gates at Camden, and served in three battles trying to prevent the British from taking Charles Town. Truly is also involved in the decisive battles at the Waxhaws, Kings Mountain and Eutaw Springs, among others. Throughout the war, he is active against Tarleton in a dozen major skirmishes.
