Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past is steeped in blood. Bad things happen every day. No one knows this better than LAPD Detective Tully Jarsdel. He also knows that bad things often go unpunished—all it takes is a glance at his dusty stack of cold cases to see that time is kind to sinners. A museum curator is found shot point-blank, his home torn apart. It's the sort of random crime destined to fester in an evidence locker. But it's a case tailor-made for the academic turned detective—he can't leave any question unanswered. In pursuit of an untouchable killer, Jarsdel soon uncovers a web of fraud and corruption that leads him to sunny Catalina Island, Hollywood's bygone playground. There, nothing is as it should be: the past is ever-present, and Jarsdel unwittingly finds himself embroiled in a widespread conspiracy. While reckoning with a dark legacy, he'll exhume long-buried secrets of LA's troubled past and with it, deadly consequences. A searing mystery from critically acclaimed author Joseph Schneider, The Darkest Game is a story about dread, greed, and anguish; how it spreads like rot, and how one detective struggles to keep it at bay.
Download or read book Partners in Print written by Julie Nelson Davis and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling account of collaboration in the genre of ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world) offers a new approach to understanding the production and reception of print culture in early modern Japan. It provides a corrective to the perception that the ukiyo-e tradition was the product of the creative talents of individual artists, revealing instead the many identities that made and disseminated printed work. Julie Nelson Davis demonstrates by way of examples from the later eighteenth century that this popular genre was the result of an exchange among publishers, designers, writers, carvers, printers, patrons, buyers, and readers. By recasting these works as examples of a network of commercial and artistic cooperation, she offers a nuanced view of the complexity of this tradition and expands our understanding of the dynamic processes of production, reception, and intention in floating world print culture. Four case studies give evidence of what constituted modes of collaboration among artistic producers in the period. In each case Davis explores a different configuration of collaboration: that between a teacher and a student, two painters and their publishers, a designer and a publisher, and a writer and an illustrator. Each investigates a mode of partnership through a single work: a specially commissioned print, a lavishly illustrated album, a printed handscroll, and an inexpensive illustrated novel. These case studies explore the diversity of printed things in the period ranging from expensive works made for a select circle of connoisseurs to those meant to be sold at a modest price to a large audience. They take up familiar subjects from the floating world—connoisseurship, beauty, sex, and humor—and explore multiple dimensions of inquiry vital to that dynamic culture: the status of art, the evaluation of beauty, the representation of sexuality, and the tension between mind and body. Where earlier studies of woodblock prints have tended to focus on the individual artist, Partners in Print takes the subject a major step forward to a richer picture of the creative process. Placing these works in their period context not only reveals an aesthetic network responsive to and shaped by the desires of consumers in a specific place and time, but also contributes to a larger discussion about the role of art and the place of the material text in the early modern world.

Book excerpt: Jill really hated her job. Stuck in a grimy garage, working on cars all day was a drag. She didn’t particularly like cars – and she definitely hated having hands that smelled like grease. But in a small town like Riverston Iowa, there weren’t many options for employment. And growing up with five brothers and no sisters pretty much meant her skills were limited to working on cars and playing football. With no football team in town, she found work in the garage. Most of her days were filled up with fantasies about big city life: dancing in downtown nightclubs, shopping at the trendiest spots, and – her favorite – falling into a whirlwind romance with a billionaire from the big city. Tuesday morning was yet another morning Jill spent engulfed by her fantasies. She was supposed to be working on the old rusty carburetor in Mr. Jamison’s pickup truck, but instead she spent the morning thinking about Lance. Lance was the name of her imaginary billionaire, He’d been around for a few years, haunting her fantasies and providing the loving touch she couldn’t get from real life. Lance didn’t have a face, but when she closed her eyes, she could feel his strong, steady arms around him, holding her closely as they danced for hours. Soon the dancing would surrender to kissing and caressing and his hands would begin to roam down her hips, across her shoulders and through her long brown hair. Then lance’s grip would hungrily dart inside the satin evening gown she’d be clad in. He’d lightly stroke her breasts, brining her nipples to full flower as his wet, warm kisses would hit her chin, her neck, her shoulders, her chest. Mmmmm, Lance. But then a loud, raspy voice...

Download or read book The Darker Side of Samuel Saul and David written by G. D. Vreeland and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now the sequel! Here we watch David become king over Israel. But the table is set for a rather unappetizing meal where brutality, intrigue and questionable morality and ethics are served. We see the turning point and the decline of David's power and possibly his virtue. Like so many in biblical narrative, he does not end well. Leaders take warning: integrity matters. How we respond to God's rules of engagement and how we treat others - especially the disenfranchised - will determine the difference between greatness and mediocrity and how our lives will be evaluated. As with the previous volume, this book can be utilized as a commentary and an aid to the student of Second Samuel, or each section can be read and reflected upon in isolation. I will continue my efforts to be personable but professional, playful but pointed, impassioned at times but always thought provoking. Dr. Vreeland received his Ph.D. from Trinity International University in Theological Studies (Old Testament) in 1994. He served for four academic years at the Nairobi International School of Theology. He then joined the faculty of Northwest Baptist Seminary (Tacoma, Washington) and has concluded eight years there (July '08) as Associate Professor of Semitic Languages and Biblical Literature. He teaches Hebrew, Aramaic and English Bible and related topics. So far as the Church is concerned, his love is serious biblical study as related to integrity and leadership - hence this work on Second Samuel and its prequel on First Samuel. Dr. Vreeland has been married for 27 years to the love of his life, Donna - who is still the finest English Bible scholar on the planet and to whom this volume is gratefully dedicated. They have three grown children.
