Book Chip Seal Best Practices

Download or read book Chip Seal Best Practices written by Douglas D. Gransberg and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2005 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 342: Chip Seal Best Practices examines ways to assist in the development and implementation of pavement preservation programs by identifying the benefits of using chip seal as part of a preventive maintenance program and by highlighting advanced chip seal programs in use around the world. The report includes approximately 40 best practices in the areas of chip seal design methods, contract administration, equipment practices, construction practices, and performance measures. According to the report, the increased use of chip seals for maintenance can be a successful, cost-effective way of using preventive maintenance to preserve both low-volume and higher-volume pavements.

Book A Testing and Evaluation Protocol to Assess Seal Coat Binder aggregate Compatibility

Download or read book A Testing and Evaluation Protocol to Assess Seal Coat Binder aggregate Compatibility written by Sanjaya Priyantha Senadheera and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project was commissioned to develop a new testing protocol to assess the compatibility of asphalt binders and aggregates used in seal coats and surface treatments. The study encompassed physical, chemical and mechanical aspects of compatibility as well as the construction factors that affect the bond between the aggregate and binder in seal coats. Prior to the development of the testing protocol, a constructability review was undertaken to assess the conditions under which incompatibility between binders and aggregate occur. Four different tests were conducted on several aggregate-binder combinations; modified net adsorption test, TechMRT aggregate pull-out test, interfacial bonding (pull-out) test and the newly developed performance-based seal-coat aggregate-binder compatibility test. Based on the constructability review, aggregate-binder combinations were identified to represent the "best" and "worst" performing material combinations. These combinations were used to test the feasibility of the testing protocol to include both extremes of the performance spectrum.

Book Construction Equipment Management for Engineers Estimators and Owners Second Edition

Download or read book Construction Equipment Management for Engineers Estimators and Owners Second Edition written by Douglas D. Gransberg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-05-31 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction Equipment Management for Engineers, Estimators, and Construction Managers, Second Edition has been extensively rewritten to not only bring it up to date with the state of current practice, but also to serve as a textbook for university courses in construction engineering and management. The authors advanced the previous edition’s practical, hands-on approach and added material on the future of construction equipment fleet management, which they believe will require a new technology-based skillset to maximize the cost-effectiveness of construction equipment operations. As such, the book covers the latest construction equipment technologies. Features: Examines emergent technologies in the field, including automated machine guidance systems, intelligent compaction operations, and equipment-related civil integrated management tools. Provides information on how to reduce an equipment fleet’s environmental impact, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions through enhanced equipment management and optimization practices. Discusses estimating equipment ownership, operating costs, economic life and optimal replacement timing. Demonstrates how to maximize profit by determining the optimum equipment mix and estimating productivity. Illustrates the use of production-based linear scheduling and stochastic simulations to maximize project cost and schedule certainty. This new edition will serve as an essential textbook for students as well as a valuable reference for a wide range of professionals within the construction, architecture, and engineering industries.

Book Laboratory Evaluation of Constructability i e Constructibility Issues with Surface Treatment Binder

Download or read book Laboratory Evaluation of Constructability i e Constructibility Issues with Surface Treatment Binder written by Sanjaya Priyantha Senadheera and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to other binder types, emulsified asphalt (EA)s are more complex in composition, have a much shorter shelf life, and their behavior under different construction scenarios is difficult to predict. TxDOT field personnel can effectively use EAs if tools are available to test binder quality as received at the site and to predict their behavior. It is useful for the designers to rank the most effective binder-aggregate combinations and to predict the rate at which EA will achieve stiffness and bond strength with aggregate to be able to open the road for traffic. This research project was launched by TxDOT to address these issues and find solutions that are of benefit to field personnel. A field evaluation of selected seal coat projects was conducted to help design laboratory experiments for this study. For each field project, extensive construction-related data was collected. The same aggregate-binder combinations used in these field projects were also included in the laboratory test programs at Texas Tech Center for Multidisciplinary Research in Transportation (TechMRT) and Center for Transportation Research, University of Texas (CTR). The CTR team conducted additional weather-rack related tests using a wider range of binders available from the TxDOT Cedar Park lab.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive literature review was conducted in this project, including review of Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), national, and international specifications. Based on the findings and results from prior tasks, several specification changes are recommended. This report contains the proposed specifications and a summary of the key changes. Along with the specification recommendations, new test procedures are also needed as part of the specification requirements. This research focused on developing a new design procedure for application rates. It is proposed that the new design procedure be outlined in a TxDOT test procedure format, then that procedure referenced in the specificat

Book Placement and evaluation of a seal coat using emulsified asphalt

Download or read book Placement and evaluation of a seal coat using emulsified asphalt written by Fred E. Atnip and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased concern for the environment and spiraling prices for petroleum products have brought about an increased interest in the use of emulsified asphalts in highway construction. This emphasis has been primarily in the construction of chip seals using emulsions. In order to assess design and construction procedures, as well as roadway performance, an experimental emulsified asphalt seal coat was placed in Texas. The material selected for the chip seal was a CRS-2 emulsified asphalt with a design rate of emulsion at .35 - 40 gallons/square yard. The aggregate was Type B, Grade 4A, at a coverage rate of 1 cubic yard per 110-120 yard of surface. This report describes the construction procedures, material costs, energy consumption and savings, and performance of the section to date.
