Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early days of the twentieth century, movies weren't made in California. As America's film pioneers traveled westward, Colorado became a beacon to them, contributing to the early motion picture business with all the relish and gusto of a western saga. The gorgeous natural scenery was perfect for the country's (and the world's) growing infatuation with the West, turning Colorado itself into a bigger star of the early cinema than any particular actor. Using rare photos and contemporary accounts, writer and filmmaker Michael J. Spencer explores the little-known filmmaking industry that flourished in the Rocky Mountains between 1895 and 1915--west of New York but east of Hollywood.

Download or read book The Rockies and the Alps written by Katherine Manthorne and published by . This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rockies and the Alps: Bierstadt, Calame, and the Romance of the MountainsKatherine Manthorne and Tricia Laughlin BloomWith contributions by Patricia Mainardi and James M. SaslowInspired by the grandeur of the Rockies and the Alps, American and European artists strove to capture their power in paint. Landscapes of soaring peaks and spectacular vistas became increasingly popular in the mid-nineteenth century, when photographers, scientists, and armchair travelers were awakening to these wonders. Artistic interests coincided with the rise of tourism, as improved transportation and accommodations made mountains and glaciers more accessible. This richly illustrated volume brings together dazzling depictions of the Rockies and the Alps, while examining the dialogue between artists who visited and recorded these geographically distant ranges. Two key figures highlighted are Swiss painter Alexandre Calame (1810¿1864), frequently identified with Alpine views of torrents, glaciers, and gorges, and Albert Bierstadt (1830¿1902), whose impressive canvases often provided American audiences with their first glimpse of the Rockies and the western frontier. Their contemporaries included J.M.W. Turner, John Ruskin, painters of the Hudson River School Thomas Cole, Worthington Whittredge, and John F. Kensett, and photographers Carleton Watkins and Eadweard Muybridge. The Rockies and the Alps features contributions by four outstanding scholars who investigate how geology, flora and fauna, and social and literary contexts relate to the rise of alpine landscape painting. Each essay explores the close connections among these artists and diverse layers of symbolism these mountain images carried, revealing how the same landscape paintings that became archetypal symbols of American identity were in fact the product of a dialogue between American and European artists.

Book Red Light Women of the Rocky Mountains

Download or read book Red Light Women of the Rocky Mountains written by Jan MacKell and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the development of the American West, prostitution grew and flourished within the mining camps, small towns, and cities of the nineteenth-century Rocky Mountains. Whether escaping a bad home life, lured by false advertising, or seeking to subsidize their income, thousands of women chose or were forced to enter an industry where they faced segregation and persecution, fines and jailing, and battled the hazards of disease, drug addiction, physical abuse, pregnancy, and abortion. They dreamed of escape through marriage or retirement, but more often found relief only in death. An integral part of western history, the stories of these women continue to fascinate readers and captivate the minds of historians today. Expanding on the research she did for Brothels, Bordellos, and Bad Girls (UNM Press), historian Jan MacKell moves beyond the mining towns of Colorado to explore the history of prostitution in the Rocky Mountain states of Arizona, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Each state had its share of working girls and madams like Big Nose Kate or Calamity Jane who remain celebrities in the annals of history, but MacKell also includes the stories of lesser-known women whose role in this illicit trade nonetheless shaped our understanding of the American West.

Book Rod Gun and Palette in the High Rockies

Download or read book Rod Gun and Palette in the High Rockies written by James Blomfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rod, Gun, and Palette in the High Rockies: Being a Record of an Artist's Impressions in the Land of the Red Gods Some time before reaching Sherman, Wyo., 8,0l0 feet above sea level, the land takes an aspect of bleak, bare desolation, broken only by an occasional sheep herder's hut, or a straggling fence. A feeding station for stock is quite an event. Arthur comments on the isolation of things, and the hardihood of early homesteaders. This serves as the introduction to a surveyor's story told by the artist. A survey party in this part of the West years ago came Upon a deserted homestead. The doors and windows of the house were boarded up. On the boards on one side was chalked Four miles from wood. On the second side was chalked Six miles from water. On the third side, A hundred miles from a railroad, and on the last side, God bless our home. The clouds hang low, and it gets a bit monotonous. A resort is had to cards, this time Ellicott and Jimmy against Pratt and Wroe at pedro, in which the first two are victorious by a narrow margin. Bill and Art then go to a game of their own, in which, hands of twelve each being dealt, the players draw and discard in runs, threes and fours, a deuce having any value the man drawing it likes to give it in combination with the others. The man playing out all his cards first is credited with the number of pips counted on the cards still remaining in the hand of his opponent. As he plays, Bill keeps up a running comment that tickles the other two mightily. I don't hear all of it, but get a stray sentence now and then.
