This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scriptural and Statistical Views in Favor of Slavery Brother Sands: Circumstances exist among the inhabitants of these United States, which make it proper that the Scriptures should be carefully examined by Christians in reference to the institution of Slavery, which exists in several of the States, with the approbation of those who profess unlimited subjection to Gods revealed will. It is branded by one portion of people, who take their rules of moral rectitude from the Scriptures, as a great sin; nay, the greatest of sins that exist in the nation. And they hold the obligation to exterminate it, to be paramount to all others. If slavery be thus sinful, it behooves all Christians who are involved in the sin, to repent in dust and ashes, and wash their hands of it, without consulting with flesh and blood. Sin in the sight of God is something which God in his Word makes known to be wrong, either by preceptive prohibition, by principles of moral fitness, or examples of inspired men, contained in the sacred volume. When these furnish no law to condemn human conduct, there is no transgression. Christians should produce a "thus saith the Lord," both for what they condemn as sinful, and for what they approve as lawful, in the sight of Heaven. It is to be hoped, that on a question of such vital importance as this to the peace and safety of our common country, as well as to the welfare of the church, we shall be seen cleaving to the Bible, and taking all our decisions about this matter, from its inspired pages. With men from the North, I have observed for many years a palpable ignorance of the divine will, in reference to the institution of slavery. I have seen but a few, who made the Bible their study, that had obtained a knowledge of what it did reveal on this subject. Of late, their denunciation of slavery as a sin, is loud and long. I propose, therefore, to examine the sacred volume briefly, and if I am not greatly mistaken, I shall be able to make it appear that the institution of slavery has received, in the first place, 1st. The sanction of the Almighty in the Patriarchal age. 2d. That it was incorporated into the only National Constitution which ever emanated from God. 3d. That its legality was recognized, and its relative duties regulated, by Jesus Christ in his kingdom; and 4th. That it is full of mercy. Before I proceed further, it is necessary that the terms used to designate the thing, be defined. It is not a name, but a thing, that is denounced as sinful; because it is supposed to be contrary to, and prohibited by, the Scriptures. Our translators have used the term servant, to designate a state in which persons were serving, leaving us to gather the relation, between the party served and the party rendering the service, from other terms. The term slave, signifies with us, a definite state, condition, or relation, which state, condition, or relation, is precisely that one which is denounced as sinful. This state, condition, or relation, is that in which one human being is held without his consent by another, as property; to be bought, sold, and transferred, together with the increase, as property, forever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible View of Slavery I proceed, accordingly, to the evi dence of the sacred Scriptures, which, long ago, produced complete conviction in my own mind, and must, as I regard it, be equally conclusive to every can did and sincere inquirer. When the array Of positive proof is exhibited, I shall consider the objections, and ex amine their validity with all the fair ness in my power. The first appearance of slavery in the Bible is the wonderful prediction of the patriarch Noah: Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants shall he be to his brethren. Blessed be the Lord God of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant. God shall enlarge J a phet, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan shall be his ser vant. (gen. 9. Book Bible View of Slavery by John H Hopkins Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible View of Slavery, by John H. Hopkins, Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont Testaments, which, as the written word of God, afford the only infallible standard of moral rights and obligations: " "and thus [by the Southern slaves becoming Christianized through slavery] the wisdom and goodness of God are vindicated in the sanction which his Word has given, and the sentence originally passed upon Canaan, as a curse, has been converted into a blessing" (p.16);and again: "Under the rule of the Scriptures and the Constitution of the United States, the negro belongs to an inferior race, which the law did not presume to be fitted for freedom at any age" (p.12); and finally: "God, in his wisdom and providence, caused the patriarch Noah to predict that he [the negro] should be the servant of servants to the posterity of Japhet (p.12). This, then, is the proposition, that the negro slavery of the Southern States is justified by Holy Scripture. In the examination of the writer's arguments, therefore, we have nothing to do directly with Hebrew slavery, or Greek slavery, or Roman slavery, or any other system than that now in force in the slaveholding states of the Union. The writer divides his arguments into two main heads, those from the Old Testament and those from the New Testament Scriptures. The most of these have necessarily nothing to do with the subject under discussion, as they relate exclusively to the special enactments for the regulation of the Hebrew social system. By way of introduction the writer asserts that "Slavery appears to have existed in all the ages of our world, by the universal evidence of history, whether sacred or profane." It may be sufficient to set over against this, the assertion of one certainly not less eminent in the church than the author of the pamphlet before us. St. Chrysostom says: "But if you ask whence slavery has its origin, and why it has entered into human life, for I know that many readily ask and are desirous of learning such things, I will tell you; avarice, vulgar display, and insatiable cupidity, begat slavery; since Noah had no slave, Abel had no slave, nor Seth, nor yet those after this;" (Hom. in Epist. ad Ephes.22.) This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Scriptural View: Of the Moral Relations of African Slavery If the relation of slavery, as it now exists in the Southern' States, is susceptible of defence by the word of God, the relation must be a moral relation. If it is not, it ought to be abandoned. It is to the: law and to the testimony we must appeal for the defence and government of every relation in life. _if we do not speak and act agreeably thereto, it is because there is no truth in us. I will, with all due diligence, and with humble dependence on Divine aid, search the Scriptures with a view to learn what they say and teach, as to this much-litigated question. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Against Slavery Dear Sir: - The undersigned are a Committee appointed by "Council No. 3, of Camden Union League of America, to confer with you upon the subject of publishing in pamphlet form, the series of articles which lately appeared in print, under the head of "Bible Views of Slavery," "Bishop Hopkins Reviewed," written as we understand by you. It has been suggested to our Council, that if these articles (in a compact form, ) were distributed, they would serve as an antidote to the so-called Scriptural, but mischievous tract above named, issued and circulated, so extensively by sympathizers with the accursed system of American Slavery. If, therefore, in accordance with your views, we shall be pleased to have you take the necessary steps for an early publication of the same. Gentlemen: The articles to which you so kindly refer, and pay me the compliment of requesting me to publish in a more permanent form, were written at the request of several prominent citizens, who believed with myself, that the effort to secure for Slavery among the masses of the people, the sanction of the Bible, ought not to be allowed to pass unnoticed. The Bishop has been met by several "indignant protests" and scathing rebukes, for his manifest sympathy with treason and zealous defence of its source, but there has been no serious effort, so far as I know, to show the fallacy of his argument, and thus rescue the Bible from the charge of subserving the Slave interest. This I deemed necessary, and have attempted in these articles: and since their publication in a more compact and accessible form has been asked for in an informal way by many intelligent persons, and requested by yourselves in behalf of your Association, I shall take pleasure in acceding to your request, and will have them so published as soon as practicable.
