Book Legal Contributions to the Structure of Civil Society

Download or read book Legal Contributions to the Structure of Civil Society written by Per Stjernquist and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The role of the legal order in social life is one of the main problem fields of sociology of law. The treatment of these problems is hampered by the usage to start out from the legal side of the relation. The studies have consequently resulted in accounts of public policy or of the effectivity of particular legal acts. These results do not explain the problem field in question. In order to explain what law means to social life it is necessary to start out from the social side of the relation, that is from social society as a whole or from a specific process going on there. The present study tries to explain the importance of the legal order to the organization of social society as a whole in modern time. For that reason it had to form a theoretical model of civil society. Civil society is seen to be structured of the network of organized cooperative interrelations in social life. The relations are concentrated into concrete entities of cooperation as associations and companies which produce patterns of conduct for the participants."

Book Phonetics and Philology

Download or read book Phonetics and Philology written by Jane Stuart-Smith and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-06-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an exhaustive treatment of a long-standing problem of Proto-Indo-European and Italic philology: the development of the Proto-Indo-European voiced aspirates in the ancient languages of Italy. In so doing it tackles a central issue of historical linguistics: the plausibility of explanations for sound change. The author argues that the problem can be resolved by combining a traditional philological investigation with experimental phonetics. Philological methods enable the presentation of the first integrated account of the evidence for the Italic languages, with detailed discussion of languages other than Latin. Theory and methods from experimental phonetics are then adopted to offer a new explanation for how the sound change might have taken place. At the same time, phonetic methods also confirm the traditional reconstruction of voiced aspirates for Proto-Indo-European. Thus the book offers a case-study of the successful application of synchronic theory and method to a problem of diachrony.

Book Political Autobiographies and Memoirs in Antiquity

Download or read book Political Autobiographies and Memoirs in Antiquity written by Gabriele Marasco and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient autobiography has been the object of several studies and meetings. However, these have focused chiefly on the philosophical and literary aspects. This book aims to examine the development of political autobiography and memoirs in the Greek and Roman world, stressing, instead, the relation of a single work with the traditions of the genre and also the influence of the respective aims of the authors on the composition of autobiographies. At times these works were written as a means of propaganda in a political struggle, or to defend a past action, and often to furnish material to historians. Nonetheless, they still preserve the personal viewpoint and voice of the protagonists in all their vividness, even if distorted by the aim of defending their record. Political Autobiographies and Memoirs in Antiquity will be a highly valuable and useful reference tool for both scholars and students of Greek and Roman history and literature.

Book The Menorah the Ancient Seven armed Candelabrum

Download or read book The Menorah the Ancient Seven armed Candelabrum written by Rachel Hachlili and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The menorah was the most important and dominant symbol in Jewish art, both in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora. The menorah was an integral part of the Temple ritual and was the most important of the Temple vessels. Its later representation served the purpose of reminding the Jews of their previous glory as well as their pride in the Temple, and expressed the longing and hope for the renewal of the Temple services and worship. Following the destruction of the Temple, the menorah took on the profound significance of the Temple. It also came to symbolize Judaism, when it was necessary to distinguish synagogues, Jewish tombs, and catacombs from Christian or pagan structures in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora . The menorah image has been found depicted in synagogues, public buildings, homes, and the funerary context throughout the Land of Israel and the Diaspora, leaving no doubt as to which are Jewish structures. The prominent position of the menorah in Jewish art emphasizes its significance. The book is presenting the art, archaeological, historical and literary evidence for the development, form, meaning, and significance of the menorah during the Second Temple period and the Late Antiquity.
