Major challenges are facing the pharmaceutical industry, challenges which may have an impact on the rate of discovery of new pharmaceuticals, innovation in prescribing, causes of major shifts in distribution channels, and ways in which pharmaceuticals are reimbursed. As the pharmaceutical field is becoming more complex, the necessity arises to illustrate, document, and provide an overview of the major trends impinging on drug sales in a clear and accessible manner. In graphical form, Pharmaceutical Chartbook provides facts and figures for executives and managers in the industry. They, along with others involved in the pharmaceutical industry, will find this updated edition to be: comprehensive: Pharmaceutical Chartbook provides in 10 topic areas, an overview of issues involved in the discovery, distribution, and purchase of drugs. selective: Only major issues directly relevant to changes in the field are included in this edition. descriptive of trends: The charts and graphs allow for interpretive powers beyond the usual cross-sectional or snapshot approach for data presentation. contemporary in nature: The graphs are the most up-to-date and include information that is not yet publicly available. easy to use: In addition to providing a quick review of the major trends in the industry, the tables and graphs in Pharmaceutical Chartbook can be used as illustrations or included in presentations, speeches, seminars, etc. Currently, the pharmaceutical industry is gearing up for increased competition induced by managed care. Strategies to meet the challenge of increased competition include forming alliances with the generic pharmaceutical industry and integrating operations via horizontal and vertical merges. The facts and trends in the Pharmaceutical Chartbook provide needed data for executives and managers in the industry; administrators in government agencies such as the GAO, OBM, FDA, and Medicaid; administrators in public, semi-private, and private institutions like OTA, HIH, AHCPR; academicians and faculty in medical, pharmacy, public health, and nursing; and contract research organizations and other consulting firms.

Book Biographies of Remedies

Download or read book Biographies of Remedies written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when genetics and informatics are seen to transform therapeutic thinking once again, it is pertinent to look back to earlier therapeutic regimes. The long twentieth century has witnessed a tremendous upsurge in new drugs, remedies and therapeutic strategies. The cultural environments in which they emerged, the social circumstances from which they sprang, and the social effects that remedies engendered are treated in depth in this collection of essays. They address the historical variety of remedies as economic, social, and cultural objects and discuss their particular forms of production and distribution. Drawing predominantly on British and Dutch cases, the curious ‘biographies’ of modern drugs like streptomycin, taxol and interferon are reviewed, the shifting boundaries between medicines and toxic substances are explored, and remedial strategies such as contraceptives are scrutinised. This book, which emerged out of an Anglo-Dutch conference held in 1998, explores cultures of remedies from a comparative perspective.

Book The Development Factory

Download or read book The Development Factory written by Gary P. Pisano and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the pharmaceuticals giant Merck reports promising results for a potential "blockbuster" drug, the story makes the evening news. Now, at a time when new product development has become critical to success in so many industries, The Development Factory proves that process innovation - not just product innovation - can be the key to competitive edge. In this multiyear study of pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, Gary Pisano explores the dynamics of superior product and process development in a highly competitive industry that lives and dies by its R&D and depends heavily on rapid time to market. His work reveals that behind the success of many new product introductions lies the development of novel process technologies that provide lower costs, higher quality, and increased flexibility. Pisano challenges the widely held product-process life cycle view of competition, which suggests that industries tend to emphasize either product innovation or process innovation. He also questions the notion that there is a conflict between pursuit of product innovation and pursuit of lower costs, arguing that product development and process development capabilities are complementary. Extending the lessons to a wide variety of manufacturing industries, The Development Factory will guide companies toward unlocking the potential of process development and understanding the patterns of organizational behavior and managerial actions that help create and implement new capabilities over time.

Book Technological Capabilities in Developing Countries

Download or read book Technological Capabilities in Developing Countries written by Ruby Gonsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines the concept of technological capabilities from the development literature with an explanation of the specifics of these capabilities in industrial areas affected by new biotechnology. This provides a framework of analysis for the modern bioprocessing industry in Mexico. The necessity to go beyond mastery of imported technologies for these industries is discussed. More generally, the absence of core-scientific capabilities at the firm-level and other country-specific factors deter the potential for developing countries to catch-up in biotechnology.

Book excerpt: Addressing the key issues in the public debate about prescription drugs, this book establishes an analytical framework for the development of regulatory policy in this area. A range of international experts, working at the interface between the social sciences, pharmacy, medicine, and public policy debates, contribute to the delineation of these issues. The chapters are grouped into three sections. The first part focuses on prescription drugs within a social and cultural context. The second addresses the pharmaceutical market and its distinctive industrial structure. The final section provides a series of international case studies on regulatory innovation. Introductory and concluding chapters summarize the issues and draw out themes, relating them to the wider policy debate. The underlying theme of the book is that therapeutic drugs should not be considered ordinary products. These drugs raise important social, ethical, and policy questions that transcend orthodox analytical approaches and that cut across conventional disciplinary boundaries. The object of this book, therefore, in not just to identify the major issues but also to develop some of the analytical foundations required to advance the course of public policy debate in this area. Sociologists, public health specialists, policy-makers, legislators, consumer groups and those in the pharmaceutical industry will find this book an invaluable resource to that end.

Book UN Millennium Development Library Prescription for Healthy Development

Download or read book UN Millennium Development Library Prescription for Healthy Development written by UN Millennium Project and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Millennium Development Goals, adopted at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000, are the world's targets for dramatically reducing extreme poverty in its many dimensions by 2015 income poverty, hunger, disease, exclusion, lack of infrastructure and shelter while promoting gender equality, education, health and environmental sustainability. These bold goals can be met in all parts of the world if nations follow through on their commitments to work together to meet them. Achieving the Millennium Development Goals offers the prospect of a more secure, just, and prosperous world for all. The UN Millennium Project was commissioned by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to develop a practical plan of action to meet the Millennium Development Goals. As an independent advisory body directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, the UN Millennium Project submitted its recommendations to the UN Secretary General in January 2005. The core of the UN Millennium Project's work has been carried out by 10 thematic Task Forces comprising more than 250 experts from around the world, including scientists, development practitioners, parliamentarians, policymakers, and representatives from civil society, UN agencies, the World Bank, the IMF, and the private sector. This report lays out the recommendations of the UN Millennium Project Task Force 5 Working Group on Access to Essential Medicine. The Working Group recommends increasing the availability, affordability, and appropriate use of medicines in developing countries. This will require new incentives for research; better procurement, supply and distribution; strengthened primary health systems; pro-poor planning and budgeting; close collaboration with communities; and large increases in funding and the number of health workers. These bold yet practical approaches will ensure that substantially more people living in developing countries will have access to essential medicines by 2015.
