Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Church Composers English church music began to assume a definite shape and character soon after the Reformation. The encouragement given to the practice of music by the successive sovereigns of the Tudor dynasty, both by their precept and example, laid the foundation of a school of music distinctly national, which would pro bably have had its due influence over other schools had it been suffered to develop itself Without interruption. Beginning With the humblest and most simple forms, the Church Composers from time to time, at no very great intervals, expanded these germs into growths of such unexpected beauty that, though arrested in their full progress, they remain the admiration and wonder of posterity. The English school has the merit, if such it be, of having outlived, in point of relative duration, the majority of the other schools Which have been founded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scottish Anthem Book: For Use in Churches The part of the service at which the Anthem may be introduced is left to the dis cretion of the minister, who is responsible for the order of service. It may be sung after one or other of the Scripture Lessons, or after the Sermon, or before the Benediction. But a Psalm or a Hymn, in which the whole congregation may join, is, as a rule, best suited for the closing act of praise. The minister should arrange that the Anthem be in tone or subject appropriate to the rest of the service. To facilitate selection of suitable Anthems, an Index of Topics has been provided. The work is divided into three sections, and in each the Textual Anthems are placed first, in the order'of the Books of the Bible; while the pieces with words from various sources, or with metrical words, follow. The Indexes and the Textual arrangement give ready reference to the whole contents of the book. Section I. (nos. 1 - 82) contains the simpler Anthems, and is published separately, forming a collection complete in itself, which some congregations may prefer. Section II. (n os.. 83 - 120) contains the more elaborate Anthems. Section III. (nos. 121 - 216) contains-words of Anthems approved by the Committee, but the music of which could not be printed owing to copyright restrictions. In the relative Index of Words of Anthems, the composers, publishers, and sources of all the music for such words are given, that those who wish to use any of them may procure the sheets for themselves. In all the Indexes, Anthems which are given in words only are indicated by Italic type. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Music: The Edinburgh Review, No. 193 for January, 1852 The Reformation would of course find the musical part of the Church service in much the same condition on the Continent as in England, - the congregation equally exclud ed. On inquiring to whom we are indebted for that class of sacred music which is now distinguished by'the share the congregation has in its performance, Rochlitz refers to the compositions of John Huss and Jerome of Prague, and to the hymns and tunes of the United Brethren.' But the decided re action waited for the authority of Luther and Calvin. Both were bent on bringing back the congregation as active parties in this portion of the service. They differ. Ed only in the form of doing it, -luther preferring hymns composed not by Jews but Christians, Calvin preferring metrical trans lations of the Psalms; and this has since been the constant difference between the Lutheran and Calvinistic Churches over the Continent, though now in Germany and Hol land the Calvinists have agreed to sing hymns.
