Book excerpt: Scotlander By: Kent Taylor Scotlander is about a farm boy named Duke Hendrickson who becomes a knight after pulling a sword from a stone. He undergoes intense training to destroy an enchantress named Veronica and her forces of evil in hopes of fulfilling a prophecy from God. This action-packed fantasy story takes a spin on the fairy-tale genre incorporating comic book elements in the shape of energy-based attacks. Duke journeys through a world filled with magical creatures, anthropomorphic animals, and humans with supernatural gifts. The message of this story is to never give up hope even in the darkest of times. A message that is relative right now, due to the pandemic. People are dying from COVID-19, giving up hope that things will get better. In this story, the characters are facing a similar issue with the evil Veronica depriving everyone, in the kingdom of Ariana, hope and allowing evil knights and monsters to make Ariana a living hell. Citizens were held hostage in their homes and most of the good guys have been defeated until Duke came to rescue them from despair. Scotlander deals with mature yet relatable themes such as love, despair, and hope- feelings everyone can relate to.

Book excerpt: In 1930, the editor of Everyman Magazine requested entries for a new anthology of Great War accounts. The result was a revolutionary book unlike any other of the period; for as Malcolm Brown notes in his introduction 'I believe it might fairly be described as a rediscovered classic'. It was the very first collection to reveal the many dimensions of the war through the eyes of the ordinary soldier and offers heart-stopping renditions of the very first gas attack; aerial dogfights above the trenches; the moment of going over the top. Told chronologically, from the first scrambles of 1914, the drudgery of the war of attrition once the trenches had been dug, to the final joy of Armistice.

Book excerpt: Freckle-faced fifteen and sixteen year-old uniformed sentries no longer stand guard at the summer camp's main entrance, .30 caliber rifles slung over their shoulders. The roar of artillery drills, once rattling the window panes of nearby cottages and the frayed nerves of summer vationers, is silent. The bugle calls piercing the stillness of dawn and dusk on the river are no more. Over a century ago, the civilian-backed Junior Naval Reserve established its first summer statio

Book excerpt: Northern Vermont, 1918. A year like no other ushered in by a brutal cold snap for much of New England, cruel winds in subfreezing temperatures imperiling scanty reserves of fuel. Meanwhile, the Great War raged on and millions of doughboys were answering the call for duty, including droves of underage enlistees. Even worse, a deadlier enemy reached American shores in the form of the Spanish flu. The virus struck fast and violently, some victims dying within hours of their first symptoms while others surviving only a few days. There was no cure. During this dark and dangerous time, teenage runaway Henry Cameron finds refuge in Vermont as a stable boy for a retired and war-weary cavalry lieutenant. As horses bring ambition and purpose into their lives, the two kindred spirits discover how they're more alike than not, and how their broken souls are mending as they forge a bond with each other. All of this takes time along with the saving grace that only the pure love of horses can provide. For all who have feared, grieved or felt alone, this tale of friendship and hope will pull at the heartstrings and arouse emotions long after the book is finished. It will burrow into the lives of those cursed by tragedy and help transport them from collapse to resilience, in the process creating acceptance, forgiveness, and peace.
