Book Scotland s Relations with England

Download or read book Scotland s Relations with England written by William Ferguson and published by The Saltire Society. This book was released on 1994 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two national identities had established themselves by the end of the 11th century in, respectively, the north and south of Britain. The larger southern nation made several attempts on the independence of the smaller and more dynastically-troubled northern state but, after the time of Edward I of England, Scotland held its own. Then in 1603, with the accession of James VI of Scotland to the English throne, an incorporating union seemed to be in prospect, but more than a century passed before a lasting parliamentary union was achieved amid a flurry of intrigue, corruption and power-broking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Relations of England and Scotland: 1603-1707 England and Scotland are very different from one another, both religiously and politically, and we are apt to form an impression that the development of each nation was separate and distinct, while occasional incidents brought them into conflict. On closer consideration, however, this view of the relations of England and Scotland appears inadequate; they are indissolubly linked together as parts of the same island; there are similar elements in the population of each, and they have been affected by the same influences from time to time. They have had so much in common throughout their history that any movement, which took place in one, has reacted, in some fashion, upon parties and affairs in the other realm. The influence of the more advanced upon the smaller country has been patent all along, for conscious efforts have been made, again and again, to organise the Scottish kingdom on an English model. Book Anglo Scottish Relations from 1900 to Devolution and Beyond

Download or read book Anglo Scottish Relations from 1900 to Devolution and Beyond written by William L Miller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-22 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays trace the changing relationship between Scotland and England following the unifying reign of Queen Victoria, through the debates over devolution, and into a future where the Union will be under continuing pressure to evolve. Historians, social scientists and lawyers investigate the personal, social, financial and constitutional tensions between the Scots and the English, both before and after devolution, and ask if Scots and English have been driven apart, or brought more closely together by this reconstruction of the Union. Building on its companion Anglo-Scottish Relations, from 1603 to 1900 (0-19-726330-5), this volume provides wideranging insights into what some may regard as 'unfinished business'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between Scotland and England has been critical in shaping the cultural and political history of Britain over many centuries, yet historians have rarely devoted much attention to it. This book recognises the importance of viewing the national histories of Scotland and England in a wider British context, and shows how rewarding this field of study is. Ranging from the consolidation of distinct Scottish and English kingdoms to the first formation of the modern British state, the essays examine a wide variety of aspects of Anglo-Scottish relations and demonstrate the value of exploring the British dimension of the national histories of both countries.

Book The Navy and Anglo Scottish Union 1603 1707

Download or read book The Navy and Anglo Scottish Union 1603 1707 written by Colin Helling and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2022 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the union of England and Scotland by weaving the navy into a political narrative of events between the regal union in 1603 and the parliamentary union in 1707.This book examines the union of England and Scotland by weaving the navy into a political narrative of events between the regal union in 1603 and the parliamentary union in 1707. For most of the century the Scottish crown had no separate naval force which made the Stuart monarchs' navy, seen by them as a personal not a state force, unusual in being an institution which had a relationship with both kingdoms. This did not necessarily make the navy a shared organisation, as it continued to be financed from and based in England and was predominantly English. Nevertheless, the navy is an unusually good prism through which the nature of the regal union can be interrogated as English commanded ships interacted with Scottish authorities, and as Scots looked to the navy for protection from foreign invaders, such as the Dutch in the Forth in 1667, and for Scottish merchant ships trading with the Baltic and elsewhere. These interactions were often harmonious, but there were also many instances of tensions, particularly in the 1690s. The book illustrates both the ambiguous relationship between England and Scotland in the seventeenth century and also the navy's under-appreciated role in creating the political union of Britain.r Scottish merchant ships trading with the Baltic and elsewhere. A more important question arises with regard to the system of land tenure, and the change from clan ownership to feudal possession. How was the tribal system suppressed? An outline of the process by which Scotland became a feudalized country will be found in the Appendix, where we shall also have an opportunity of referring, for purposes of comparison, to the methods by which clan-feeling was destroyed after the last Jacobite insurrection. Here, it must suffice to give a brief summary of the case there presented. It is important to bear in mind that the tribes of 1066 were not the clans of 1746. The clan system in the Highlands underwent considerable development between the days of Malcolm Canmore and those of the Stuarts. Too much stress must not be laid upon the unwillingness of the people to give up tribal ownership, for it is clear from our early records that the rights of joint-occupancy were con Read More
