Book excerpt: Scottish Revival - This book is a combination of three of the Author's earlier titles, Great Scot, Pentecost 1830, and A Man Approved Of God. - In late 1829 in the West Coast of Scotland a unique revival started. A Scottish pastor, Edward Irving, had been preaching on the Holy Spirit and he did not expect a full blown Pentecostal revival. The revival spread to Irving's Scottish church in London and many people attended. As things grew to be more widespread Irving literally worked himself to death, caught pneumonia and died at the age of 42. His followers started the Catholic Apostolic Church which became heavily involved in liturgy. The denomination now exists only in Australia. This book studies the movement and the teachings of Edward Irving, a Reformed theologian, of unusual breadth.

Book Revivals in the Highlands

Download or read book Revivals in the Highlands written by Angus MacGillivray and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great revival of religion took place in the Northern Highlands of Scotland during the latter part of the eighteenth century. God brought thousands of men and women to be humble and faithful followers of Christ. They were noted as exercised and consistent Christians who delighted in the doctrines of grace. Angus MacGillivray was well placed to write an account of this remarkable period. From 1828 to 1841 he was the parish minister of Strathy on the north coast of Sutherland and knew many people who had become shining examples of godliness. He traces the history of the revivals in a number of localities in Ross-shire and Sutherland, describing the effects of the revival and illustrating this by short biographies of some eminent Christians.

Book The Invention of Scotland Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Invention of Scotland Routledge Revivals written by Murray G. H. Pittock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dynasty of high ability and great charm, the Stuarts exerted a compelling fascination over their supporters and enemies alike. First published in 1991, this title assesses the influence of the Stuart mystique on the modern political and cultural identity of Scotland. Murray Pittock traces the Stuart myth from the days of Charles I to the modern Scottish National Party, and discusses both pro- and anti-Union propaganda. He provides a unique insight into the ‘radicalism’ of Scottish Jacobitism, contrasting this ‘Jacobitisim of the Left’ with the sentimental image constructed by the Victorians. Dealing with a subject of great relevance to modern British society, this reissue provides an extensive analysis of Scottish nationhood, the Stuart cult and Jacobite ideology. It will be of great interest to students of literature, history, and Scottish culture and politics.

Lennie here focuses on the inspiring period from1858-79 in which much of Scotland was spiritually awakened, affecting every Scottish county. In three parts, Lennie guides us meticulously through the origins of the 1859-61 revival and each area affected, then goes on to chronicle a series of little-known revival after-waves that continued through the 1860s and early '70s, and finally the remarkable evangelistic campaign of Moody and Sankey, in which many have discerned the holy breath of authentic revival. Book When the Lord Walked the Land

Download or read book When the Lord Walked the Land written by Kenneth S. Jeffrey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-03-02 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies of revival have tended to approach these remarkable moments in history from either a strictly local or a sweeping national perspective. In so doing they have dealt with either the detailed circumstances of a particular situation or the broader course of events. These approaches, however, have given the incorrect impression that religious awakenings are uniform movements. As a result, revivals have been misunderstood as homogeneous campaigns. This is the first study of the 1859 revival from a regional level in a comprehensive manner. It examines this movement, arguably the most significant and far-reaching awakening in modern times, as it appeared in the city of Aberdeen, the rural hinterland of northeast Scotland, and among the fishing villages and towns that stretch along the Moray Firth. It reveals how, far from being unvarying, the 1859 revival was richly diverse. It uncovers the important influence that local contexts brought to bear upon the timing and manifestation of this awakening. Above all, it has established the heterogeneous nature of simultaneous revival movements that appeared in the same vicinity.
