Program sessions are divided into three parts: input, integration, and output. Input--the basic perception of social cues. Integration--how to put social cues together. Output--how to respond appropriately to others. Students are asked to participate in process dramas and take on roles that explore various outcomes. During role plays, students learn to divide complex social interactions into sequential parts, discuss the emotions involved, and act out a variety of possible responses. They also learn practical skills for dealing with teasing and understanding complex social cues. An accompanying CD of all the reproducible forms and student handouts is included with the book.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was two fold: to research and select an appropriate prescriptive social skills program for nine students with high incidence disabilities and to examine the results of the prescriptive classroom-based social skills intervention program for students receiving services in a self-contained, special education classroom in order to determine whether or not the program assists students in improving their social skills. Students participated in twenty-three social skills training sessions in the domains of cooperation, assertion, responsibility, and self- control, led by the researcher, during the course of the school day. Outcome measures were determined for social skills and problem behaviors through use of the Social Skills Rating System-Teacher version (Gresham and Elliott, 1990) prior to and after social skills training. A group-paired t- test using pre and post intervention scores from the Social Skills Rating System-Teacher version (Gresham and Elliott, 1990) showed an improvement in social skills as well as a decrease in problem behaviors for the participants. Limitations of the study are discussed and directions for future investigations are offered.

The research question investigated was, does a focus on social skills in a second grade curriculum affect the social competence and behavior of students? The 26 second graders participated in a seven-week social skills intervention program that consisted of two twenty-minute sessions per week, with six social skills addressed in all. The first session introduced the skill with a children's literature book and the second included an activity to reinforce the skill. Quantitative and qualitative data were taken on a group of six focus students. Data sources included ongoing naturalistic observations, pre/post teacher evaluations, and pre/post one-on-one interviews. Results were systematically and individually analyzed by focus student and indicated an increase in students' social competence. Further, students demonstrated increased initiative in interacting with others and an overall trend in being more socially engaged" -- Abstract, p. 1.

Everybody needs to be socially competent for living a better life in society, having good relationships and interactions with others. Researchers have concluded that deficits in social competence can affect later success in life. Social competence has frequently been cited as a critical component of life adjustment (e.g., Epstein & Cullinan, 1987; Neel, 1988). In particular, the importance of social competence and related personality features has been stressed for individuals who have mental retardation or other developmental disabilities (e.g., Balla & Zigler, 1979). As a consequence, social skills instruction has increasingly been recognized as a key component to be included in intervention programs for students who are mildly mentally retarded. (Gable. A.R & Warren. F.S., 1993). The American Association on Mental Retardation (2002), defines mental retardation as "Mental retardation is disability characterized by significant limitation both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior as expressed in conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills. This disability originates before age 18". (p.1). Social skills are specific behaviors that facilitate interpersonal interactions and maintain a degree of independence in daily functioning. Social competence involves the use of those skills at the right times and places, showing social perception, cognition, and judgment of how to act in a particular situation and how to adjust one's behavior to meet different situations (Greenspan, 1979, 1990; Kerr & Nelson, 1989; Sargent, 1989).
