Book Quebec Science Education Which Directions

Download or read book Quebec Science Education Which Directions written by Association des professeurs de sciences du Québec and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings are presented of a symposium on science education in Quebec, which was sponsored by the Science Council of Canada and the Association des Professeurs de Sciences du Quebec. Papers and authors addressing the background and present state of Quebec science education are as follows: "Science Teaching at the Secondary Level: An Evaluation" (Louis Ste-Marie); and "Science Teaching: An Answer or a Question?" (Marcel Risi). In addition, comments are offered by Graziella Levy concerning developments at the secondary and primary levels and by Alexander Liutec concerning the present and future situation of science education in the English sector. Future directions for science teaching in Quebec are addressed in "What Sort of Scientific Education for What Sort of Society?" (Jacques Desautels). Graeme Welch also discusses the future directions for science education and suggests that science teachers must assume responsibility for reinforcing linguistic, mathematical, and cognitive skills development of students. Future directions in Quebec are also addressed by Germain Gauthier, who identifies some important characteristics of the social and educational environment in Quebec and outlines possible approaches to science education. The topic of popularization is discussed by Pierre Sormany with regard to the accuracy of scientific subject matter in popular texts and approaches to interest students in science. A concluding statement by Gilbert Lannoy summarizes the scope of the comments and papers presented in the symposium, and additional summaries are presented of these presentations and of discussions. Appended materials include a symposium program and a paper, "Science Teaching in Quebec. Why? For Whom?" (Raymond Duchesne). (SW)

Book Science Education in Canada

Download or read book Science Education in Canada written by Christine D. Tippett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a meso-level description of demographics, science education, and science teacher education. Representing all 13 Canadian jurisdictions, the book provides local insights that serve as the basis for exploring the Canadian system as a whole and function as a common starting point from which to identify causal relationships that may be associated with Canada’s successes. The book highlights commonalities, consistencies, and distinctions across the provinces and territories in a thematic analysis of the 13 jurisdiction-specific chapters. Although the analysis indicates a network of policy and practice issues warranting further consideration, the diverse nature of Canadian science education makes simple identification of causal relationships elusive. Canada has a reputation for strong science achievement. However, there is currently limited literature on science education in Canada at the general level or in specific areas such as Canadian science curriculum or science teacher education. This book fills that gap by presenting a thorough description of science education at the provincial/territorial level, as well as a more holistic description of pressing issues for Canadian science education.

Book excerpt: Science Culture: Where Canada Stands presents a comprehensive examination of Canada’s science culture. Most notably, it contains the results of a new public survey that assesses Canadians’ science attitudes, engagement, and knowledge. The report reviews data on Canadians’ science skills and the current peer-reviewed literature on science culture. It also features an inventory and analysis of the organizations and programs that support and promote science culture in Canada, particularly among youth. This collection of data helps to paint the clearest picture of Canada’s science culture and science culture support system in 25 years. The report also examines strategies that can be used to cultivate and sustain a strong science culture for years to come.
