Book Rediscovering French Science Fiction in Literature Film and Comics

Download or read book Rediscovering French Science Fiction in Literature Film and Comics written by Philippe Mather and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French science-fiction (SF) is as old as the French language. Cyrano de Bergerac wrote about a trip to the moon that was published back in 1657, as did Jules Verne in 1865, this time using hard, scientific facts. The first movie showing a trip to the moon was made by Georges Méliès in 1902. In the comics’ format, Hergé had Tintin walk on the moon in 1954, 15 years before Neil Armstrong. These are just a few of the many unique French contributions to SF that rightly deserve to be better known. One of the purposes of this collection is to introduce French SF to an English-speaking audience. Rediscovering French Science Fiction... first revisits proto science-fiction from authors like Cyrano de Bergerac and Jules Verne, before delving into contemporary science-fiction works from authors such as René Barjavel and Jacques Spitz. A contribution from preeminent SF author Élisabeth Vonarburg, from Québec, helps to understand the constraints and advantages of writing SF in French. A third section is devoted to French SF in movies and graphic novels, media where French creators have been recognized worldwide. This collection explores many aspects of French SF, including the genre’s deep roots in popular culture, the influence of key authors on its historical development, and the form and function of science and fantasy, as well as the impact of films and graphic novels on the public perception of the genre’s nature.

Rosny, who was a member of the distinguished Goncourt literary academy, was also the first writer to straddle the line between mainstream literature and science fiction. Until now, Rosny has best been known to the English-speaking public for his prehistoric thriller, Quest for Fire. In The Xipehuz, men encounter inorganic aliens, with whom all forms of communication prove impossible. In Another World, a mutant whose vision is superior to that of ordinary men discovers that humans share the Earth with two other species, the invisible Moedigen and Vuren. In The Death of the Earth, Earth, in the far future, has become a desert, and the last descendents of humanity are slowly being replaced by a new species, the metal-based "Ferromagnetals." In The Navigators of Space, astronauts travel to Mars in a spaceship powered by artificial gravity and come in contact with a dying race that is gentle, peaceful, six-eyed and three-legged. This is a series of seven volumes, six of which are translated and annotated by Brian Stableford, devoted to presenting the classic works of this giant of French science fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In pursuit of a different life, Harrison leaves everything behind - his family, his community, and even his own name. He can never go back. Global society is united with a simple guarantee: everyone can achieve stable, lasting happiness for one hundred years in a curated lifestyle that brings them joy. Well... not unlimited joy, just mild contentment. No more, no less. Every element of life is controlled by Vie - an AI system that is worshipped as divine. She guides members into 'harmony' with in-ear alerts, retina screens, and vast, immersive simulations. Harrison is ambitious and impulsive with a curious habit of recalling hazy memories that never happened. The course of his life is punctuated with hasty decisions, emotional compromises, and genuine attempts to play by the rules. He's not only running out of options; he's running out of time. Is Harrison's will strong enough to break Vie's authoritarian hold? Or will he finally learn to settle for mediocrity, just like everyone else? The threat of 'eviction' is looming, and Harrison's death day might come sooner than he thinks. For fans of Alduous Huxley, Ray Bradbury, Lois Lowry, and Ira Levin, this thought-provoking dystopian novel sparks questions about the diversity of joy and the resilient fight for independence.
