Book Ecological Footprints in Literature An Excursion into Selected Nature Writings and Nature Novels

Download or read book Ecological Footprints in Literature An Excursion into Selected Nature Writings and Nature Novels written by Dr. Archana R. Kadiyan and published by Shineeks Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive view of the environmental discourses that are found in the literary representations of the natural world. The book presents an in-depth analysis of the symbolic manifestations of the outer world in various genres of literature such as nature novels and nature or ecological writings. It deeply captures the mutual interactions that occur between the human and the non-human world that tend to influence each other’s actions and processes. By exploring the ecocritical leanings and tracing all the phases of Anthropocene, the book takes its readers for a deep excursion into the beauteous, dynamic, natural, and overtly spiritual world of Nature as exhibited in the writings such as Thoreau’s Walden, Khushwant Singh’s Nature Watch, and Starhawk’s The Earth Path which is contrasted against the eco-catastrophic world of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. An insightful and analytical journey into the world of more unique portrayals of the ecological world that tend to strike a balance between two distinct worlds: the real and the imaginative, the spiritual and the material as well as the natural and the man-made (as reflected in the nature novels: George Eliot’s Mill on the Floss, Khushwant Singh’s I Shall not Hear the Nightingale, Starhawk’s Fifth Sacred Thing, and Ernest Callenbach’s Ecotopia: A Novel. The book, thus, with its underpinning wisdom will be an interesting and more enlightening read for the critics, academicians, and researchers.

Book Field Trips in Environmental Education

Download or read book Field Trips in Environmental Education written by Martin Storksdieck and published by BWV Verlag. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HauptbeschreibungField trips are a popular method for introducing students to concepts, ideas, and experiences that cannot be provided in a classroom environment. This is particularly true for trans-disciplinary areas of teaching and learning, such as science or environmental education. While field trips are generally viewed by educators as beneficial to teaching and learning, and by students as a cherished alternative to classroom instruction, educational research paints a more complex picture. At a time when school systems demand proof of the educational value of field trips, large gaps ofte.

Book The Collaborative Era in Science

Download or read book The Collaborative Era in Science written by Caroline S. Wagner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years a global network of science has emerged as a result of thousands of individual scientists seeking to collaborate with colleagues around the world, creating a network which rises above national systems. The globalization of science is part of the underlying shift in knowledge creation generally: the collaborative era in science. Over the past decade, the growth in the amount of knowledge and the speed at which it is available has created a fundamental shift—where data, information, and knowledge were once scarce resources, they are now abundantly available. Collaboration, openness, customer- or problem-focused research and development, altruism, and reciprocity are notable features of abundance, and they create challenges that economists have not yet studied. This book defines the collaborative era, describes how it came to be, reveals its internal dynamics, and demonstrates how real-world practitioners are changing to take advantage of it. Most importantly, the book lays out a guide for policymakers and entrepreneurs as they shift perspectives to take advantage of the collaborative era in order to create social and economic welfare.

Book The Professional Knowledge Base of Science Teaching

Download or read book The Professional Knowledge Base of Science Teaching written by Deborah Corrigan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years, much has been written about the knowledge bases thought necessary to teach science. Shulman has outlined seven knowledge domains needed for teaching, and others, such as Tamir, have proposed somewhat similar domains of knowledge, specifically for science teachers. Aspects of this knowledge have changed because of shifts in curriculum thinking, and the current trends in science education have seen a sharp increase in the significance of the knowledge bases. The development of a standards-based approach to the quality of science teaching has become common in the Western world, and phrases such as “evidence-based practice” have been tossed around in the attempt to “measure” such quality. The Professional Knowledge Base of Science Teaching explores the knowledge bases considered necessary for science teaching. It brings together a number of researchers who have worked with science teachers, and they address what constitutes evidence of high quality science teaching, on what basis such evidence can be judged, and how such evidence reflects the knowledge basis of the modern day professional science teacher. This is the second book produced from the Monash University- King’s College London International Centre for the Study of Science and Mathematics Curriculum. The first book presented a big picture of what science education might be like if values once again become central while this book explores what classroom practices may look like based on such a big picture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of the diverse traditions of medical humanism, classical philology, and natural philosophy, Renaissance naturalists created a new science devoted to discovering and describing plants and animals. Drawing on published natural histories, manuscript correspondence, garden plans, travelogues, watercolors, and drawings, The Science of Describing reconstructs the evolution of this discipline of description through four generations of naturalists. In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, naturalists focused on understanding ancient and medieval descriptions of the natural world, but by the mid-sixteenth century naturalists turned toward distinguishing and cataloguing new plant and animal species. To do so, they developed new techniques of observing and recording, created botanical gardens and herbaria, and exchanged correspondence and specimens within an international community. By the early seventeenth century, naturalists began the daunting task of sorting through the wealth of information they had accumulated, putting a new emphasis on taxonomy and classification. Illustrated with woodcuts, engravings, and photographs, The Science of Describing is the first broad interpretation of Renaissance natural history in more than a generation and will appeal widely to an interdisciplinary audience.

Book Coastal Management Revisited

Download or read book Coastal Management Revisited written by Bernhard Glaeser and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents an overview and historic perspectives of a novel scientific field coming of age today: coastal and ocean management. It covers diverse and changing issues, ranging from conflict resolution to governance and ethical-political imperatives, natural disasters and climate change, culminating in coastal and ocean typologies, the basis for a future theory of coasts and oceans. Eighteen chapters, written by two main authors in cooperation with international experts, review 25 years of research. The authors address challenges to society related to global change issues that have been generated by human activity in both temperate (Sweden, Germany and the United States) and tropical regions (Brazil, Indonesia). Ultimately, the book documents the maturation of a field and responds to changing societal needs and scientific outlooks. It gathers recent analyses along with important earlier research, with a foreword by Biliana Cicin-Sain and Richard Delaney, globally renowned as coastal and ocean experts in theory and practice. Its broad approach makes the book a must-read for graduate and postgraduate students, as well as coastal management and marine spatial planning practitioners, and for researchers in the fields of geography, anthropology, history of science, human and social ecology, and environmental and development studies.
