Book Science and Hebrew Tradition Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Science and Hebrew Tradition Essays Classic Reprint written by Thomas Henry Huxley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Hebrew Tradition Essays This Parthian policy is carried out with some dexterity; but, like other such manoeuvres in the face of a strong foe, it seems likely to end in disaster. It is easy to say, and sounds plausible, that the Bible was not meant to teach anything but ethics and religion, and that its utterances on other matters are mere obiter dicta; it is also a specious suggestion that inspiration, filtering through human brains, must undergo a kind of fallibility contamination; and that this human impurity is responsible for any errors, the exist ence of which has to be admitted, however unwillingly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Hebrew Tradition Essays For more than a thousand years, the great majority of the most highly civilised and instructed nations in the world have confidently believed and passionately maintained that certain writings, which they entitle sacred, occupy a unique position in literature, in that they possess an authority, different in kind, and immeasurably superior in weight, to that of all other books. Age after age, they have held it to be an indisputable truth that, whoever may be the ostensible writers of the Jewish, Christian, and Mahometan scriptures, God Himself is their real author; and, since their conception of the attribues of the Deity excludes the possibility of error and - at least in relation to this particular matter - of wilful deception, they have drawn the logical conclusion that the denier of the accuracy of any statement, the questioner of the binding force of any command, to be found in these documents is not merely a fool, but a blasphemer. From the point of view of mere reason he grossly blunders; from that of religion he grievously sins. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Some Chapters on Judaism and the Science of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Chapters on Judaism and the Science of Religion Classic Reprint written by Louis Grossmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Chapters on Judaism and the Science of Religion Religion is the truth that absorbs all other truths. It is the highest synthesis, the science of all sciences. All attainments are subservient to the purposes of progressing culture. The aggregate experiences of mankind are on the line of the universal end to emancipate the soul. In this sense all the activities of humanity in their vast variety and multiform energies are in the employ of religion. For religion is the name of the final and much desired state, when man will be sovereign of himself, as far as he can, and master of the tools of his life. I have attempted in the following pages to sketch a few agreements which are already noticeable between historical Judaism and the present science of religion. I mean to do a humble task, conscious of the magnitude of the problem. I am content with suggesting merely the thought, that the science of religion is the science of Judaism. Book The Science of the Talmud An Essay Written for the Young Men s Hebrew Association of Philadelphia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Science of the Talmud An Essay Written for the Young Men s Hebrew Association of Philadelphia Classic Reprint written by Charles M. Boerman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of the Talmud: An Essay Written for the Young Men's Hebrew Association of Philadelphia Under the Seleucidean kings of Syria, into whose hands Palestine fell after the death of Alexander of Macedon, the Jews, being cruelly oppressed and hindered in their religious rites and services, rose in revolt under the Maccabees and regained their independence, but, alas! Only for a short time. Jerusalem was shortly taken by Roman arms under Pompey, and Judea was soon afterward reduced to a Roman province. Several attempts were made by the brave Jews to shake off the yoke of the Romans, but it was impossible for them to withstand the most powerful empire that ever existed. So the temple was destroyed by Titus, and Jeru salem laid waste, and finally the population was decimated, exiled and taken into captivity under the Emperor Hadrian. During all these vicissitudes and changes of fortune which befell Israel from the time of the birth of the nation, the moral and religious life of the people grew slowly but steadily in strength, depth and breadth. The law which, according to tradition, was proclaimed to the people of Israel from Mount Sinai, remained for along time a dead letter, the people preferring the image of the golden calf, and the brazen serpent, and the service of Baal, Moloch and Ashtoreth, to the abstract idea of an unseen, unknow able, infinite and everlasting Supreme Being. All through the period of the Judges and during the greater portion of the reign of the Kings, the people continued to serve heathen gods and to sacrifice to them. But gradually dawn broke upon them and the light of a truer religion opened their eyes, and with the more enlightened belief came also purer ideas of morality and justice. The great prophets appeared in the arena. Isaiah, with his grand moral perceptions, his clear religious ideas, his divine gift of elo quence, spoke words which could not fail to pierce the hearts of the feeling, so that all in Israel who had eyes saw the light, and all who had ears heard the words of truth. Jeremiah in Jeru salem and Ezekiel in Babylon, and especially the great unknown prophet, whose divine speeches are attached to those of Isaiah, continued the work of teaching the people true religion and pure morals. Book The Origin and Nature of Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin and Nature of Man Classic Reprint written by Samuel Biggar Giffen McKinney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Nature of Man Such is the introductory sentence to Huxley's essays on Science and Hebrew Tradition and it correctly describes the attitude of all men of sound intelligence and clear knowledge towards the Bible. Not merely for more than one thousand years, but for more than three thousand years, the greatest thinkers have preserved Sacred Books with profound respect and reverence. Confucius described himself as one who loved and believed in the ancients; and long before the days of Confucius the wise men in 'egypt and Asia treasured the wisdom handed downby the great primitive teachers of mankind. What gives Sacred Books their unique position? Works on agriculture and mechanics, which would teach something of the nature of the material world and of the physical laws governing phenomena, seem to the human animal of much. More import ance than theories respecting his origin and nature; and yet the most ancient writings of every nation that has an ancient literature treat of the super natural or the spiritual. Man is a spirit, and there fore cannot live by bread alone. The instinct to seek harmony with the Infinite Spirit is more vital to the normal man than the instinct to eat bread. Multitudes have died for their religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism and Islam: A Prize Essay Did Muhammad wish to borrow from Judaism? Could Muhammad borrow from Judaism and if so, how was such borrowing possible for him? Was it compatible with his plan to borrow from Judaism? The second division must bring forward the facts to prove the borrowing, which has been stated on general grounds to have taken place. Only in this way can an individual proof of the kind referred to acquire scientific value, partly as throwing light upon the nature of Muhammad's plan, and partly as showing the intrinsic necessity of the fact and its actual importance by virtue of its connection with other facts of Muhammad's life and age. To this an appendix will be added, in which will be given a collection of those passages in which Muhammad seems not so much to have borrowed from Judaism, as to have reviewed it and that too in a hostile spirit.
