Book School Site Management and School Restructuring

Download or read book School Site Management and School Restructuring written by Grover Henry Baldwin and published by Education Law Association. This book was released on 1993 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Included in calls for change during the school reform of the 1980s were demands that teachers be given more control over education in the classroom. Such calls have led to the propagation of changes in the schools that allow teachers to take the lead in education, with school management being left to administrators. These changes create legal questions about the roles of school boards, administrators, and states in governing schools, management prerogatives, and the role of parents in education. This report addresses school-site management and newer reform issues, reviews important court decisions, and projects future areas of legal concern to teachers and administrators. Because education is a state responsibility, local school districts must obtain permission from the state to develop school-site management plans. In addition, local school boards may not, without the permission of the state legislature, give administrators or school boards unlimited authority to run schools. However, school boards are the arbiters of disputes over control of school reform and represent the community. Following an introduction, the monograph's five core chapters focus on educational governance and school-site management, school-site management and school-restructuring issues, administrators and restructuring efforts, professional staff and restructuring efforts, and student rights and school choice. Conclusions and implications are offered in a final chapter. A table of cases is included. (Contains 25 references.) (JPT)

Book Handbook on Restructuring and Substantial School Improvement

Download or read book Handbook on Restructuring and Substantial School Improvement written by Herbert J. Walberg and published by IAP. This book was released on 2007-08-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Published in cooperation with The Center on Innovation & Improvement) As suggested by the title, the purpose of this Handbook on Restructuring and Substantial School Improvement is to provide principles for restructuring and substantially improving schools. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the Center on Innovation & Improvement (CII) engaged leading experts on restructuring and school improvement to prepare modules for this handbook to assist states, districts, and schools in establishing policies, procedures, and support to successfully restructure schools. The Handbook is organized into three sections. The topic of the Handbook’s modules – restructuring with a focus on the district as the impetus for dramatic improvement – is relatively new in the nation’s education history. For this reason, the module authors were selected because they are highly experienced experts in their fields and can be counted on to judiciously weigh the less than definitive evidence and to state useful guiding principles.

Book Bold Plans for School Restructuring

Download or read book Bold Plans for School Restructuring written by Samuel C. Stringfield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two powerful forces are driving American's demands for better schools -- one longstanding force is idealistic and the other is "new" and economic. The current group of young Americans is in danger of being the first full generation to consistently make less money and enjoy fewer worldly rewards than their parents. The intersection of idealistic and pragmatic forces has produced an era of calls for reform in U.S. education that is unparalleled -- calls that have resulted in the creation of the New American Schools Development Corporation (NASDC). The chapters in this book highlight the path traveled by NASDC -- a private, non-profit corporation charged with creating new, "break the mold" school designs for the 21st century -- and describes the first three years' accomplishments of nine NASDC development teams.

Book Restructuring America s Schools

Download or read book Restructuring America s Schools written by Anne Chambers Lewis and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 11 chapters, this book objectively looks at school restructuring on the basis of prominent reports on education; materials submitted by local schools and school systems; results from the AASA (American Association of School Administrators) survey; and interviews with local school leaders, prominent reformers, as well as several state and national organization representatives. Chapter 1 defines "restructuring." Chapter 2 examines restructuring within the context of current educational reform literature. Chapter 3 furnishes the philosophical bases of restructuring. Chapter 4 articulates teachers' views toward restructuring. Chapter 5 discusses the role of the business community in the effort to restructure U.S. public education. Chapter 6 describes the role of university involvement in school restructuring. State policies regarding major educational reforms--the subject of Chapter 7--have experienced a restructuring of their own, as they have evolved from proscriptive measures to those that enable school-site change. A discussion of the complexities and impact of school restructuring on school districts is the focus of chapter 8. Chapter 9 centers on the decisionmaking process in the restructuring effort. Chapters 10 and 11 discuss coping with change once restructuring takes place; suggest that the changed work environment requires new ways and means for leaders, supervisors, teaching staff, and students to perform effectively in new surroundings; and offer change strategies to assist school personnel to adapt to restructuring efforts. Download or read book Improving America s Schools written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-11-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reform of American education is largely motivated by concerns about our economic competitiveness and American's standard of living. Yet, few if any of the public school reform agendas incorporate economic principles or research findings. Improving America's Schools explores how education and economic research can help produce, in the words of Harvard's Dale W. Jorgenson, "a unified framework for future education reform." This book presents the perspectives of noted experts, including Eric A. Hanushek, author of Making Schools Work, on creating incentives for improved school and student performance; Under Secretary of Education Marshall S. Smith on the Clinton Administration's reform program; and Rebecca Maynard, University of Pennsylvania, on the education of the disadvantaged. This volume explores these areas: The importance of schooling to labor market success. The prospects for combining school-based management with teacher incentives to gain the best of both approaches. The potential of recent innovations in student achievement testing, including new "value-added" indicators. The economic factors involved in maintaining an adequate stock of effective teachers. The volume also explores why, despite similar standards of living, France, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, and the United States produce different levels of education achievement. Improving America's Schools informs the current debate over school reform with a fresh perspective, examples, and data. This readable volume will be of interest to policymakers, researchers, educators, and education administrators as well as economists and employersâ€"it is also readily accessible to concerned parents and the larger community.

Book Restructuring Schools for Collaboration

Download or read book Restructuring Schools for Collaboration written by Diana G. Pounder and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-03-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a more comprehensive discussion of collaborative school efforts than any other single source currently available. Specifically, multiple disciplinary perspectives are presented, addressing the complexity or "promises and pitfalls" of school collaboration efforts. The book is organized in terms of major considerations in school collaboration initiatives—the organizational structure; the change process; inter-agency and intra-school collaborative efforts; and implications for instruction, leadership, and leadership preparation. Also, the book informs the design of educator preparation programs emphasizing collaborative schools and cross-disciplinary teaching. The chapters address many issues regarding school collaboration, such as which organizational structures will enhance collaborative efforts; which change processes are important in building school collaboration; the costs (in effort, energy, time, or other resources) of collaborating with other external agencies; how teachers' work can be redesigned to enhance collaboration between teachers and the anticipated outcomes for teachers and students; how educators can overcome their separate role socializations to build collaborative work relationships within schools; and the implications of school collaboration for teaching and learning, school leadership, and leadership preparation. The closing chapter offers five synthesizing issues or dilemmas for school collaboration.
