Download or read book School Progress and School Facts Classic Reprint written by Bureau of Municipal Research and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Progress and School Facts The report from which this sentence is quoted, A Bureau of Child Hygiene, was first given out by Health Commissioner Darlington at a joint session of public education associations and the International Congress on Tuberculosis, at Washington, Octo ber, 1908. It showed that more law was not necessary for parents of 96% of I400 children and that the break-down of physical ex amination was due, not to the fact that it was under the health department, but to administrative weaknesses which were easily corrected in the case of the i4oo children studied, by instruction of mothers and by facilitating treatment of children found to have easily removable defects. Instead of supporting the con tentions mentioned in the rejoinder, it proved that substituting efficiency for inefficiency in the department of health had ac complished in three schools the results contemplated by the passage of additional laws and by the transfer 0f examination to the department of education. Book excerpt: Evaluating student achievement in Denver Public Schools (DPS) starts with taking a hard look at where performance stands. In this report, the researchers examine key transition points across the education pipeline, from preschool through college. They gauge student progress--or lack of progress. And they identify challenges. That way, they can direct attention toward promising strategies that will allow all DPS students the opportunity to reach their full academic potential. Measuring academic success as students progress from preschool through high school and into college provides important information about the quality of the DPS education system. This report uses the latest data available to look at key transition points for DPS students from 2005 to 2011 to identify: (1) Outcomes and trends in academic achievement and growth as students move from preschool through K-12 and into college; and (2) Potential barriers to success. DPS has much to be proud of. Across all grades and subjects, the district is making significant gains in improving academic achievement, especially among lower-income students, who are the primary focus of this report. Indeed, very few, if any, Colorado school districts have consistently made this level of progress. (Contains 18 endnotes.) [This report was co-produced with A+ Denver and Metro Organizations for People (MOP).].

Book Learning Strategies and Learning Styles

Download or read book Learning Strategies and Learning Styles written by Ronald R. Schmeck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A style is any pattern we see in a person's way of accomplishing a particular type of task. The "task" of interest in the present context is education-learning and remembering in school and transferring what is learned to the world outside of school. Teachers are expressing some sort of awareness of style when they observe a particular action taken by a particular student and then say something like: "This doesn't surprise me! That's just the way he is. " Observation of a single action cannot reveal a style. One's impres sion of a person's style is abstracted from multiple experiences of the person under similar circumstances. In education, if we understand the styles of individual students, we can often anticipate their perceptions and subsequent behaviors, anticipate their misunderstandings, take ad vantage of their strengths, and avoid (or correct) their weaknesses. These are some of the goals of the present text. In the first chapter, I present an overview of the terminology and research methods used by various authors of the text. Although they differ a bit with regard to meanings ascribed to certain terms or with regard to conclusions drawn from certain types of data, there is none theless considerable agreement, especially when one realizes that they represent three different continents and five different nationalities.
