Book excerpt: 'The Reimann School' is the first book on a remarkable educational establishment - a design school established in Germany in 1906, many years before the Bauhaus. Without pretensions or grandiose philosophies, it set out to train artists to apply themselves to useful arts that the market needed and that people would buy. It was one of the first schools to run classes in such subjects as photography, interior design and window display. On its relocation to London, in the 1930s, it attracted some of the glitterati of the world of patronage and design to its board and its teaching staff, and was to have several of its students, in their turn, influence design education and design practice. AUTHOR: Yasuko Suga teaches British history and design history at Tsuda College. She acts as the secretary of the Design History Workshop Japan and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Her PhD, completed at the Royal College of Art, explored the GPO's visual propaganda in the interwar period. She has published books and a variety of academic journals on aspects of British and Japanese design. SELLING POINTS: * A fascinating insight into the history of the extraordinary design school * An illustrated volume documenting the history of the first commercial art school in Britain 44 colour and 53 b/w illustrations

Book excerpt: "These innovative essays compel us to reevaluate our understanding of the Cold War as a predominantly political and military event. Their consideration of a broad range of cultural forms---from literature and film to glossy magazines and body-building---reminds us that the Cold War's influence on culture and its producers was as varied and complex as the Southeast Asian countries it touched. Lively and insightful, this rich collection is a valuable contribution to both Cold War studies and the modern histories of Southeast Asia."---Richard A. Ruth, Ph.D., Department of History, U.S. Naval Academy; and author of In Buddha's Company: Thai Soldiers in the Vietnam War --

Download or read book Art School written by Steven Henry Madoff and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-09-11 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading international artists and art educators consider the challenges of art education in today's dramatically changed art world. The last explosive change in art education came nearly a century ago, when the German Bauhaus was formed. Today, dramatic changes in the art world—its increasing professionalization, the pervasive power of the art market, and fundamental shifts in art-making itself in our post-Duchampian era—combined with a revolution in information technology, raise fundamental questions about the education of today's artists. Art School (Propositions for the 21st Century) brings together more than thirty leading international artists and art educators to reconsider the practices of art education in academic, practical, ethical, and philosophical terms. The essays in the book range over continents, histories, traditions, experiments, and fantasies of education. Accompanying the essays are conversations with such prominent artist/educators as John Baldessari, Michael Craig-Martin, Hans Haacke, and Marina Abramovic, as well as questionnaire responses from a dozen important artists—among them Mike Kelley, Ann Hamilton, Guillermo Kuitca, and Shirin Neshat—about their own experiences as students. A fascinating analysis of the architecture of major historical art schools throughout the world looks at the relationship of the principles of their designs to the principles of the pedagogy practiced within their halls. And throughout the volume, attention is paid to new initiatives and proposals about what an art school can and should be in the twenty-first century—and what it shouldn't be. No other book on the subject covers more of the questions concerning art education today or offers more insight into the pressures, challenges, risks, and opportunities for artists and art educators in the years ahead. Contributors Marina Abramovic, Dennis Adams, John Baldessari, Ute Meta Bauer, Daniel Birnbaum, Saskia Bos, Tania Bruguera, Luis Camnitzer, Michael Craig-Martin, Thierry de Duve, Clémentine Deliss, Charles Esche, Liam Gillick, Boris Groys, Hans Haacke, Ann Lauterbach, Ken Lum, Steven Henry Madoff, Brendan D. Book Visual Catalog Greg Lynn s Studio at the University of Applied Arts Vienna

Download or read book Visual Catalog Greg Lynn s Studio at the University of Applied Arts Vienna written by Kristy Balliet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-04-02 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kristy Balliet and Brennan Buck are architects and have both worked as assistants to Greg Lynn. This is their ‘visual catalog’ of the Lynn Studio’s work over the last five years. It is a project-based visual catalog of design innovations that were created with Lynn’s students. Each chapter describes an exactly defined formal, aesthetic or atmospheric building block and its cultural context. The descriptions comprise introductions, reference images, theoretical contributions and the student’s projects for the studio. The Visual Catalog offers a unique insight into Greg Lynn’s design and teaching practice. Since the 1990s, Lynn has been considered the pioneer of a new generation of architects whose primary tool are computers. Going against the trend towards reduced, minimalist renderings in current architecture publications, the Studio Lynn Visual Catalog is a high-gloss monograph overflowing with graphical material that can be understood as an inspiring manual for students and practicing architects.

Book Liberalism Nationalism and Design Reform in the Habsburg Empire

Download or read book Liberalism Nationalism and Design Reform in the Habsburg Empire written by Matthew Rampley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberalism, Nationalism and Design Reform in the Habsburg Empire is a study of museums of design and applied arts in Austria-Hungary from 1864 to 1914. The Museum for Art and Industry (now the Museum of Applied Arts) as well as its design school occupies a prominent place in the study. The book also gives equal attention to museums of design and applied arts in cities elsewhere in the Empire, such as Budapest Prague, Cracow, Brno and Zagreb. The book is shaped by two broad concerns: the role of liberalism as a political, cultural and economic ideology motivating the museums’ foundation, and their engagement with the politics of imperial, national and regional identity of the late Habsburg Empire. This book will be of interest for scholars of art history, museum studies, design history, and European history.
